You would have to be a lot bigger than a 16 to need a seatbelt extender! You'll be fine. They mean the belt itself is 30 inches end to end; a plane belt only goes across your waist, not around it. If they meant it was to fit someone with a maximum 30" total waist measurement, at least half the adults on the plane would need an extender!

Manxexile · 31/03/2025 14:32

SoSoLong · 31/03/2025 10:21

The belt doesn't go all around your waist though so of course it will fit.

This ^

All the seatbelt needs to do is to go across your lap - it doesn't go around your waist.

(Check your car seatbelt. The bit that goes across your lap is nowhere near as long as your waist circumference)

ThursdayWaitingForChocolate · 31/03/2025 14:36

I am an apple shaped (big tummy) 16 and fly regularly with Ryanair, no problems

TheRealHousewife · 31/03/2025 14:37

@ThisVividGreenEagle I thought the belts were more ‘lap’ belts so they don’t actually fit around one’s waist. Have a great holiday!

ItGhoul · 31/03/2025 14:42

Bogginsthe3rd · 31/03/2025 10:12

That does seem a bit risky at your size/ circumference. Can you not just ask for a belt extender on the plane if needed though ? When is the flight ? Could you slim down before a bit to be safe (if it's a summer holiday)?

The OP has since clarified that her actual waist measurement is 35.5" and that she was rounding up to 40" to be on the safe side. However, even if her waist measurement was 40" she would still be a size 20-22 at most and would absolutely not need a seatbelt extender. Don't be absurd.

Woodenpigeon · 31/03/2025 14:43

Everyone talking about waist measurement being wrong. I’m now a size 16/18 and have loss 2 stone and my waist is 40, I have only lost 2 inches from my waist.
I’m now a fat apple especially since the menopause!

Laura36TTC · 31/03/2025 14:48

You will be fine 👍

MollyButton · 31/03/2025 12:41

The problem as well is that sometimes the seatbelts aren’t “full size” as sometime a section has been cut out (dirt or something). Not a problem for the OP, but it has meant I had to swap seats with one of my children at least once.

I found that flying with Virgin. We flew out Premium Economy and it was fine but came back upper class and I needed an extender as apparently the seatbelt length can vary. I was embarrassed to ask bu It was fine though, cabin crew didn't bat an eyelid.

Edited to add I'm a 18-20

Ah ok. I’m sitting reading these saying how do others size 20-22 have plenty of room. I’m an 18/20 and have used the extenders. Though I don’t always need them, so this makes sense.

Op they are very discreet and pleasant and have them on the plane, don’t be stressing.

Passive aggressive and very obviously so!

Passive aggressive or just aggressively rude?? 😉

MyrtlethePurpleTurtle · 31/03/2025 15:14

ThisVividGreenEagle · 31/03/2025 13:11

sorry guys 35 not 40 rounded up to be on safe side

You'll be fine.

Even if you're more than a 40" waist, you'll be fine since the 30" seatbelt goes only round half of you - meaning effectively you can have a 60" waist.

Then add on an extender which for Ryanair, I think, is 14". (Which again is only going round half of you).

You'll be fine. Enjoy your time away.

PS I flew Ryanair yesterday - quite a few people who sound significantly larger than you were seated without issue

TheBewleySisters · 31/03/2025 15:19

@ThisVividGreenEagle I flew Ryanair last year when I was a 16, verging on an 18 and the belt fit fine - it just snaps closed across your lap, it doesn't go all the way round your waist. I'm no longer that size, but when I was, the seat belt wasn't a thing I worried about. (Making sure we book an aisle seat or front row so that I can get to the loo easily is more important for me!)

Put it out of your mind, relax and enjoy your holiday.

Stresshead84x · 31/03/2025 15:25

BMW6 · 31/03/2025 10:18

OP if your waist is 40" then you are size 22 not 16.

Size 16 would be 34" waist.

Sometimes It's where you carry weight- my waist size is always a bit bigger than the rest of me due to being an apple but it doesn't make me go up a size.

WhyCantTheyJustBeKids · 31/03/2025 15:26

Floatlikeafeather2 · 31/03/2025 10:11

Are you sure you've got your waist measurement right? If you have, how are you a size 14?

I wondered the same as my waist is 33" and I'm size 16.

ChorizoDog · 31/03/2025 15:47

My daughter is a size 22 and we flew last week. She was ok without an extender.

CriticalCritter · 31/03/2025 15:53

Plane seat belts don’t really go round your waist though do they, they go over your lap so it’s more to do with your measurement at the hip/top of thigh.

Just ask for a seat belt extender when you’re boarding. They are discrete and very respectful. Enjoy your holiday and don’t worry about anything ♥️

GreatGardenstuff · 31/03/2025 16:56

The belt only has to fit over the front of you, not all the way round. Have you been on a plane before?!

TicklishMintDuck · 31/03/2025 18:27

I’m the same size as you and the seat belts are ok. 👍🏻

Talkingfrog · 31/03/2025 18:28

Idontjetwashthefucker · 31/03/2025 10:07

At size 16 i don't think you need to worry, I flew at size 22 on Ryanair, Jet2 and Qatar with no issues

We sre booked with jet 2 - size 20- 22 so knowing you had no issues makes me feel better.

“Risky”?! She’s a size 16, which many women are lol

DonnaBanana · 31/03/2025 18:32

If the belt is 30 and your waist is over 30 I wouldn’t risk it to be honest. Ask another airline and see if their planes can fit you

A belt goes from the side of the seat to the side of the seat. Not all around your waist like a belt.

JRM17 · 31/03/2025 18:46

A 16 where. I'm a 16 and my waist is no where near 40". However I flew when I was much bigger and got fine.

Pomegranatecarnage · 31/03/2025 18:49

You’ll be fine!
