Tom Felton getting stick. Is this really the world we live in now?

Whatever your stance is on trans issues do people really have nothing better to do than verbally slaughter him for choosing to continue within the franchise and being honest that he has no strong opinions on the matter? He's a big boy now and I'm sure he can handle himself but it makes me terrified for the young actors who are also already being subjected to this as well.

I myself was also pretty much forced to remove a post on a facebook group congratulating one of the young actors on being cast in the TV series as some of the vitriol I received completely overpowered the positive intention of the post. I said nothing inflammatory just pointed out that not everyone disagrees with JK's opinions and that we need to be accepting of opinions which are different to our own.

I'd understand the backlash if JK or so called TERFS were spreading genuine hate or encouraging persecution of a group but I just don't see that. IMO whatever your views on gender identity are there's way more horrible and important things going on in the world. Is a lot of trans-activisim really just a way for young people to express their very valid dissatisfaction with the world in general in a reasonably safe way? Honestly maybe I'm getting old and boring but I just don't get it.

I think it’s far better for everyone when actors don’t share their political beliefs.

He hasn't shared his political beliefs.

He's just dared to say he's grateful for JKR for writing the books, and then the movies from her books giving him work and this life he's also grateful for.

SteakBakesAndHotTakes · 10/06/2025 11:36

It's really ridiculous. One of mine is reading the series now and I've had a few shifty responses - everyone is all good with any number of problematic male artists and writers, but JKR is vilified for standing up for women's rights.

Reminds me, John Lithgow is the lead in the new play about Roald Dahl, 'Giant' - a very problematic character. JKR has done NOTHING but support women - that's obviously worse than being a nasty anti-Semite.

honestly I just think if all these people put their efforts and energies into overcoming stereotypes, the whole thing goes away.

My daughter loves football, wrestling and dinosaurs. When she was 2 she was obsessed with Fireman Sam and trains. She's not comfortable wearing skirts or dresses, but she also loves playing with hair and barbies - we've never limited anything. She's not a boy. Never ever thought she was a boy or anything, but I do worry that someone with nefarious intent could try to say that because she likes "boy" things (and I mean that in the most stereotypical sense possible) that she is a boy.

If a boy likes pink and is comfortable in dresses or wants to play with dolls - go right ahead! But it doesn't mean your a girl - if we can break down those gender stereotypes I genuinely think people would be much happier.

Indeed. In a lot of the documentries I've seen they almost always start with an overbaring mum stating 'I just knew my little boy was a girl because he'd head straight for the pink feather boas and dresses in nursery blah blah blah' No wonder kids are so utterly confused about gender and sexual identity when grown adults cheapen womanhood to what a 2 year old chooses to play with...

I think the world would benefit from everyone sharing their opinions a bit less to be honest. On here, knock yourself out if you’re asked for your thoughts, but honestly I fail to see why we all have to share our opinions and thoughts on everything all the bloody time these days.

Tom Felton clearly doesn’t want to get involved. He shouldn’t have to. He should be able to keep out of it without being badgered or being attacked or ‘cancelled’ by anyone on either side. I’m getting so sick of it. They want to ruin him but let paedos like certain rock stars just continue with their lives? I am not going to share my personal opinion on trans rights here, but whether he does or doesn’t support trans people shouldn’t lead to this sort of response from anyone on either side.

He pretty much didn;t and still got stick.

And, the fact you believe that does not take away his rights - as a human being who happens to act - to have opinions and beliefs and share them.

They've played a blinder - "We're just here for the rabbits" and repeat on a loop to the nutters.

Even better, they've ended up with more followers and a hell of a lot of donations out of it so the Barbara Streisand Effect is still in full effect!

I've followed the bunny rescue for ages and I can't believe the abuse they're getting. The pile on got even worse when James Dreyfus stood up for the bunnies. Today the rescue has been accused of 'playing the victim'

This 100%. Ironically the “progressive”TRAs are actually enforcing outdated gender stereotypes of what girls and boys are “supposed” to look/be like 🙄

Some actors have made a genuine difference. But too often it's just virtue signalling.. Anyway poor Tom said nothing, just acting was enough!

"'I don't give a fuck what you identify as, what your interests are or how you dress. I will be kind and respectful to you if you are kind and respectful to me'"

Totally agree OP 😊

No, people aren’t entitled to harass others for not believing in, or aligning with, their own fantasy.

Yes, it’s quite telling how little condemnation there is for Gaiman in those circles. Everyone’s pretending not to talk about him or avoiding the subject of him very nicely indeed, and there certainly isn’t any of this incessant frothing rhetoric about how dreadful he is, like there is about Rowling just for stating a commonsense, middle ground opinion!

Yes, I am pn the subreddit to expose him, and everyone there wants to punish him legally. But most have friends who just can't bear to bring it up, but vigorously criticise JKR

It's entirely regressive, and incredibly damaging.

On this topic in particular JK's stance actually protects boys and young men too, and rightly so. Both sexes need protection from this warped ideology.

lunaswand · 10/06/2025 12:29

I love Tom Felton, he has famously always been a big Harry Potter fan & still is to this day. It's quite well known that when HP fans are asked when they will stop loving HP they reply with when Tom Felton does.

Good on him for doing it & for his honest answer. My only disappointment is I have tickets for next weekend & won't see him

soupycustard · 10/06/2025 12:30

It's ridiculous. But the men's rights movement is desperate and the men and handmaidens behind it very powerful.
Powerful enough that they've made many people who are allegedly intelligent, kind and thoughtful believe that males should use female sex-based rights to gain even more power than males as a sex class already have.
Powerful enough that swathes of people are demanding rights for males that would mean that rape victims couldn't have single sex support, that females would have to accept males in changing rooms, that rapists should be imprisoned in female prisons; that males should be allowed female prizes, spaces, places in boardrooms.
It's a male rights movement supported by the rich and powerful, and those rich powerful people pretending that theyre progressive are fighting a very clever fight.

Merrymouse · 10/06/2025 12:36

I think it's amplified because it's a global franchise and the situation in the UK and the US isn't the same.

In the US Trump really is trying to discriminate against trans people, e.g. saying they shouldn't have certain jobs because they are untrustworthy, and the left have chosen not to defend women's rights.

Therefore, when a neutral agency produces a report that raises concerns about gender affirming medicine, it just gets thrown into the political storm.

In the UK, the people defending women's rights, including JKR are left wing feminists, and the Cass report had cross party support. However, I don't think many Americans appreciate that.

Agree and I have noticed that people who disagree in any way are labelled “far right”.

I remember him from 'Third Rock from the Sun' - which might age me (it does) except I watched it when it was 'vintage'.

Ha, that's nothing...I've been a fan since The World According to Garp, in which he played Roberta Muldoon....here he is....😀

Indeed. He played a transwoman ie a man. Loved him in that.

It is absolutely the modern McCarthy communism trials. Completely bonkers and just shows no one learns from history

MassiveWordSalad · 10/06/2025 13:09

Well Jason Isaacs has booked tickets to go and see his “son” so he’s clearly a bigot too 😁

I think Tom Felton’s responses are a good way to deal with this nonsense, just pointing out how great JKR and sidestepping the rest. The best way to deal with tantrums is to ignore them.

That’s what’s happened here though. He was asked about JKR and her views, the controversy etc, and he basically said “I don’t really know much about it, I just know people love Harry Potter”.

Thats all he’s getting criticism for.
