AIBU for being so proud of dd achieving this at 17?

Dd has one of her artworks on exhibit at the Royal Scottish Academy’s Annual Open Exhibition. I don’t think I’m BU to be so proud of her, although IRL she doesn’t think it’s worth mentioning to friends! She’s the youngest in the show.

Wow! Thank you all. When we attended the opening reception last night she didn’t want me to do the proud mum thing! So it’s nice to share here!

I actually just came on to say that while yes you should be incredibly proud, being that age (I also have a 17yo daughter) she may not appreciate you putting this online. It’s not anonymous. There’s a high chance that mums of kids who know your daughter will see this and it will get back to her. My daughter would absolutely die of cringe if I’d made this post - it’s not the same as the articles that cover her work. As you’ve stated, she doesn’t want you to do the proud mum thing. I’m not trying to criticise, just something to consider.

Incredible 😍

Carpetty · 03/05/2025 09:35

Your heart must be literally bursting with pride.
What an incredible talent.
Absolutely stunning.
Congratulations Mum!

beetr00 · 03/05/2025 09:35

@FriendlyLaundryMonster Florence may be the place for her?

I was expecting to be underwhelmed by your post (we’re all proud of our 17 year olds - mine is a qualified dinghy instructor! 😁) but this is other level stuff. Amazing, OP. She’s incredibly talented but obviously she won’t have got to this level on talent alone, she’s obviously a grafter too. Great job raising such a brilliant young woman.

Same here, but these are incredible!!

squarepegroudhole · 03/05/2025 09:36

These are stunning OP. She is super talented.

JustGoClickLikeALightSwitch · 03/05/2025 09:37

Wow! She’s incredibly talented.

Cherrytree86 · 03/05/2025 09:38

Where can you see her other paintings?
she is a great artist!

alloutofcareunits · 03/05/2025 09:38

@FriendlyLaundryMonster that’s incredible, I’m a big fan of watching Portrait Artist of the Year, this rivals many of the entries on there. So yes, you are right to be proud, it’s a truly beautiful portrait (in my opinion) she’s incredibly talented. She’s captured true emotion there, I’ll stop going on now… 😂👌🏻

Novacandy · 03/05/2025 09:39

That is absolutely fantastic ☺️

CornedBeef451 · 03/05/2025 09:39

She is amazing! You should be very proud, it must be hard to keep it in!

Bestfootforward11 · 03/05/2025 09:39

Congratulations! How wonderful, your daughter is super talented! My DD would be exactly the same re not doing the proud mum thing but you must be absolutely bursting with pride and happiness for her 🥰

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 03/05/2025 09:39

Just to reassure, I asked her before posting! She didn’t think anyone would be bothered about it on Mumsnet so didn’t mind.

Thanks all, she doesn’t mind things being online as she has a website etc and already takes commissions. She wants to study at the Florence Academy of Art but you can’t get student loans for it so she’s trying to find funding. She was always creative with a good eye but she just tried painting in oils for the first time a couple of years ago and could pretty much do it straight off! I’m proud of her determination and focus. She works hard, but loves it.

Ah I see you've mentioned Florence.

Could you set up a go fund me page? People would love to support such talent, I'm sure.

Also, keep an eye on Portrait, sky artist of the year

On exhibition at the moment she only has this one in the RSA in Edinburgh. She did have another touring with the Scottish Portrait Awards a few months ago. What she’s exhibiting is really her GCSE work as she isn’t allowed to post any of her current A Level work online until after her exam. So she’s working, but not allowed to put her work out there yet.

She is gifted . Her style Reminds me of Van Gogh
Our pride in our daughters is good for all of us . And fun to share . Thanks . X

Lilactimes · 03/05/2025 09:45

That’s a wonderful painting - I would be soooo proud. Many many congratulations to your daughter.
My friend’s daughter went to uni in Holland to study fine art - and another to Paris. They didn’t pay fees - (but this may be because they got European passports, not sure).
good luck to her x

Will need to think about that. Not sure where to even start.

She should definitely apply to the BBC show - she has a God given talent for portraiture.

Most people who post on MN bragging about how proud they are of their kids I tend to feel sorry for because we are all proud of our kids’ achievements, mundane or not, but wow, your DD’s talent is outstanding and you are right to be proud. She sounds modest and self assured too which is equally commendable. I sense she’ll go a long way.

Fishling · 03/05/2025 09:50

WTF, that's a painting???? Genuinely thought it was a photograph! Thats incredible, she is insanely talented!

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 03/05/2025 09:52

You are all lovely. 💐 If anyone wants to follow her on Insta, that would be amazing!

This is incredible work. So mature. I would not have guessed that they were painted by someone so young. Just breathtaking. Congratulations.

MrsJoanDanvers · 03/05/2025 09:54

Hats off to your daughter. I’d be so proud too-she is something special.
