The utter despair of losing something

I realised I had misplaced brand new expensive sunglasses today, around mid morning, I just thought I hadn’t seen them in a while, so checked the last place I remember having them (the car).

DH almost 100% I brought them un as we know not to leave anything in the car.

When we arrived at a soft play (of all places) I took them off and left in central reservation of car as I didn’t want to take them in. That was 10 days ago, I just knew they weren’t in the house as I’d have seen them. I have a couple pairs and just got stuck on the other pair recently, as you do.

I don’t understand it at all. It’s ruined the entire day. Taken over. I can’t stop wondering where they have gone.

anyone else get obsessive like this?

I'm the complete opposite as in if I lose something I really don't worry too much about it.. it'll turn up is my thoughts usually. My husband on the other hand will turn the house upside down to the point of no one wanting to be anywhere near him! He'll huff and puff and really do my head in. He once lost a pair of prescription sunglasses and was unliveable with for weeks. They turned up a year later under the passenger seat of the car.. really far in, he had checked that car inside out at least three times!

@loveyoutothemoonandtosaturnI wonder why losing something sends the most sane of us totally around the bend. I get like this and it makes me question why I ever buy anything nice! Usually I trust myself to look after things, I’m starting to think my mum era of two DCs is not the time to buy nice things as life is hectic enough ;)

I firmly believe in The Borrowers when you lose something in the house! It’s the only explanation sometimes 😁.

I lost my favourite pair of sunglasses on a walk the other month as well as a brand new pair of gloves on the same walk.

BoldBlueZebra · 26/04/2025 22:13

I lost my left earbud over a month ago - have ransacked the house no sign of it - I’ve bought new ones so I expect to locate it at any moment

SallyDraperGetInHere · 26/04/2025 22:16

I plugged in my AirPods to charge before heading off for a flight; opened the case on the plane to find it empty, and said pods cannot be found anywhere 😭 we are now on day 11 of the search

1Ivebeenthinking · 26/04/2025 22:18

I’ve done this with £80 noise cancelling ear plug things. Easy to lose

Worryabouteverything · 26/04/2025 22:26

17 years ago I lost one of my topaz earrings.
Devistated as bought by a late family member.
I know where I lost it. Outside a sports complex.
Even all these years later I still look for it if we visit.

I've done this, have you checked your pockets? I had taken them out when someone starting chatting on a dog walk and stuffed them absentmindedly into my pocket. Totally forgot and took the empty case with me the next time.

I once lost my engagement ring and I was bereft. I knew I’d lost it in the house as I’d always take it off at night and leave on bedside table, and I hadn’t been out. Realised I’d been ironing in the bedroom and had a brain wave - thought it could have caught on an item of clothing so emptied my wardrobe. It was inside a boot that had been next to the bedside table and I’d put away in the wardrobe. Never been so relieved, so much so I stopped wearing it and just keep it safely in a box.

thenightsky · 26/04/2025 23:02

OMG... this was me last xmas. I have a lovely Chloe handbag, bought for me by DD when she was working abroad in the fashion industry. I had it for her wedding in Sept (its in the pics). I was so desperately hungover the next day I don't remember packing to come home. Come Xmas and a party... where is my Chloe bag that matches my outfit? Not on the bag hangers, not in the wardrobe, not inside a coat on a hanger. Gone.

Found it last month after a forensic search. I'd given it to DH to bring home from wedding coz my case was stuffed too fully. He'd put in a random bag for life, with suit carriers stuffed on top and thrown it into the spare room.

I obsessed about that bloody bag from Xmas to March.

Here’s another question, when folk have finally found something after looking all over, where was said item?

I tipped up the entire house and then kept a keen eye out for my AirPods. Luckily didn’t buy new ones, just used my old ones and borrowed DH for gym sessions. Months later they turned up in the depths of the glove box. Mind you how have my sunglasses been ‘stolen’ in 3 days and no one found an unlocked car or AirPods Pro in 4 months!

Air pods turned up months later in a tiny pocket of my husband’s backpack.
Sunglasses had fallen between the sofa and the wall.

