Finding smoking a really sad thing to do?

Unreasonable or not? I don't get it, and I feel sorry for people outside getting a fix in the rain, it just looks a bit sad really.

Given that just under 12% of the adult population in Britain smokes I'm surprised at the number of smokers on this thread.

None of my friends smoke, and only two family members do.

I think there are lots of ex smokers though who have fond memories of their misspent youth who make up a lot of the thread.

That's why I'm puzzled at some of the replies here, why people seem not to give a stuff about their health.

The same reason people drive too fast, drink too much, eat fast food, play dangerous sports.. go figure?

Some people can do these things in moderation, some people do them to extremes; it's part personal choice, part environment/influence, and part genetics. The personal choice part is probably not as big a factor as we'd like to think.

Smoking is fantastic. I have never looked cooler than when I smoked, and it’s an amazing way to stay skinny. I regularly wish I didn’t care about my health so that I could take it back up. Nothing beats a strong, black coffee and a cigarette for breakfast somewhere beautiful like a terrace in Nice

Nothing fantastic about getting lung cancer or emphysema, as well as being higher risk for many other diseases 😔
Not to mention the risks smokers put non smokers around them at, which is even worse.
It's an absolutely foul habit.

I think you’re right. At one time almost every I knew smoked. Now I know two smokers and a handful that vape (me included in the latter, but only occasionally).

It's a disgusting, filthy habit. I only ever see a certain, "Type" smoking, and I definitely question their level of intelligence. It's anti-social, makes you stink, makes your belongings smell rank, affects other people, burns through money and after a while, kills you. What's not to love? 🙄

The worst thing is little children coming into school reeking of it because their parents smoke. It's in their clothes, on their hair, I can smell it when I take books home to mark. I shouldn't have to tolerate that stink when I'm trying to work, and the children shouldn't have to live in it.

Those saying it's an addiction, woe is me, etc. Just... Don't start it, then?

Is that right? Please tell us, what “type” is that?

Why do people even start smoking? Do you want to get lung cancer and die? I enjoy having a healthy set of lungs

In the 90s it’s how you got breaks from work. You would smoke in the work kitchen and have a coffee. If you didn’t smoke you got to work through.

Coffeeishot · 07/06/2025 21:01

I loved and miss smoking it was fab I enjoyed a 🚬 in the rain was a moment to myself just having a smoke ! I'd start again tomorrow if it wasn't going to kill me,

People do lots of things that make no sense, drink alcohol, smoke and take drugs jump out of planes etc etc smoking is just another risk taking thing imo,

MariaDingbat · 07/06/2025 21:01

RampantIvy · 07/06/2025 18:46

I hate it.
It killed both of my parents, and I judge anyone who is stupid enough to smoke.

So flame me.

Same. My biggest fear is that my kids will start someday and I'll lose them young too.

Nailed it.

I’m an ex-smoker who vapes instead. Now that does look sad OP!

Smoking is a disgusting dirty habit.
It makes you stink and smell like an ashtray all the pufumes and spays dont cover it up either.
No matter how much you smoke 1 ada or 50 day its disgusting and pricy.

However here i am a smoker.
Wishing i never started but trying to quit is hard.
I was told you have to want to do it not do for others but you want to quit.
Im still waiting for my brain to tell me i really want to quit.

I've been there - a smoker for over 40 years!
As well as the smell and the cost - don't forget the likely damage to health.
I now have mild/moderate COPD, and smoking killed my Dad.
If it wasn't for all of those issues I would go back to smoking in a hearbeat.....
And boy was I cool - Gitanes, Disque Bleu, Sobranie Black Russian or Cocktail......
I tried every method known before finally giving up wiith the help of Champix, and even that took 3 goes - but you're right - my brain told me I was ready to quit.

God yes!! A ciggy and coffee was my perfect start to the day! But I’ve gave it up now and still it 😂

Bubblebubblepoppop · 07/06/2025 21:09

I went through a phase in my twenties where as soon as I had the first couple of drinks of a night out I would NEED a cigarette. Never bought a pack of my own but would go to the smoking area and chat to anyone and everyone with the sole purpose of scrounging a fag off someone 😂 I miss that confidence I had!

