The utter despair of losing something

I realised I had misplaced brand new expensive sunglasses today, around mid morning, I just thought I hadn’t seen them in a while, so checked the last place I remember having them (the car).

DH almost 100% I brought them un as we know not to leave anything in the car.

When we arrived at a soft play (of all places) I took them off and left in central reservation of car as I didn’t want to take them in. That was 10 days ago, I just knew they weren’t in the house as I’d have seen them. I have a couple pairs and just got stuck on the other pair recently, as you do.

I don’t understand it at all. It’s ruined the entire day. Taken over. I can’t stop wondering where they have gone.

anyone else get obsessive like this?

Buy the Vinted ones! They will either be yours in which case you can try and get justice from the thieving bastards or you will have a pair to put in your box.

Plus buying a replacement is the only certain way of finding the original pair!

kindnessforthewin · 27/04/2025 13:56

@Letsummercommencei can’t be 100% they’re real so don’t want to pay in that case. If only I took a pic of my old pairs serial number I would buy the Vinted ones and refuse to pay and take to a small claims court. Lesson learned! Everyone take pics of your serial numbers. I think they’re a rare model of Chanel sunglasses so probably are mine but DH thinks they’re common. What does he know haha. He had actually bought me a replacement pair and found a voucher so got them for £270. Eyes watering.

It’s so frustrating as the odds are that they are yours. Or now that your lovely DH has bought you a new pair you’ll find the old ones and can return the new ones. Fingers crossed!

It is always horrible to lose something but even worse when you suspect it’s been stolen. Don’t discount the cleaner. We had cleaners from an agency and even though we had the same ones each week one of them took some expensive skin care. It was something I had only just opened so knew I had had it on the Monday night as I used it. Went to use it again on Wednesday night and it was gone. The only people who had been in the bedroom were the cleaners. Similarly had a chunky gold bracelet get swiped by cleaners in another house.

Definitely say a prayer to St Anthony. I once lost a diamond stud earring in the bedroom I was staying in at my parents’ house and my mum and I pulled the room apart and the bed which was built in. I assumed it had fallen down into a tiny nook and without taking the bed out we wouldn’t find them. Mum said a prayer to St Anthony and a while later I walked into the bedroom and the earring was in 5he middle of the floor! Couldn’t believe it.

I never ever lock my van (live somewhere extremely rural), and not once has one of my sacks of well rotted manure gone missing.

You do know that bears can open vehicle doors, right?

If you were putting away new clothes for DS have you checked the drawers/wardrobe/elsewhere in his room?

kindnessforthewin · 28/04/2025 19:29

reunited!!!!! I was right to declare then not in the house or car. I’d checked every place possible. However, I had one last place to call. On Good Friday I went for lunch and while the restaurant didn’t have them as I had called, I hadn’t called the beautician next door where I popped in to get my eyebrows threaded. I called them not holding out any hope, almost as a last chance. They had them! I didn’t even remember wearing them to go out. Or even not having them after the beauticians. I just have zero memory of taking them, them being on the table during lunch or not having them after lunch when we went to get ice cream. I was very wound up at something that happened shortly before I left, so my mind was probably elsewhere and my usual sharp focus and memory was not working. Ooops.

The strangest thing is I only noticed on Saturday they were gone, 10 days after I left them, and funnily enough I was back in there maybe less than an hour after I first realised I couldn’t find them, as my eyebrows had regrown in record time. I’d barely started looking at home. Can you imagine I would have been stood right next to them at some point (by the till) and not realised. Then 48 hours of sheer despair. Thank you all for getting me through it.

Brillant ! It is a great feeling to finally find something you thought was gone forever. Your DH must be delighted too. Was probably gutted that you'd lost them.

TweetingHurricane · 28/04/2025 21:00

It’s an awful feeling OP. I haven’t lost many things outside the house except my keys (or so I thought) 6 months later I feel something in the bottom fabric of my bag, and there they were having gone through a hole in the bottom. It was weird knowing they were literally with me the whole time being carried around while I was driving myself mad wondering where they’d gone

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 28/04/2025 21:03

I feel very annoyed when I lose something I really like. It’s a feeling of real frustration l. You want to go back in time and not have lost them but of course you can’t!

So glad you found them though.

I really through id lost a beloved leather jacket, but I turned out to have left it at my aunt’s house, and it was under a load of coats on her coat hooks so she hadn’t even noticed.

TweetingHurricane · 28/04/2025 21:07

Awesome! Just shows how our brains can forget sometimes

LushLemonTart · 28/04/2025 21:58

@kindnessforthewin that's amazing

Tigerlilian · 28/04/2025 22:13

Professor Solomon says most missing things are usually within about 18 inches of where you expect them to be but have slipped behind something and are out of sight.
i have found things in the car that have blended in with the background sometimes in the side pockets of the doors.

Oh that’s such good news @kindnessforthewin!
