Disaster holiday at resort

Happywifehappylife18 · 20/06/2025 15:35

Long story shortish,
me, my partner, son and MIL have paid a huge amount to stay in a resort this week. After the first night MIL had what we thought to be mosquito bites all over her arms and chest. They were blistering and weeping. Doctor gave her an injection antihistamine and directed us to stay in room for 72 hours. The very next morning MIL woke up with over 80 bites over her body, face, ears back and hands. Doctor confirmed it appeared to be bed bugs. Resort have moved MIL to another room however has now been told by doctor to avoid sunshine for another 72 hours. Meaning that 5 days of our holiday we have all been couped up in a room, and me and my partner have been taking turns in taking little one to the pool.

now we have found bites on our two year old. We’re not sure what to do. MIL is emotionally distressed and it’s so bad. The bites are so swollen and just everywhere, some have even popped so badly that her skin is raw.
am i being unreasonable to request a full refund from the resort as we have had a really horrifying experience

has anyone ever had this from a high end resort? .

I feel for you but Bahia are not high end, they specialise in sprawling mass produced all inclusive resorts that are about churning people through. Glad the staff there are being nice but you'll be best directing your complaint to the package provider you booked with, I'm assuming it was a package?

OP has said she booked directly with the hotel, I think…….,

scotstars · 20/06/2025 19:03

Sorry op it must be a miserable time bed bugs sound horrific. If you booked direct through the hotel you may get a refund - however I doubt you will all get a refund possibly just those with bites that you can evidence.
Were you all in 1 room? I'd try and make the most of it there's no guarantee you will get a refund if mil has had treatment insurers etc are fairly brutal they may say you chose to stay in..
Personally I would have asked the hotel or insurance to find alternative accommodation I wouldn't have carried on staying there

“Bed bugs don’t have teeth like we tend to think of them. Instead, they have structures in their mouths called stylets.
These stylets are thin, sharp, and designed to easily pierce the skin without people noticing. As the stylets enter the skin, the bed bugs inject an anesthetic that numbs the area so that you won’t wake up.

The insect also injects an anticoagulant, or blood thinner, as they feed. This makes it easier for them to eat, and it makes it even harder for you to notice strange sensations that would possibly wake you up.”

As I said - evil fuckers

🐜 🐜 🐜… I have literally zero interest in packing to go on first family holiday in 6 years next week! My DS18 just got back from travelling…. got them in a hell hole in Peru… I asked him what he did with his stuff…. He said apart from a T Shirt and swim shorts he was wearing, took everything he owned to laundrette, lovely Chinese guy who didn’t speak English or Spanish ( DS does), so he mimed out 💤 with his folded hands next to his head, then crawling insects till the guy nodded furiously! He’s no idea what the guy did to his clothes, but they came back high on chemicals, not a bug in sight! ( horrid rash from the chemicals took over, but he couldn’t have cared, less!)

Seriously, though, thank you for your explanation as to how the cheeky fuckers work their evil. 👿. There will be a special place in hell for the 🐜 buggers!

Also, now you’ve explained it, hopefully no more criticism of OP’s poor MIL for “ not noticing” her flesh being pierced over 80 times 😳🤞! I hope she gets better, soon.

PrincessofWells · 20/06/2025 19:06

Op when you return home you need to remove all your clothing bag it up and either bag and bin it or quarantine it for 18 months in plastic bags in the garage. Dont go in the house in clothes. Also bin your suitcases unless they are hard cases with no fabric lining.

They are very difficult to get rid of once you have them.

Happywifehappylife18 · 20/06/2025 19:06

Hardtum · 20/06/2025 18:29

Your mil “woke up” to 80 bites

you mean she didn’t notice during the night whilst she was being nibbled on?

Yeah! Sound asleep while being eaten alive

What have you done to address this OP?

Seriously? What is wrong with you?

Caroparo52 · 20/06/2025 17:35

I do sympathise op. Sounds totally horrendous.
But on a different note you want to make sure you don't bring the little bed bug bastards back to your house and infest that too.
They travel unseen in your luggage. I would personally buy new luggage and keep it as someone said in the bathtub not on the floor. Sounds like whole hotel could be infested.
You can claim for the new luggage on your insurance.
When you get home put the cases in bathtub too.
And wash everything on high or put in freezer for 48 hours when home.
Bedbugs are a nightmare to get rid of. A real nightmare.
I'm sorry you are experiencing this nightmare.

Most insurances exclude claims relating to bed bugs.

3luckystars · 20/06/2025 18:06

Do not bring them into your house!

DO NOT BRING THEM IN TO YOUR HOUSE.

Take off all your clothes outside and dump everything you can. Do not bring anything into the house after this holiday.

This! Otherwise may as well burn down the house after they return.

Hardtum · 20/06/2025 19:12

Happywifehappylife18 · 20/06/2025 19:06

Which Bahia is it? Do any of the TA reviews mention bedbugs?

Porkychops · 20/06/2025 19:14

Could she not sit in the shade while she is recovering?

Corgiears · 20/06/2025 19:14

Twitchitch · 20/06/2025 16:03

She woke up with 80 bites…. She she aware of being eaten alive overnight?!

Obviously not?

Corgiears · 20/06/2025 19:17

Apologies if somebody has said this already, but I think your bigger problem might actually be not taking this home with you. Your clothes, your suitcases etc will most likely be infested. I’m not telling you this to stress you out further but because you really don’t want this coming into your house, it’s an expensive pain in the arse to get rid of. And if it is the resort that is being mentioned here, it’s pretty clear they were aware of it in advance.

