Whatever your stance is on trans issues do people really have nothing better to do than verbally slaughter him for choosing to continue within the franchise and being honest that he has no strong opinions on the matter? He's a big boy now and I'm sure he can handle himself but it makes me terrified for the young actors who are also already being subjected to this as well.

I myself was also pretty much forced to remove a post on a facebook group congratulating one of the young actors on being cast in the TV series as some of the vitriol I received completely overpowered the positive intention of the post. I said nothing inflammatory just pointed out that not everyone disagrees with JK's opinions and that we need to be accepting of opinions which are different to our own.

I'd understand the backlash if JK or so called TERFS were spreading genuine hate or encouraging persecution of a group but I just don't see that. IMO whatever your views on gender identity are there's way more horrible and important things going on in the world. Is a lot of trans-activisim really just a way for young people to express their very valid dissatisfaction with the world in general in a reasonably safe way? Honestly maybe I'm getting old and boring but I just don't get it.

Jk is just defending womens rights at the end of the day. This whole trans thing is getting ridiculous.

Bullying into submission. They're sending a message - keep quiet or we'll come for you too.

Hoardasurass · 10/06/2025 10:40

According to the TRAs (who are going after him) anything other than complete subservience to trans ideology, including hating on anyone they say is bad, is transphobic, hate speach and/or literal violence™️. So yes this is the world we now live in, your either with them or against them and even thinking that women have rights let alone separate from men makes you an evil genocidal TERF.

Sorry what is your "AIBU" question @User012389 ?

I guess AIBU to think this is all ridiculous and and oppressing people's rights to have an opinion (or in TF's case not have an opinion) about something

I think it’s far better for everyone when actors don’t share their political beliefs.

ChunkingDreamer · 10/06/2025 10:51

It's absolutely ridiculous. These are the people who will defend rapists and paedophiles if they happen to be trans, but a man who appears in play written by someone who they don't agree with is beyond the pale?

DancingDangerously · 10/06/2025 10:52

It's so tolerant isn't it, this new cult of tolerance.

I'd agree but trans rights or lack of them shouldn't be considered politics. Besides if one side is shouting loudly can the other side not shout back?? No wonder the world is the way it is If everyone wants to live in an echo chamber.

Exactly this. Pour encourager les autres.

Helleofabore · 10/06/2025 10:54

The reaction has been rather enlightening. It isn't like he has not said this before either, so it is not new.

It’s really quite clear in her post 🙄

TheNightingalesStarling · 10/06/2025 10:58

HBO would not be making the new series, the Cursed Child wouldn't be in theatres worldwide, Lgo wouldn't make the sets, there wouldn't be theme parks etc if Harry Potter wasn't popular.

Social Media TRAs are just bullies acting like toddlers because only a minority actually agree with them

Oooh I wasn't aware Mumsnet had "thread police" now.

How do I get such a prestigious role please? Do you need any qualifications?

Yes, I actually had to leave Twitter a while ago because they harassed me because I refused to call my rapist a woman (he's very much not). Lovely people.

You should see what they are doing to bunny rescues. These clowns are taking a long time burning themselves out. But they will

But Tom Felton hasn't shared his political beliefs. He's famously shtum on them. He's getting shit for signing up to be a part of the Harry Potter franchise again.

Genevieva · 10/06/2025 11:07

He’s been careful not to jump on any political bandwagons and I’m pretty sure he won’t rise to this attack, so it will die down soon enough. A few years ago he was asked directly and he responded brilliantly with a quip along the lines of ‘God knows I’m not Mr Public Affairs’. In other words: I’m an actor, I’m glad for the acting opportunities I’ve had and I’m not going to be drawn into controversy. Good for him.

Verv · 10/06/2025 11:11

Aye, they're a septic and deranged little bunch, bless em.

User012389 · 10/06/2025 11:11

Personally I just want my own daughter to be allowed the protection of using toilets and changing rooms which are for her biologically assigned sex only. I want her to be able to say with confidence 'I don't give a fuck what you identify as, what your interests are or how you dress. I will be kind and respectful to you if you are kind and respectful to me' I want her to be able to express her opinions about sex and gender without being punished by the school (actually happened to my niece because she accidentally called a school friend she instead of they) I don't think this is much to ask for really

GingerBeverage · 10/06/2025 11:14

Reckon his theatre run will sell out. Wouldn't be surprised if he nabs a guest role in the TV show later on.

SidewaysOtter · 10/06/2025 11:15

It's the whole "purity of thought" thing. There are a set of "correct" views according to a sub-section of the left (I say this as someone who is fairly lefty) and woe betide anyone who has a different opinion or has any sense of nuance.

As @bellinisurge, last week it was a bunny sanctuary they went after (sanctuary had a policy of following back anyone who followed them on TwiX, one such account was unsavoury but the TRAs tried to make the sanctuary state that they held certain views. When they refused the mob went after them). Like all those of a dictatorial mindset, they are as unpleasant as they are intolerant. Which is ironic as the people involved in these pile-ons would pride themselves on their tolerance, inclusivity and progressiveness Hmm

I love the sentiment but can I just say it's biologically observed sex not assigned. Assigned sex is part of the imaginary genderwoo.

I was going to say this! The bunny rescue is doing a marvellous job of saying no actually we don't have to post what you think we should.

John Lithgow also spoke about how he got stick for saying yes to Dumbledore.
