Finding smoking a really sad thing to do?

Unreasonable or not? I don't get it, and I feel sorry for people outside getting a fix in the rain, it just looks a bit sad really.

I'm one of those annoying part time smokers. I've thankfully been able to take it or leave it for 20 odd years, which means I get to look cool at parties and drinking establishments but don't have to maintain the habit on a daily basis.

A cigarette and a cold pint of beer, alone, on a sunny afternoon in a beer garden. Utter heaven.

Smoking is fantastic. I have never looked cooler than when I smoked, and it’s an amazing way to stay skinny. I regularly wish I didn’t care about my health so that I could take it back up. Nothing beats a strong, black coffee and a cigarette for breakfast somewhere beautiful like a terrace in Nice

This is so on point.
I'm very lucky (imo) in that I can smoke irregularly without any ongoing impulsion to do it. Eg in March i went to Antibes (must be a theme) and bought two packets of fag's. Smoked most of one while there the the rest have been in my handbag since. Have the odd one when I'm on a terrace with a glass of wine, or in a busy pub and fancy a quiet ten minutes outside. Still have over half a packet left.

I actually took up smoking in the south of France - outside a small cafe in St Paul de Vence - aged 19 - the fag and coffee diet - those were the days! Ditched fags years ago along with my care free youth

Oh, Lord, I started smoking just down the road a bit closer to Cagnes, when I was a teenage au pairs love with the children’s dad. Maybe it’s in the air!

Same. I haven't smoked for over thirty years, and I only smoked ten or fifteen a day, but I still miss my first morning ciggie and coffee. I smoked Consulate, the menthol ones, or Berkeley Menthol if I couldn't get Consulate. As a teenager, I used to bond with my Nan over Consulate ciggies, cups of tea and Jimmy Cagney films on the telly. 😅

That’s adorable.

ShaunaSadeki · 07/06/2025 18:24

I can have the odd one and not go back to it. I had a few in Feb and a couple at Easter. No immediate plans for any more, but child free at a festival in August will be a smoke-a-thon

feelingbleh · 07/06/2025 18:24

Don't feel sorry for us this is where the most fun happens in the smoking area why your inside watching everyone's bags

FieldInWhichFucksAreGrownIsBarren · 07/06/2025 18:35

I think you should mind your own fucking business and leave your friend alone to enjoy her fags in peace.
God I was so skinny when I smoked 😭

vodkaredbullgirl · 07/06/2025 18:35

Where else are we to go?

Comedycook · 07/06/2025 18:36

It's a very dated thing to do now.

dontgiveafuck · 07/06/2025 18:36

Smoking is a disgusting dirty habit.
It makes you stink and smell like an ashtray all the pufumes and spays dont cover it up either.
No matter how much you smoke 1 ada or 50 day its disgusting and pricy.

However here i am a smoker.
Wishing i never started but trying to quit is hard.
I was told you have to want to do it not do for others but you want to quit.
Im still waiting for my brain to tell me i really want to quit.

Edited

Oh yes, dancing all night on ciggies, diet coke and rush, no wonder I was slim.

God I loved smoking. If it wouldn't kill me I would start again immediately

+1

MakeItToTheMoon · 07/06/2025 18:40

I rarely see people smoking nowadays that I will do a double take if I do see someone puffing away.

I never have smoked but I always thought it looked cool especially in the movies. Huddled together in the rain may not look so good though.

Auburngal · 07/06/2025 18:43

What I don’t get are young adults that want to smoke. Why? As at my last job, if anyone looked under 25, we asked for ID (Think 25) looked at their DOB on ID and they turned 19 a couple of weeks prior.

Got regular young adults who always had ID to hand.

I’m guessing that grew up in a household/family where everyone smoked and they thought smoking is the norm.

vodkaredbullgirl · 07/06/2025 18:44

Young adults vape instead.

AmyDuPlantier · 07/06/2025 18:45

Ah, I fucking love smoking. I don’t do it now because death but I swear if it wasn’t lethal I’d barely ever put one out.

Auburngal · 07/06/2025 18:45

AmazingBouncingFerret · 07/06/2025 18:02

I miss the need of having to take myself off outside to sit by myself and smoke a cigarette, away from everyone. Nobody talking at me. Just sitting and smoking.

I don’t miss cigarettes though!

Just get some headphones and listen to some of your favourite music to be outside by yourself.

RampantIvy · 07/06/2025 18:46

I hate it.
It killed both of my parents, and I judge anyone who is stupid enough to smoke.

So flame me.

FrodoBiggins · 07/06/2025 18:47

Young adults vape instead.

Which looks extremely uncool. Shame.

This is exactly how I feel

DancingNotDrowning · 07/06/2025 18:48

I’ve barely had more than a couple of packets in my entire life, but occasionally after a long lunch a fag and a glass of champagne are just the thing.

Auburngal · 07/06/2025 18:49

The young adults smoke cigs and rolling tobacco.

”Wot’s your cheapest rolly baccy?” £22.50 for 30g!

MissMoneyFairy · 07/06/2025 18:49

I find condescending patronising people rather sad

Auburngal · 07/06/2025 18:52

Everytime I go to the Leicester Royal Infirmary, despite being a smoke free zone. Always see a patient wearing a hospital gown with something like a drip on drip stand or catheter in holder, looking like death, clutching feebly to a cig.

Most pathetic sight.