ThatRoseBear · 26/04/2025 23:05

This is me! I lost my expensive sunglasses 4 years ago and still to this day live in hope that they will turn up. We moved bedrooms last year so I thought I would find them then ,but no. Still gutted about them :(

clary · 26/04/2025 23:14

I also hate losing things @kindnessforthewin and will go one and on, driving everyone mad, until I find them.

I cannot have expensive sunglasses (umbrellas, earbuds, gloves) bc I either trash them in some way (scratch the sunglasses for example) or lose them. It’s odd how there are some things you lose and yet others you can always find.

In terms of where things turn up:

  • DS found his phone in a football boot (only worn for matches on grass, so once a week)
  • I found my passport on the scanner (oh yes; I had ordered a new one by then)
  • I found a missing pair of my running trousers in DS2's clothes pile (my mistake)
  • Other missing clothes are often put away with towels or sheets
  • Dh puts house keys in coat pockets all the time

Nooooooo @bigknitblanket please start wearing it again! My engagement ring was an antique (not valuable as such bc of that, just an Edwardian ring) and the band was very thin so I didn't wear it very much. Then we were burgled and it was stolen. I wish I had been wearing it.

ETA: meant to say before that DS had some expensive Samsung earbuds that I bought him and one disappeared in his student house while he was sleeping (and wearing them in bed). He looked and looked and couldn;t find it. I went to give it a mum’s look (that's a thing!) and I also was very frustrated not to find it. ended up buying him some more. Luckily one of the original pair didn't work that well and that was the one that went missing but even so. grrrr

Lobsterteapot · 27/04/2025 01:53

I spent ten minutes furiously looking for my phone last week and found it later in my bra 🙈 (I was wearing a jumper, hoody and a coat)

CigarettesAndLoveBites · 27/04/2025 01:57

I lost my lovely Radley card holder containing 2 bank cards and 2 supermarket loyalty cards a few days ago. I retraced my steps but it was nowhere to be found. Cancelled the cards a few hours later - fortunately they hadn't been used. It's been a proper hassle to get the cards reissued, it will take 7 working days so no spending for me this week. But I'm really sad about the card holder. I've had it for years, I treated myself with a John Lewis voucher when I saw it in the sale at a time I was really skint. I keep thinking about it sitting on a wall waiting for me to come back to find it...

BoxOfCats · 27/04/2025 01:57

What's even worse is grieving the said lost item for months, spending a fortune replacing it, only to the find the lost item a week later.

This is how I have two identical gold necklaces!

notanothernamechange24 · 27/04/2025 02:27

It’s so annoying isn’t it! I’ve. Lost a charging cable for something I need to sell. Haven’t used said item for over two years hence wanting to sell it. Tore house apart trying to find it but it’s gone!

Barney16 · 27/04/2025 02:46

I'm an excellent finder. It's my superpower. I have always been able to find stuff. Lost things aren't ever where you think they are, you just convince yourself they are there. The more you think about it the more certain it seems. I firmly believe things we use a lot become almost invisible, we are so used to them although tiny things are a particular challenge. Stop thinking about whatever you are looking for for a bit, then have another go.

Sunglasses - still can't find them 😡
Ear buds - in one of the zip up pockets of my work bag 🎉
Running watch - in the salad drawer in the fridge 🤭

Tbrh · 27/04/2025 03:16

Did you call the softplay place, someone might have handed them in. I found a phone last week which I was very happy to unite with its owner

HiRen · 27/04/2025 03:18

I reckon they’re in your car but because they’re black. You need to do a few emergency stops for them to slide out from somewhere, or at least rattle.

Monty27 · 27/04/2025 03:33

@kindnessforthewin I seriously get anxious if I can't put my hand on something immediately. Seriously stressed. The trouble is I do it so regularly these days I'm afraid to take anything out with me even to the shops. Obviously I have to and when I'm at a till I go into meltdown trying to remember where I put my cards or purse safely.
If I know something has been misplaced, I too pray to St Anthony and it turns up. Then I thank him.
I'm not even religious.

I reckon you left them on the reception desk.

LillyPJ · 27/04/2025 03:34

I get annoyed with myself when I lose things because I think I try really hard not to. It's not about the cost (I don't have expensive things) - I just hate that I'm not as organised as I'd like to be.

LillyPJ · 27/04/2025 03:37

@Barney16 I think you should start a career as a Super Finder!
