No one would bellow that. Cabin crew are experienced professionals who wouldn’t shame a passenger for needing an extender. It’s not a big deal.

I definitely read something by a fat writer who said it happened to her. Either Sofie Hagen or Roxane Gay, I think.

Well that’s a shame. Hopefully an exceptional case not the rule.

Highly unlikely

That does seem a bit risky at your size/ circumference. Can you not just ask for a belt extender on the plane if needed though ? When is the flight ? Could you slim down before a bit to be safe (if it's a summer holiday)?

Risky?? What are you talking about? She is a size 16, of course she won't need an extender!

Bogginsthe3rd · 31/03/2025 11:32

She also says she has a 40 inch waist which is really big ! Ryanair also have smaller seats/space/ buckles

Passive aggressive and very obviously so!

Rosecoffeecup · 31/03/2025 11:47

I've used an extender and seen others use them, the cabin crew have always been discreet and professional when assisting

Antonania · 31/03/2025 11:53

"at your circumference" 😂

You'll be completely fine OP. I've never come close to having a problem at size 20. There are a lot of inches round the back not included in the measurement. If a size 16 woman needed an extender a load of the men would too.

fluffiphlox · 31/03/2025 11:53

What I’ve seen of airline passengers you will be completely average. I’m much fatter and have never had an extender except for a tiny plane in Zambia. And I wasn’t the only one.

MaggieBsBoat · 31/03/2025 11:57

My DH asks for one every time he flies (all the time) and not once has it been bellowed across the plane. I find the idea that it would be really odd.
You’ll be ok OP.

MothersDayLieIn · 31/03/2025 11:59

Size 16?? When I was size 14 I wasn't even overweight! A size 16 is relatively normal size these days! I honestly wouldn't worry about it :)!! (Unless you meant to type size 26. Size 26 could potentially be an issue, but size 16 is fine)

VerySkilledFirefighter · 31/03/2025 12:04

The seat belt doesn’t go all the way around you, it goes over your front - so in theory a 30” seat belt will accommodate a probably 47” waist as their seats are 17” wide.

Okayornot · 31/03/2025 12:06

30 inches is just the front- airline seatbelts do not go all the way around. It’ll be fine.

Are you for real. A 30 inch belt will be one side ie good enough for a much larger waist.

If it was for a 30" waist it wouldn't fit 99.9% of adults who get on a plane

This - the belt straps are fixed to either side of the seat. 30" is the total length of the lapstrap that comes up your sides and round your front.

thesugarbumfairy · 31/03/2025 12:13

I haven't flown with ryanair for years, but I had a 40" waist last year (wearing size UK20) and it was fine on easyjet. I mean there wasn't much wiggle room but it wasn't an issue at all.

SpringIsSpringing25 · 31/03/2025 12:16

You'll be fine!!

If not as many have said just get an extender on board, yes it can be a bit embarrassing, but the likelihood of seeing any of these people again is very low.

If you're worried about asking in front of people you're travelling with, why?? Unless it's for work there are people that know you and like you enough to want to go on holiday with you, why are they gonna care in the slightest if you use an extender on the plane?

Some of the seatbelts on the plane have been shortened so much (due to wear and tear) that even Twiggy would need an extender and some of them are new and quite long so the Jabberwocky wouldn't even need an extender.

Honestly, none of it is worth worrying about. And I say that as somebody. Who has used extenders and worried about it, but no longer worry due to all the variables and other things I said. Try to put it at the back of your mind and concentrate on looking forward to your holiday.

FamilyPhoto · 31/03/2025 12:17

Im a 16-18 currently and they fit me.

rosemarble · 31/03/2025 12:25

30 inches will be to cover the front of you - total size would be OK for someone up to about 50 inch I imagine, it doesn't go all the way round, does it.

soupyspoon · 31/03/2025 11:26

No, I distinctly remember reading it. And wasn't surprised by it either. Anyone who has spent any time listening to the very obese talking about their experiences has heard a lot of similar stuff. A lot of people treat fat people like crap. And when other people tell them that stuff that has happened to them doesn't happen, that makes it even worse.

MollyButton · 31/03/2025 12:41

The problem as well is that sometimes the seatbelts aren’t “full size” as sometime a section has been cut out (dirt or something). Not a problem for the OP, but it has meant I had to swap seats with one of my children at least once.

It was Sophie Hagen, sounds like an awful experience and one I am very grateful not to have experienced (despite needed an extender multiple time)

why in each of your comments are you making the OP sound like she is the size of a bastard planet?

I'm using her measurements! If there's one airline to doublecheck measurements with its Ryanair!

RB68 · 31/03/2025 12:45

I have flown RA as a 22, 20 and 18 and its been fine - remember its a lap belt not a waist belt anyway. Never used an extender on any flight either
