Disaster holiday at resort

Happywifehappylife18 · 20/06/2025 15:35

Long story shortish,
me, my partner, son and MIL have paid a huge amount to stay in a resort this week. After the first night MIL had what we thought to be mosquito bites all over her arms and chest. They were blistering and weeping. Doctor gave her an injection antihistamine and directed us to stay in room for 72 hours. The very next morning MIL woke up with over 80 bites over her body, face, ears back and hands. Doctor confirmed it appeared to be bed bugs. Resort have moved MIL to another room however has now been told by doctor to avoid sunshine for another 72 hours. Meaning that 5 days of our holiday we have all been couped up in a room, and me and my partner have been taking turns in taking little one to the pool.

now we have found bites on our two year old. We’re not sure what to do. MIL is emotionally distressed and it’s so bad. The bites are so swollen and just everywhere, some have even popped so badly that her skin is raw.
am i being unreasonable to request a full refund from the resort as we have had a really horrifying experience

has anyone ever had this from a high end resort? .

Get photos of the bites. Email the hotel so there’s evidence of all the dates.

Sounds absolutely bloody awful.

Have you insurance as a first port of call?

Yes we have insurance, I’ll have a look through the policy to see if this is covered. Thank you!

Where on earth are you???

Twitchitch · 20/06/2025 15:39

Picture?

LIZS · 20/06/2025 15:40

Why did you all have to stay in for 72 hours?

We are in tenerefe, we stayed at this resort last year. In fact my partner proposed to me here exactly 1 year ago. So we came back to celebrate. Last year was amazing. This year has been an absolute shit show. The staff have been really good and brought us pitchers of cocktails and room service. But really we came to do activities and have family
memories. Unfortunately for MIL will
Probably have the scars to remember for rest of her life.
ATM we are trying to make the best of a bad situation and enjoy ourselves.

Presume you have told the hotel / resort? They should be bending over backwards to help you and make your stay better and profusely apologetic. I got bed bugs in the UK from staying in a posh hotel for one night -- they come up a few nights later. You need to keep all your luggage in the bath to make sure the bed bugs don't get in to your clothing and you bring them home. I'm so sorry you are having such a shit time.

BrentfordForever · 20/06/2025 15:43

of course full refund, as someone said above email them asap and take picture while you’re in the room for evidence

surely though a hydrocortisone is better? I’d go back to doctor asap

is that a chain or a local one ? This is scary

Twitchitch · 20/06/2025 15:44

What have you done to address this OP?

Twitchitch · 20/06/2025 15:44

It looks like you have started a mumsnet thread before actually talking to the hotel

wordywitch · 20/06/2025 15:46

It must be steroids she was given if she needs to stay out of the sun for 72 hours afterwards.

Sidebeforeself · 20/06/2025 15:46

Contact your travel company/agent/rep NOW . Take photos and keep notes of everything. Did you get a written note from the dr .. if not can you get one. This won’t get resolved now, but the more you do in real time the less wriggle room the company will have. I very much doubt you’ll get a full refund though

Uh? She’s asking for advice on next steps?

sofski91 · 20/06/2025 15:48

Full refund. Did you book a package? Eg. Tui, jet2 etc? If so, get the rep involved. And push for a full refund + compensation. They need to be paying for medical costs + any potential loss of earnings. I’d also complain to the local tourist board (did this once in France and we noted the following year the accommodation had been downgraded from 3 star to 2 star so it does have an impact).

BrentfordForever · 20/06/2025 15:48

Of course they’re giving you cocktails cause they re trying the “smooch over” technique!

my message would be clear OP, complains, courts etc

thats is absolutely disgusting to have to go through these crap

Well we have spoken to the hotel because they have moved our rooms. We spoke with the manager today who is doing their best to make us y while we are in the room. I made this thread to find out if I am being unreasonable or not to ask for a full refund.

Bahia? Barcelo?

I think I mentioned in the post that me and my partner have been taking turns to take toddler out. But MIL is in a lot of pain and we felt bad to leave her behind while she is so poorly, she has had an allergic reaction to the bites.

I wouldn’t just “speak” to them OP

if you don’t make your point across quite “aggressively” wrt impact on your family health… they ll use this against you when you go through the complaint process

The staff here are actually really nice and we can’t fault them for that.
