The utter despair of losing something

kindnessforthewin · 26/04/2025 20:34

I realised I had misplaced brand new expensive sunglasses today, around mid morning, I just thought I hadn’t seen them in a while, so checked the last place I remember having them (the car).

DH almost 100% I brought them un as we know not to leave anything in the car.

When we arrived at a soft play (of all places) I took them off and left in central reservation of car as I didn’t want to take them in. That was 10 days ago, I just knew they weren’t in the house as I’d have seen them. I have a couple pairs and just got stuck on the other pair recently, as you do.

I don’t understand it at all. It’s ruined the entire day. Taken over. I can’t stop wondering where they have gone.

anyone else get obsessive like this?

Well yes if I lose something expensive it would bother me definitely.

TokyoSushi · 26/04/2025 20:53

Yep, in the last year I have done this with sunglasses, ear buds and a yoga bolster(!), they were all ‘nice things’ and it’s driven me a bit potty ruminating over where they are/I left them!

kindnessforthewin · 26/04/2025 21:15

I found my AirPods in the glovebox 4 months after I lost them. I really hope the sunglasses show up. Did any of yours @TokyoSushi?

I left my Chanel soap in a hotel last week … gutted

Dollshousedolly · 26/04/2025 21:20

Would you phone the soft-play place, just in case you wore or brought them in with you and lost them there ?

I think when you lose something you can convince yourself that you left them in a specific place/last had them somewhere, etc but it’s just you’ve convinced yourself of that because it’s what you believed happened. Then you’d find the item somewhere else completely and recall that yes, that’s where you actually left them.

kindnessforthewin · 26/04/2025 21:23

100% I took them off in the car before getting out and put them in that compartment because DH even said they won’t get scratched in there.

my theory is I left them in the car and I live in London, so we left car unlocked for a second and someone pinched them (happens a lot here) but we are usually careful to lock the car. They weren’t in there when we drove to PIL on Saturday of Easter (3 days later). Short time to leave car unlocked and someone take them.

I went to newsagents to drop off a Vinted of all things so DH wonders if I left car unlocked then or left in newsagents but they said not.

it’s so annoying because I’ve even question the cleaner who came last week (had never met her before she was sent my the woman who manages our usual cleaner who was away)but I just don’t know where they were to wonder. It would be pretty brazen to just pick up Chanel glasses and walk out with them.

I once went on a trip to New York, treated myself to a pair of expensive (for me) sunglasses from there, and promptly lost them a week after we got back. I'd only worn them once! I was too ashamed to tell my DH about it. Luckily we moved house a year later and I found them fallen down the back of a big chest of drawers. If we hadn't moved I think I'd never have found them.

MathsMum3 · 26/04/2025 21:30

Totally empathise. I can't bear losing something, and it's not about the cost. If I lose something in the home, I search and search until I find it. If I lose something away from home, I feel so sad and irresponsible! I'll always go back and search if I think I might find it.

User415373 · 26/04/2025 21:30

Yes I get this. I literally don't stop looking though. Tipped the house upside down yesterday to find my sunglasses and totally resented having to go out once without them. I will look for days! I haven't actually lost lost many things though, they nearly always turn up!

kindnessforthewin · 26/04/2025 21:33

@MathsMum3what if you just don’t know whether you lost them out or inside the house. That’s what’s upsetting me the most. If they’re in the house just WHERE. I’ve looked almost everywhere but I guess my AirPods turned up several months later.

OP posts:
kindnessforthewin · 26/04/2025 21:33

@User415373i really hope I find them, did you find them?

Nope, all still missing 🫠

Symposium · 26/04/2025 21:35

Have you looked under the seats in the car?

menopausalmare · 26/04/2025 21:36

Yes, I couldn't find my old faithful coat today, which is very unlike me. I trawled back through my photos and calendar, realised that I lost it last Tuesday/Wednesday and then found it in my bike pannier 😊

kindnessforthewin · 26/04/2025 21:36

@Symposiumyes moved them both forward. It’s such a mystery. And misery haha

Yes, it's awful! I lost my prescription sunglasses two weeks ago. I swear they were on my head, I went into the utility room and...pouf, they were gone. I've turned the house upside down looking for them.

QueenOfHiraeth · 26/04/2025 21:38

OMG me too! Last year I bought some expensive glasses and hadn't really got into wearing them regularly as they needed a bit of adjustment
I remember having them and another pair of spare glasses in my case when we went to visit friends a couple of months ago. Last week I suddenly thought I should start wearing them and, you guessed it, both pairs are nowhere to be found. I've turned out every bag, had the house up and had our friends check at their end but no joy.
It's driving me mad!

AuraBora · 26/04/2025 21:40

Yep I get totally obsessed if I lose something - especially if im fairly certain it's in the house. I'll turn the house upside down looking and get really cross and agitated!

Also, I will often will see something lying around for ages and then when I need it, suddenly I can't find it. Drives me mad (I have a bad habit of not putting things back in their place but I'm really trying to work.on it).

Hope you find them!

LadyAddle · 26/04/2025 21:40

I know it's really a metaphor, but I always think the Bible parable of the woman who loses a coin and turns the house inside out looking for it, and then tells all her friends when she finds it, is really good observation - I obsessively search for mislaid things. I even contemplated hypnosis when I lost a bracelet I was fond of. I just want to know where it went.

kindnessforthewin · 26/04/2025 21:40

Here’s another question, when folk have finally found something after looking all over, where was said item?

I tipped up the entire house and then kept a keen eye out for my AirPods. Luckily didn’t buy new ones, just used my old ones and borrowed DH for gym sessions. Months later they turned up in the depths of the glove box. Mind you how have my sunglasses been ‘stolen’ in 3 days and no one found an unlocked car or AirPods Pro in 4 months!

Tumblingthrough · 26/04/2025 21:45

I lost mine for months and eventually found them inside my carry-on flight bag. I had checked in there but black lining and black case …

They will be in the last place you look 😉 😂

Blingismything · 26/04/2025 21:50

I lost a gold chain and diamond pendant and found it a few months later in the solution in a jewellery cleaning jar. (similar to silver dip) was pretty chuffed.

Stegochops · 26/04/2025 21:50

I have found my people. I also can’t let go of lost things and get really wound up about it!

thecatdidit · 26/04/2025 21:52

Ask St Anthony for assistance in locating lost items.
I have several lone earrings 😭.
Also I lost a bunch of bananas that were on the side in my kitchen. Just me and DH live here, pets sadly no longer alive so I can't blame them either. DH doesn't eat bananas unless forced to.

kindnessforthewin · 26/04/2025 22:02

@thecatdiditirony of your username and your banana conundrum.

you couldn’t make it up, after looking all day for sunglasses while running around after 2.5 yr old and 6.5 month old DCs, I finally sat down to have dinner (after everyone else had) after they went to bed and couldn’t find the cheese. Where was it? The packet was still out and I remember DC asking for more and DH giving it. Where did it go? An entire block disappeared. So I spent more time looking for cheese. Our small dog has clearly jumped onto the table when we were putting DCs to bed and eaten the entire block!!!