I never got 'addicted' but in my years at uni I'd have 2-3 on most nights out. Then at some point (quite abruptly) they started making me feel sick and I noticed my hangovers would be 10x worse if I smoked on a night out. I never really understood the reason for such a sudden change, it was almost overnight I went from feeling that amazing rush of the first drag to it making me feel horrendous instead.

But yeah anyway, I did it because it felt cool and it made me get drunk more quickly which was great as a student. But the thought of one now just makes me want to hurl.

According to research carried out by ASH, smokers tend to be unemployed or low income, middle aged and predominantly male. I'd also add low intelligence to that.

NecklessMumster · 07/06/2025 21:18

I don't think it looks cool though, altho advertising tried to convince us it did in the past. I think it makes people look nervous, like nail biting does. And I've done both

Beesandhoney123 · 07/06/2025 21:20

You uses to be able to get coloured cocktail cigarettes. I always thought they looked cool.

I don't mind anyone smoking. I don't like people drinking alcohol and doing drugs though.

Gongpostal · 07/06/2025 21:23

I loved smoking! Gave up a heavy smoking life nearly a year ago by accident!(Never when I was pregnant or around the kids) I now vape far more than I ever smoked (very low nicotine) I apparently am saving loads of money but don't ever see it! 🤣 Still love the smell and hunt out smokers especially on a night out, for the smell and also I find them the best company! 😂😂

Nkjkg · 07/06/2025 21:24

SquashedSquid · 07/06/2025 21:07

I don't.

Same here. I used to when younger, but now I genuinely have lost the taste of it.

There was this one girl at DS's school and the only thing she cared about in life was drinking. She only got 2 A-levels, didn't go to uni. Worked at wetherspoons for a bit, and does god knows what now.

summerscomingsoon · 07/06/2025 21:26

I love smoking. If it wasn't so expensive i'd do it more

course it's unhealthy. we know that. but if you've never done it you don't get it.

and it's not really any of your business what other people do as long as they are not blowing it in your face

Well, I hate to burst your bubble of assumed superiority, but I am none of those things. And I do still enjoy a very occasional cigarette. Who knew? 🤣🤣🤣

Youhaveyourhandsfull · 07/06/2025 21:28

Have never properly smoked, but have maybe 3-4 a year. The other day the kids and DP were all out and the sun was shining and I just fancied one with a cup of tea. It was lovely. Won't smoke for a few months now.
Obviously it's awful for you and I'd never want (or be able to afford) to smoke, but for the very occasional thing I do enjoy it.

Eyesopenwideawake · 07/06/2025 21:29

I loved smoking for 50 years, adored it!

Then I stopped loving it so I stopped.

Sunshine1500 · 07/06/2025 21:39

TheFormidableMrsC · 07/06/2025 20:23

I wouldn’t. I stopped cigarettes and took up vaping. It’s not ideal. However, within a couple of weeks I lost my smokers cough. I could go running again with ease. I don’t get breathless anymore or stink of tobacco. I feel much much better for changing over and hopefully my regular reduction in nicotine content will mean I don’t have that addiction forever. I’d never ever have given up smoking without my vape. My GP encouraged me also when I discussed it with him. I am fully aware that we don’t know if there will be a vaping impact going forward but my own experience has been that it’s been a positive move for me and I’m no longer coughing and wheezing.

That’s good you feel better, but I’d rather use nicotine patches/inhaler/gum than vapes. These are all licensed and regulated at least we know what’s in them and the long term effects.

ClaudiaAndHerFringe · 07/06/2025 21:40

@summerscomingsoon But they are. I went out for Sunday lunch the other week and there's a room just behind the restaurant area that leads out to the smoking area. We didn't know that at the time but kept smelling smoke, and thought at first they'd lit the log fire but it was intermittent. Turns out the door to the smoking area was wedged open and second hand smoke drifting in to where people were eating. It was not pleasant.
