Disaster holiday at resort

Happywifehappylife18 · 20/06/2025 15:35

Long story shortish,
me, my partner, son and MIL have paid a huge amount to stay in a resort this week. After the first night MIL had what we thought to be mosquito bites all over her arms and chest. They were blistering and weeping. Doctor gave her an injection antihistamine and directed us to stay in room for 72 hours. The very next morning MIL woke up with over 80 bites over her body, face, ears back and hands. Doctor confirmed it appeared to be bed bugs. Resort have moved MIL to another room however has now been told by doctor to avoid sunshine for another 72 hours. Meaning that 5 days of our holiday we have all been couped up in a room, and me and my partner have been taking turns in taking little one to the pool.

now we have found bites on our two year old. We’re not sure what to do. MIL is emotionally distressed and it’s so bad. The bites are so swollen and just everywhere, some have even popped so badly that her skin is raw.
am i being unreasonable to request a full refund from the resort as we have had a really horrifying experience

has anyone ever had this from a high end resort? .

This! Otherwise may as well burn down the house after they return.

Exactly this. I have just told DP that we will be stripping down at our appartment door and dashing everything.

Sounds awful OP. I know someone who brought bed bugs home from Tenerife. A different hotel though. I don’t think it’s that uncommon.

Blueblell · 20/06/2025 20:14

How awful! I see you have been moved to different rooms. I was going to say staying in the room would surely cause more bites if it is bed bugs

Happywifehappylife18 · 20/06/2025 20:15

Caroparo52 · 20/06/2025 17:35

I do sympathise op. Sounds totally horrendous.
But on a different note you want to make sure you don't bring the little bed bug bastards back to your house and infest that too.
They travel unseen in your luggage. I would personally buy new luggage and keep it as someone said in the bathtub not on the floor. Sounds like whole hotel could be infested.
You can claim for the new luggage on your insurance.
When you get home put the cases in bathtub too.
And wash everything on high or put in freezer for 48 hours when home.
Bedbugs are a nightmare to get rid of. A real nightmare.
I'm sorry you are experiencing this nightmare.

Well we overheard someone talking about bites just now and it seems the hotel sprayed their room and they are still sleeping in that room. I made sure I went out of our way to let them know that it could be the bed bugs.

saltinesandcoffeecups · 20/06/2025 20:17

All this room moving is just rehoming the bed bugs and spreading them around. Ughh.

‘’If it were me and I wasn’t getting anywhere with a refund I’d make sure the discussion about it was held in a very public place and would not be quiet about it.

Porkychops · 20/06/2025 19:14

Could she not sit in the shade while she is recovering?

If I was the MIL in this situation I'd be absolutely insisting that everyone else get out and get on with enjoying their day, not cooped up inside for my benefit.

And remember this includes your luggage, too. A lot of people make the mistake of unpacking their suitcases on the bed, which contaminates it! I'd probably leave suitcases at the door, unpack clothes straight into the washing machine and then bin the suitcases (unless they're hard plastic and therefore can be washed/soft and easily chucked into a washing machine). I'd also wash your shoes and all other belongings if possible.

Sorry you're dealing with this, it sounds horrific.

Patricia1704 · 20/06/2025 20:19

I think you might not get a refund but you could push for a free holiday (though you would have to pay for flights and they may put restrictions in on what dates you can visit.)

UndermyShoeJoe · 20/06/2025 20:22

Eugh that’s terrible. Also feel for sorry but anyone on the flight home with you who may end up with bedbugs from this hotel via you and to be fair I guess passengers on flights after.

Hope you are getting home at silly o clock to run in butt naked.

Plantladylover · 20/06/2025 20:25

Makes no sense for you all to stay in room for 72 hours cos 1 person was ill. bit silly. Tenerife is hardly the tropics. Which hotel are you in? did you book directly or on a package tour?

Shoemadlady · 20/06/2025 20:29

Take as many photos as you can for proof, every single day to show how the bites are changing, this is awful I’m so sorry

Happywifehappylife18 · 20/06/2025 19:56

Exactly this. I have just told DP that we will be stripping down at our appartment door and dashing everything.

this risks having them in the car or the apartment building if they travel on your suitcases so would defeat the point of stripping off!

Put everything that has been in the room in thick bin bags, tightly seal.

Get new suitcases that do not go in the room, hot wash AND tumble dry all clothes before they go in the new suitcases. Anything that cannot be tumbled, dry outside and put in new bin bags - double or triple bagged. Then don’t open those for at least a month so any bugs or eggs that have survived the wash will be dead.

That will hopefully keep you from bringing them home with you 🤞 my family got bed bugs from a one night stay in the UK and it was a nightmare to get rid of them at home.

Timeforsnacks · 20/06/2025 20:37

I know you said the cortisol cream they gave means MIL can't go in the sun after but perhaps the hotel may have also encouraging her to stay in the room so others don't see her??
If I were her I would be tempted to show off as many bites as possible and stand in the entrance of the hotel asking for a refund while everyone else could overhear... If they don't refund her then and there they never will

scotchbonnetface · 20/06/2025 20:44

This thread is freaking me out!! Where do they come from??

Corgiears · 20/06/2025 20:48

Ilikeadrink14 · 20/06/2025 19:39

‘Don’t go into the house in clothes’!
Are you suggesting they go in naked? They‘d have to completely strip off in the street outside their house! That’ll give the neighbours something to think about!

Buy a spare set, go in via the back door, something… or do it the second you get in and throw the old ones out the door to be disposed of.

She has tried to tell
us to go. But she is elderly and has had such a severe reaction me and dp want to keep an eye on her to make sure she is ok.

I’m on page 6 of your post and I haven’t seen anyone mention it yet so just wanted to add that by Spanish law all restaurants and hotels etc have to have a complaints book on site and they absolutely must hand it over to you at your request to fill in. It probably won’t do you any good in terms of compensation or anything but they are inspected by their council annually (as far as I know) so would be good to have it officially documented for them to see so hopefully they can act on it if the hotel themselves don’t seem to be doing anything about the problem. I would presume that the more people that mention something like this the more likely it is that the council would be forced to do something

Wiltingasparagusfern · 20/06/2025 21:13

I mean if I were you I’d have gone fucking nuts. I’d have also have checked out on the first night and phoned the insurance company straight away? Why are you still in the hotel? Get the hell out! You say your two year old has bites? And you are asking if you’re unreasonable to ask for a refund? And your mother in law is severely ill? And it’s a hotel with a reputation for bedbug infestation? Grow a pair and get all your money back!!!

‘Bit silly’ that you haven't read the thread too!

Hotel name has been mentioned loads as has the fact that it was booked direct…but then it would have been mentioned 7 pages in!

oh do pipe down. It's not uncommon to reply to a thread without first reading the first 8 pages.

Ibelievetheworldisburningtotheground · 20/06/2025 21:20

Your entire stay should be refunded. And any resulting medical costs. How awful!

ViciousCurrentBun · 20/06/2025 21:30

Get a friend to set something up outside your home so you can strip off, look at proper advice online on what to do with luggage.

You can just read the OP's posts. That is pretty much expected if you're going to post, otherwise you're contributing on partial info.

Quite luckily we live in a flat with our own floor. So no one will see us in the nude! But if that wernt the case I couldn’t care less who can see. I ain’t bringing these into my home.
