Finding smoking a really sad thing to do?

Unreasonable or not? I don't get it, and I feel sorry for people outside getting a fix in the rain, it just looks a bit sad really.

And?

Straightjacketsandroses · 07/06/2025 17:57

Smoking is fantastic. I have never looked cooler than when I smoked, and it’s an amazing way to stay skinny. I regularly wish I didn’t care about my health so that I could take it back up. Nothing beats a strong, black coffee and a cigarette for breakfast somewhere beautiful like a terrace in Nice

MrsTerryPratchett · 07/06/2025 17:58

So don’t do it.

I was ice cold when I smoked. I’m quite sad and uncool now.

LivingDeadGirlUK · 07/06/2025 17:58

If I had a strong black coffee and a cigarette for breakfast I would be in the loo all morning. Is that why it keeps you skinny?

I actually took up smoking in the south of France - outside a small cafe in St Paul de Vence - aged 19 - the fag and coffee diet - those were the days! Ditched fags years ago along with my care free youth

gingercat02 · 07/06/2025 18:01

God I loved smoking. If it wouldn't kill me I would start again immediately

murasaki · 07/06/2025 18:01

We can all name things we think are sad that other people do, most of us just think it and don't verbalise it.

I bet you do several of the ones I'm thinking of OP.

CrownPointSouth · 07/06/2025 18:01

We don't care what you think OP we are too busy trying not to get wet getting our fix

AmazingBouncingFerret · 07/06/2025 18:02

I miss the need of having to take myself off outside to sit by myself and smoke a cigarette, away from everyone. Nobody talking at me. Just sitting and smoking.

I don’t miss cigarettes though!

DissDissOrDiss · 07/06/2025 18:02

@Straightjacketsandroses hard agree.

I gave up nearly 8 years ago but if if didn’t kill you, make you stink and give you wrinkles, I’d still be puffing away on a lovely lovely fag.

Glass of booze and a fag? ✔️
Coffee and a fag? ✔️
Food followed by a fag? ✔️
Gossip and a fag? ✔️
Shag followed by a fag? ✔️

Such a shame they are evil and stink.

MNdrama · 07/06/2025 18:02

Of course you're being unreasonable. Doesn't affect you, so why judge people? I'm sure there's probably plenty of things you do that people think are tragic

anonymous98 · 07/06/2025 18:02

I've never smoked but I take the view that it's none of my business.

NaeRolls · 07/06/2025 18:03

Yes, addiction is sad. I was a smoker for years. You become a slave to the substance; it becomes your number one priority. The addiction cuts a neurological pathway that overrides your normal survival and reward systems. You are a slave and have little to no free will. You hate yourself but you can't stop. Luckily it is possible to quit, but the person has to be ready.

BangersAndGnash · 07/06/2025 18:04

Up to the individual.

Can’t say I have ever wanted to breathe deliberately polluted air and pay the government a massive amount of money for the privilege.

THisbackwithavengeance · 07/06/2025 18:05

Smoking is way cooler than vaping.

L00pyLou · 07/06/2025 18:07

As someone who has never smoked, what's so enjoyable about it?

Same. I haven't smoked for over thirty years, and I only smoked ten or fifteen a day, but I still miss my first morning ciggie and coffee. I smoked Consulate, the menthol ones, or Berkeley Menthol if I couldn't get Consulate. As a teenager, I used to bond with my Nan over Consulate ciggies, cups of tea and Jimmy Cagney films on the telly. 😅

It looks cool and feels amazing

ShaunaSadeki · 07/06/2025 18:12

I love smoking and regularly miss it. If I had one wish I would hopefully/probably end up banishing hunger from the earth, but it would be a wrench to not make smoking not kill me instead.

I hate smoking, but this post kind of sold it to me. I’m in.

Berlinlover · 07/06/2025 18:14

I agree with you OP. I don’t understand the hype around alcohol either.

EineReiseDurchDieZeit · 07/06/2025 18:15

God like several others above I also miss smoking. Quit for reasons stated

Meadowfinch · 07/06/2025 18:15

I'm with you OP. I've just lost my longest standing friend to lung cancer. He should have been here for decades more.

I miss him more than I can say. I'd happily strangle the board of B.A.T at the moment. 🙁

Same! God, I loved Berkeley menthols! I haven’t smoked in years, but if I make it to 75, I’m going to start smoking again on my birthday. Make those last few years really count.
