AIBU for being so proud of dd achieving this at 17?

Dd has one of her artworks on exhibit at the Royal Scottish Academy’s Annual Open Exhibition. I don’t think I’m BU to be so proud of her, although IRL she doesn’t think it’s worth mentioning to friends! She’s the youngest in the show.

Amazing!
I have no creative talent but my dad made a living as an artist for the past 50 years. He only went for it due to splitting up with my mum and needing a job he could do looking after children.
I love to see talented people going for it and being successful.

Since you were all so lovely, just posting an update on dd. She is due to appear on Sky Portrait Artist of the Year tv show next month! She had a really fun time filming this during her Easter holidays and has had to keep it a secret for quite a long time. She'll be in episode 5 on 29th October.

@FriendlyLaundryMonster How fantastic!! Gosh, how very proud you must be. I do hope you managed to get down to London too.

I absolutely love PAOTY (and landscape) and will definitely be watching.

Well done Ruby 🎨

Incredible!

😲

mercilousming · 19/09/2025 03:13

Your daughter is so phenomenally and clearly naturally talented. And it's truly beautiful to see how proud of her you are.

She has an incredible career ahead of her!

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 19/09/2025 07:14

Thank you all! @beetr00 Yes, we all went to London with her. I had to be on set with her at all times as she was under 18, but I tried to give her some distance most of the time. Producers would routinely approach me to ask if they could change the battery in her mic etc. The whole production team were amazing. There were a lot of hoops to jump through beforehand including a good session with a tv psychiatrist who talked everything through with us. I think dh was a bit stressed on the day and it could be an exciting cut! But dd and I accepted that this was not likely going to be her best work, but what she could produce within the time and in the spotlight.

@FriendlyLaundryMonsterI’ve just watched episode 5 of PAOTY, I just want to say your daughter is incredibly talented!! You should definitely be extremely proud of her

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 29/10/2025 15:48

@alloutofcareunits Oh my god, thank you! We haven't seen it yet. Dd is chilled about it and we have friends coming round to see it all together this evening! From your feedback, it sounds like the judges weren't too mean!

alloutofcareunits · 29/10/2025 15:51

@FriendlyLaundryMonster she was amazing! She comes across as such a lovely young woman, judges weren’t mean at all! I’ve already followed her Instagram, I’m sure she is at the beginning of a wonderful career. Best of luck to her, creativity is a wonderful thing

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 29/10/2025 15:56

@alloutofcareunits I could hug you right now! Thank you so much. It’s quite nerve-wracking and I just want to go and watch it but dd has a friend here and they’re making chocolate strawberries and we’ve agreed to catch it tonight.

@FriendlyLaundryMonster I remembered your original post and have been looking out for her being on (hope that doesn’t sound like I’m a crazy stalker, I’m really not I just love seeing younger people being creative) so thought I’d comment as I’ve been off work today and watched the latest episode. Have a great night watching her.

LaurieFairyCake · 29/10/2025 17:01

Unbelievably talented, I’m blown away by how good she is

@FriendlyLaundryMonster

She wiz robbed!! Loved her portrait of Emily.

Fiona would've been my other choice.

Well done Ruby, her future is very bright Mum, such joy that she'll be able to follow her dream.

Next stop Florence?

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 29/10/2025 22:01

Thanks all for watching and supporting. I’m really proud of Ruby. She did well! And it was very interesting to hear what the judges were saying about her work.

Her work is stunning, phenomenal talent.

You should be so proud 👏🏻 🍾💖 I truly can't understand why they didn't put her through - i was literally shouting at the TV!

Sunloungerhogger · 30/10/2025 00:09

Fabulous achievement, and definitely not BU for being proud as punch! Well done her - congratulations.

Smidge001 · 30/10/2025 00:10

I watched too, after reading this thread the day before. She's brilliant, and so lovely too! Definitely thought they were going to put her through. How much does she charge for commissions?! She definitely has a career ahead of her.

sparkleghost · 30/10/2025 01:07

YANBU at all, her work is incredible OP. She’s very talented. So pleased for you both! 🎉

FriendlyLaundryMonster · 30/10/2025 08:10

@Smidge001 Thank you! She takes commissions at a minimum size of 12” x 16” at £1400 (and spends a lot longer on them than 4 hours!) she has a bit of a list but everyone so far has been so happy with their painting 😊

SlightlyJaded · 31/10/2025 20:44

I had been literally looking forward to watching and couldn't do it until this evening. So so brilliant - the emotion she managed to generate from Emily in four hours is a testament to the magic that comes out of her brush.

I work in telly and I can only imagine the stress and pressure she would have felt - she did herself proud and I look forward to seeing her career develop. What a talent.

deeahgwitch · 31/10/2025 20:54

Oh my !!!!
That is amazing. Congratulations to her and to you for having such a a talented daughter who is sooo modest. 💐
