AIBU for being so proud of dd achieving this at 17?

Dd has one of her artworks on exhibit at the Royal Scottish Academy’s Annual Open Exhibition. I don’t think I’m BU to be so proud of her, although IRL she doesn’t think it’s worth mentioning to friends! She’s the youngest in the show.

Utterly spectacular. OP, you’re so right to be proud. Your DD is extremely talented. Enjoy that wonderful feeling! I hope her painting sells.

Agapornis · 03/05/2025 10:18

Has she looked into the Royal Drawing School? Their The Drawing Year course is post-grad, so not relevant yet, but free.

Btw being commercially successful as an artist takes quite a bit of networking - and usually family money/network early in the career. But she might already know and have experienced that! Big canvases sell better.

herbygarden · 03/05/2025 10:18

Unbelievable talent! WOW! I work with art everyday. Please ask her for me to sign her work clearly, in 100 years there will be someone like me desperately trying to decipher a signature 😂

WhatMe123 · 03/05/2025 10:19

Wow op what a talent she has proud mum moment 👌🏻

Almahart · 03/05/2025 10:20

Wow what a huge talent. Absolutely incredible

MinistryofThyme · 03/05/2025 10:22

Absolutely mind-blowingly talented. And how lovely to see a thread that is universally saying that!

MaggieBsBoat · 03/05/2025 10:22

😳

what incredible art. She is very talented. And dedicated. Be proud!!

Fabulous!! You've inspired me to take my daughters up today to see the exhibition. Will make sure to see Ruby's masterpiece in the flesh.

What a talent ❤️

Wow! It is a free exhibition and her piece is in the Lower Galleries. There is loads of amazing art there.

@FriendlyLaundryMonster

Just fyi, if it's a route you and your daughter would consider

Iknowaristotlee · 03/05/2025 10:24

I clicked on the insta link and my gaze went straight to the football photo, my first thought was how much I loved art and football at that age too, then realised it was a painting. Just wow.

Nah, she'll be that famous her signature will be widely known – whatever it looks like. Grin

beetr00 · 03/05/2025 10:25

my post @ 10.23 was purely a link to setting up a go fund page.

Could help @FriendlyLaundryMonster's daughter to get to Florence

Hwi · 03/05/2025 10:25

This is truly amazing. Real art. Amazing talent. Clearly kissed by God, you can't teach this - several of my friends' children did art at Advanced Highers and they just can't compare. Amazing.

Pandimoanymum · 03/05/2025 10:25

Oh wow, what a talent! I’m in awe, I’d love to be able to paint portraits half as well as that. Absolutely not unreasonable at all to be super proud of her. I think as a society we are too reticent about sharing our achievements, we’ve been conditioned to think that it might be seen as bragging. I’m not sure if that’s a specifically British thing? But anyway, your daughter has done amazingly well, so well done to her, and yes you absolutely should be as pleased as punch!

spiderlight · 03/05/2025 10:27

I've just looked at her website - her work is incredible! I hope she goes far. You must be so, so proud.

AlwaysFreezing · 03/05/2025 10:28

It gives you goosebumps, when you see this kind of talent. And at 17 too. What a bright, bright future she has ahead of her.

As a country we should be finding some way to make sure talented people like your daughter get the funding they need to be able to study at the very best places possible.

You must be so incredibly proud. I'd want to shout it from the roof tops too.

It might be worth doing some extraordinary things to try and get her to Florence. Send something to the secretary for culture and for education. Ask what they suggest. Crowd funding. Contact high worth individuals known for colle ting or appreciating art. Other artists for advice. All of it.

ForeverDelayedEpiphany · 03/05/2025 10:31

She is absolutely brilliant, OP. What a star. What a talent.

Be proud, incredibly proud. I truly hope she goes far and shines ❤️✨️

OrsolaRosso · 03/05/2025 10:35

I've just looked at her work on her website and her portraits are beautiful! They really seem to capture the soul of the person, they are literally coming out of the canvas at you.

I loved them all, but the one that brought a tear to my eye was the one of her Dad. You must both be so proud as parents.

Hwi · 03/05/2025 10:35

And now, maybe a few words of how it started? Just a few words?

Thank you. I’m starting to think about all of this. I feel like I’d be selling her short not to make the effort. We’ve already drafted a letter about her, just trying to figure out who to send it to. Could potentially put it on a go fund me.

Unsure if this is allowed, could all of our positive feedback translate into helping fund Ruby for the Florence school?

119 positives x £5?

Too cheeky?

Do not want to offend nor break the rules 🌻

eta; whoops mis-calculated (£50 probably too much of a stretch for most)

@FriendlyLaundryMonster definitely go fund route, perhaps post the link ma lovely?

ghostyslovesheets · 03/05/2025 10:41

She is so talented and her work is beautiful ❤️

I’d be proud as well x

Anonyone1 · 03/05/2025 10:42

Absolutely blown away by her artwork, OP. My brain just can’t compute when paintings look like photographs! Just incredible. And not just that - the way she captures her subjects is captivating.
I have no real knowledge or understanding of art, I might add! But I know when something grabs me, and her art does. Off to find her in instagram now. I hope she gets to Florence!

She used to draw but a couple of years ago her art teacher suggested she try painting, so she did and she could pretty much just do it. The first painting she ever did is on her website. She just started painting like that. 🤷🏽‍♀️
