Disaster holiday at resort

Happywifehappylife18 · 20/06/2025 15:35

Long story shortish,
me, my partner, son and MIL have paid a huge amount to stay in a resort this week. After the first night MIL had what we thought to be mosquito bites all over her arms and chest. They were blistering and weeping. Doctor gave her an injection antihistamine and directed us to stay in room for 72 hours. The very next morning MIL woke up with over 80 bites over her body, face, ears back and hands. Doctor confirmed it appeared to be bed bugs. Resort have moved MIL to another room however has now been told by doctor to avoid sunshine for another 72 hours. Meaning that 5 days of our holiday we have all been couped up in a room, and me and my partner have been taking turns in taking little one to the pool.

now we have found bites on our two year old. We’re not sure what to do. MIL is emotionally distressed and it’s so bad. The bites are so swollen and just everywhere, some have even popped so badly that her skin is raw.
am i being unreasonable to request a full refund from the resort as we have had a really horrifying experience

has anyone ever had this from a high end resort? .

Why are you in the room? Staying out of the sun doesn’t mean sitting in room.

Keep anti histamine use age up l, speak to insurance company. Ask hotel for details of their liability insurance. Did the room change mean that you got an upgrade?

Are there bites between fingers? Could it be scabies?

loveev · 20/06/2025 15:55

The hotel my friend told me about is the Bitcora . I know they had problems with bed bugs

What have you done to address this OP?

Well first we got the room changed, we have washed all
of our clothes on 100 degree wash in the laundrette. We today had a meeting with the manager but honestly the meeting was more about what they can do for us now in the moment to make MIL more comfortable. But it just feels like a washed week sitting on a balcony.

I suspect this hotel does begin with B and is in playa las Americas. If I am thinking of the same one they have had beg big issues since February, as I was planning on going back in feb but ended up changing my plans to another resort due to seeing bed bug posts all over social media, and people with very bad bites. I was gutted as its a fabulous hotel otherwise

I do hope you manage to enjoy your holiday OP

Just re read your post. Get antihistamine tablets for all of you. Loratadine or similar, not the herbal ones they sell in Spain.

why did the Dr banish you to the room? Has the hotel offered to launder your clothes?

NoMoreCoffeePlease · 20/06/2025 15:57

If this is Bahia Principe, they have some right risk to their reputation (and rightly so!) and should be bending over backwards to compensate you.

No upgrade same style room as we had already got the best room available. No bites between fingers. I will post a photo later but you can see the track marks that it’s defo bed bugs.

Dr gave MIL really strong antihistamine and cortisoid cream that can’t be in any sunlight. Me and partner have been taking in turns to look after MIL

The staff here are actually really nice and we can’t fault them for that.

But the hotel has been negligent.

All hotels know that they need to monitor all their rooms for bedbugs.

You need to ensure that you don;t take then home with you or it will cost you thousands to get rid of them. Google what you need to do.

Not only should you get a full refund but your mum deserves thousands in compensation.

Bed bugs can be anywhere, they don't care about the star ratings of hotels.

Twitchitch · 20/06/2025 16:03

She woke up with 80 bites…. She she aware of being eaten alive overnight?!

Muchtoomuchtodo · 20/06/2025 16:08

They could be on / in your luggage as well as your clothing. Moving rooms could well have moved them with you.

Did you book directly with the hotel, with a company or through a travel agent? That will help figure out who is responsible for compensating you. If you’re booked with Tui / Jet2 etc the reps should be helping you too.

You need lots of evidence of what’s happened, who’s done and said what, when etc. Keep a record of names, dates and times. Plying you with drinks is trying to keep you sweet. Don’t fall for it.

tammienorrie · 20/06/2025 16:12

Did you travel on a package with Jet 2, Tui or similar? If so, get in touch with their rep. Usually there's a whatsapp or similar.

maddiemookins16mum · 20/06/2025 16:13

Ex Travel company Customer Services here, did you book a package? This is key to how you pursue this.

Exactly - if it's a package you pursue with Jet2/Tui/whoever, if you've booked flights and accommodation separately you have to deal with the hotel.

nomas · 20/06/2025 16:20

This is my worst nightmare.

Find your anger OP and channel in to getting a full refund.

Puzzledandpissedoff · 20/06/2025 16:21

I'm very sorry about the dreadful time you're having, OP, but the trouble is that dealing with this properly will involve closing rooms while the problem's addressed, and they'll resist that as hard as they can

Regardless of how the actual holiday was booked I agree with Sunholidays about reporting this to the local authorities in the hope that the hotel will be forced into the necessary action

Yes this is where we are. I’m fuming reading this! They should have fumigated the whole building a long time ago.