I would document all of it. Also, if you lift up the bed and look around the bottom of the mattress, you may see signs of them there. They can also be inside skirting boards, and that kind of thing. I would document every single part of this, and would consider not taking your suitcase and clothes into your house (and car), unfortunately. Obviously, there’s a cost associated with that too - I would want to be thinking about how they were going to cover that for you.

Nikki75 · 20/06/2025 19:29

This sounds awful completely ruined I'd be demanding a full refund.

Thanks to loads of DDT in the 50s and evolution, these beasts are now resistant to most poisons. But the council had a program of using different types. Don’t diy with sprays. Don’t do sniffer dogs either- we considered it! The cost of rentokil is extraordinary and they know you are desperate. Local councils have responsibility for pest control and were brilliant. A combo of steam cleaning, poisoning (council), sealing cracks in skirting boards, washing every item of clothing in the house at 60, and using a special earth that suffocates them all helped too. But it’s best to find their harbourage.

Their first harbourage was our wooden bedframe. Out it went with BEDBUGS written all over it ( embarrassing!) for the council to collect. But before they had the chance to come someone had nicked it! Omg!

I smiled, nodded and shuddered at your posts @Fleetbug

Nobody has an iota of an idea what trauma these little critters unleash, until they know 😭

My dd brought them home and due to her teenage habits and tastes (dark walls, bedding etc) it was a while before we understood what was going on. We initially put it down to Mosquitos as we live in southern europe, until she saw them crawling... The memory makes me feel queasy. I freaked out and threw bed and bedding out, before calling pest control. Fortunately due to not having carpets or curtains it was dealt with very quickly. The professionals had us leave and fumigated whole apartment. They told me all evidence seemed contained to dd's room. Having got a front row seat to what having these little effers mean, I am now obsessed with checking wherever I am. I once saw a video on YouTube someone had taken on a New York metro, with seats infested and the damn things visibly crawling everywhere.

OP, you really should push for a full refund and compensation. It is disgraceful that there are so many reports from this hotel, so many holidays ruined, yet they have not shut down and fumigated the whole resort. Definitely stand your ground! Additionally, be really careful returning home. It only take one of these bastards to enter your home and wreak havoc on your purse and mental health.

LoveFreshSheets · 20/06/2025 19:31

This is horrific
particularly as it was a known issue.
Ask the manager for the “Hoja de reclamacíon” (the complaints book) and show him the news report on the thread. It is a legal requirement that they have the HDR and they are obliged to provide it when asked.
This has to be filled out and then sent or taken to the local consumer office/ ajuntament (town hall) . Also ask for an internal complaint form, fill it out and attach a copy of the official complaint form.
If they refuse, advise them you are going to the police to file a “denuncia”
Have copies of everything and attach them with photos to any claims for a refund.
You may be able to hire a local Gestor to help you for a small fee.
Your poor MIL 🥺 I hope you get a positive resolution

Yeah! Sound asleep while being eaten alive

When we went to the gulf coast of Florida I was eaten alive by a mosquito or two and didn’t wake. I had over 100 large red bites. It looked like I had chicken pox. You don’t always feel it at the time, especially if asleep.

I know!!

And be advised, they can also get through walls of neighbours property. God help you if they get inside your door.

CustardySergeant · 20/06/2025 16:47

A year to get rid of them? That's horrific!

But if you can’t take anything from the holiday indoors, how do you get in? What happens to the clothes you are wearing when you get back to your house at the end of the holiday? You can hardly take them off in the street!

Ilikeadrink14 · 20/06/2025 19:39

PrincessofWells · 20/06/2025 19:06

‘Don’t go into the house in clothes’!
Are you suggesting they go in naked? They‘d have to completely strip off in the street outside their house! That’ll give the neighbours something to think about!

3luckystars · 20/06/2025 19:42

Well I’d rather that then allow them bastards in my house. If I was your neighbour I would be grateful to you.

Theguiltygoose · 20/06/2025 19:44

SixteentoOne · 20/06/2025 18:31

@Fleetbug— is there any danger of traveling with bed bugs on clothing and these infecting the plane?

I'm assuming not if people are allowed to fly home. 🤔

The pest control company I used said they should actually be called travelling bugs because they absolutely do end up on planes and most modes of transport - before hitching a ride on their new host 😖 They said never ever put cases on beds or floors (particularly if carpeted) instead stand it in bath or shower.

I am diligent now because once you experience bed bugs in your home, you go down a rabbit hole reading about the evil bleeders, and never ever ever want to experience it again.

Knowing what to look for in hotels etc is imperative. Op's thread has probably made a few Mnetters more aware before they travel this summer.

LaughingCat · 20/06/2025 19:45

Definitely ask for a full refund and if not forthcoming, I’d get in on that lawsuit, personally. They’ve had infestations since 2023 - that’s awful! So sorry your holiday has been ruined and I hope you MIL and little one start to heal up soon.

For gods sake don’t take your suitcases indoors when you get home. They can get inside your luggage and into your own house.

WaltzingWaters · 20/06/2025 19:56

cheapshoes · 20/06/2025 18:36

Oh hell my daughter and her friends are headed to this hotel tomorrow. I really hope they're ok - its their first holiday as 18 year olds.

Oh gosh. I know it’s a bit late but I’d be getting them to contact their tour operators to complain there are active extreme cases of bed bugs and they want to change hotels.

If they don’t change hotels, even if they don’t seem to have any issues, take precautions with her luggage when she returns. I once stayed in a hostel, my friend and I in different rooms. She got bed bugs on holiday, I didn’t. I woke up the following day at home with bed bug bites that had got into my luggage. Thankfully a very thorough clean straight away seemed to do the trick, but it could have been very different.
