Finding smoking a really sad thing to do?

Unreasonable or not? I don't get it, and I feel sorry for people outside getting a fix in the rain, it just looks a bit sad really.

This is exactly how I feel

Fucking same.

Yeah I agree. I used to smoke (when you could smoke indoors - I smoked from my late teens to mid 20s, (so about 7-8 years.) Stopped 3-4 years before I started trying to conceive/had children.

I would HATE to smoke now, as you can't smoke anywhere now. It's not nice being a slave to nicotine. I know several people who can't/won't go abroad any further than Spain, because they can't go without a ciggie for more than 2-3 hours. And that IS sad.

One of my neighbours smokes around 20-25 a day. (She works from home.) I think what a terrible waste of money, how appalling her insides her must be, and how she must stink like an ashtray!!! And Heaven knows how much her house must stink. She's only 35 as well. I thought milennials had more sense than to smoke. My DC and all of their friends (colleagues, old school mates, Uni mates, etc,) don't smoke and never have, yet some younger people do... Why? It's just gross.

What amazes me is people who start vaping. Why? Confused Vapes were created to help people give up smoking. They weren't meant to just use if you weren't a smoker!!!

CheezePleeze · 07/06/2025 18:58

Hold the front page.

Someone finds addiction sad 🙄

And no I don't smoke but lets face it, no-one really wants to be addicted to anything do they? Be it nicotine, alcohol, food or class A drugs.

Smoking is fantastic. I have never looked cooler than when I smoked, and it’s an amazing way to stay skinny. I regularly wish I didn’t care about my health so that I could take it back up. Nothing beats a strong, black coffee and a cigarette for breakfast somewhere beautiful like a terrace in Nice

Absolutely this! I kind of admire people who still have the nerve to smoke, I haven’t for almost 30 years but if I was terminally ill I’d definitely start again

Lostuser · 07/06/2025 19:02

I don’t know how anyone can afford it!

Same! God, I loved Berkeley menthols! I haven’t smoked in years, but if I make it to 75, I’m going to start smoking again on my birthday. Make those last few years really count.

I loved a menthol top Consulate Berkley or Richmond. Sadly menthol are no more. I'd give anything for a wee menthol behind the wheelie bin 😆

Uricon2 · 07/06/2025 19:07

Lots of people took up smoking in their teens decades ago, when if not obligatory, was incredibly usual. You could smoke anywhere, offices, pubs, the places you couldn't were rare. It didn't look in anyway pathetic when everyone-literally everyone at times- in a nightclub was doing it.

And yes, the health effects are terrible and I actually gave up years ago, but the "sad" description just shows you don't know what the world was like not all that long ago.

This is fantastic 😅 I have to say, im another who absolutely loved smoking and would start again immediately if it wasn’t going to kill me/ harm and set a poor example to my kids! I smoked from when I was 17/18, started at young farmers dos (of course!), until I was 24 and I’m now 31 so it’s feels a while since I was that cool, young and slim! I don’t go out half so much anymore but when I do, I still miss the camaraderie of the smokers area!

Gettingbysomehow · 07/06/2025 19:09

So awful. I used to smoke back in the 80's everyone did but gave up many years ago.
I work in the vascular department of a hospital as a podiatrist and spend my days dealing with the results of long term smoking. It is horrific beyond anything you can imagine.
None of them have any teeth, smoking causes gum disease and makes all the teeth loose so out they come out without exception. I have to remove rotten feet and toes on a daily basis, and that's not the most horrible part of my job.
The tobacco industry is beyond corrupt, they deserve to be sued off the face of the planet.
I really wish someone could film what goes on in our department as a video nasty documentary and show it in every cinema in the country.

ShesTheAlbatross · 07/06/2025 19:10

Up to them.

But the people who think they look cool smoking are delusional.

vodkaredbullgirl · 07/06/2025 19:12

It's an addiction.

And you can get help with the addiction failing that it’s a slow death take your pick 🤷🏻‍♀️

I am really enjoying the fact that this post has basically become a love letter to smoking. 🤣

As someone who has never smoked, what's so enjoyable about it?

dopamine hit

EveryDayisFriday · 07/06/2025 19:19

Having smoked way too long, I truly don't miss it. It's not for the cool kids anymore, it's expensive, smells and tastes awful, not to mention deadly and ruins your skin.

Its definitely more Waynetta Slob than a Pink Lady nowadays. It took me years to stop smoking and vaping. I'm pleased that a lot of people seem to have quit too, I rarely encounter a smoker in the wild anymore.

Does anyone also remember More Menthol? They were really long and slim, dark brown? I thought I was the most sophisticated teen around when I had a box of them!

mumofoneAlonebutokay · 07/06/2025 19:25

I dont judge adult smokers but I think its so weird they people take up smoking knowing what we know

That said, I bought my first ever vape a few weeks ago, as ive never smoked. I wanted to learn to do smoke rings 😄, but gave myself a headache and gave up immediately

Exciting, me

Tina294 · 07/06/2025 19:37

I think it shows just how addictive smoking is when it's completely gross to anyone who has never smoked - but people who have smoked still miss it decades later.

ShellieAnn · 07/06/2025 19:41

I don't see why you care that much. I have never smoked but if other people want to smoke why would I care? It's not a reason to look down on people or assume I'm better than them. I probably do things that others don't do.

user1471453601 · 07/06/2025 19:42

I stopped smoking nearly 20 years ago when I was diagnosed with lung cancer.

If I was told today that it was back and was terminal, I'd say thanks for the last 20 years and can I have a fag and a g&t please?

This tells me that smoking is odious (if you've ever had to tell your frail mother you may be dying, you'll understand) but also hideously addictive.

The only way not to smoke (or wish to not smoke) is never to smoke.

I have a lot of sympathy for people who have a drug habit (having had one myself). A life time of a drug that makes you feel ok, even for a short while is bloody hard to kick.

Complet · 07/06/2025 19:48

Going outside for a cigarette is an added bonus! You get a bit of a break to yourself, time to reflect, the way you smoke and breathe is calming. I met most of my friends from going outside for a cigarette. It was a good way to meet people at conferences (I hated networking), but all the cool people seemed to smoke and you’d go for a drink afterwards.

I have the occasional one now, probably twice a year. I still enjoy it, even though I know it’s bad for you (most of the fun things are).

There have always been lots of very much not skinny people who smoked though.

Bunchymcbunchface · 07/06/2025 19:50

I loved it too! Used to bring back those skinny menthol ones from holiday!

gave up and don’t regret it, would never vape, it looks ridiculous. Although I will give the vape companies credit for making people think vaping is somehow ‘safer’ than smoking……well played

How does it show that? You can know that smoking was normal and regarded by some as cool back then and still see that does not make it any less sad that people are still poisoning their health with it now when it's not even cool any more.

TeenLifeMum · 07/06/2025 19:53

Can’t understand why people see it as cool. Not sure it’s worth the chemo/radiotherapy imo.
