That's some round up!

definetly is but to me if everyone said 40 inches is fine then 35.5 is fine too

mine is about 35-36 i double checked definetly either rounded up earlier or don wrong but a size 22 is absouloutley massive on me as i always tend to size up ridiculously and have to send back but i have googled and 35-41 can be a size 16 too x

I am a size 16 and am very tall for a woman at 185cm and I fly Ryanair almost monthly. I’ve never had a problem fitting in the seatbelts.

have a fantastic flight @ThisVividGreenEagle

I'm male and when I wore 40 inch waist trousers I easily fit seatbelts on planes, Ryanair included, with inches to spare. (Now down to 36 inch woohoo!)

thank you so much! and how did your drop some of your weight if you dont mind me asking x?

I have flown RA as a 22, 20 and 18 and its been fine - remember its a lap belt not a waist belt anyway. Never used an extender on any flight either

Yes. Seatbelts go across your lap not round your waist

Bogginsthe3rd · 31/03/2025 10:12

That does seem a bit risky at your size/ circumference. Can you not just ask for a belt extender on the plane if needed though ? When is the flight ? Could you slim down before a bit to be safe (if it's a summer holiday)?

I may just be in a particularly bad mood today but just FECK off, you sour old trout. For numerous reasons

I think if the worst is having to wear an extension then you’ll be fine. Thousands of people do it every day.

BowTiesPinkTail · 31/03/2025 13:41

I'm a uk 20, we flew ryanair last year and I fit in the belt without an extender. If you do find you need one tell them when you enter the plane and they will give you one (they did me but I didn't need it).

FateReset · 31/03/2025 13:42

40" waist would make you a size 22 at least. Are you sure you didn't measure around hips?

Dress size varies a lot. I'm usually a 12 but can comfortably wear a 14 or a 10 depending how stretchy the fabric is, the cut etc. I have wide hips so usually wear a 14 in jeans then take the waist in.

Try measuring waist at smallest part

CandyCane457 · 31/03/2025 13:43

I’m a size 18 and have never had an issue before but last year I flew to Krakow and was done on tne way there but needed an extender on tne way back. Earlier this year went to Portugal, needed an extender on tne way there but not the way back- it makes no sense!
But I will say the airline staff are fantastic and so discreet and it wasn’t an issue at all, apart from a little bit of a red face from me!

AthWat · 31/03/2025 13:44

Remember the seatbelts are not only catering for women....40 inches is really not that much for a man. It's round about the average for men over 45. I hover round there myself and have never been on any plane where I am anywhere even close to needing an extender.

Epidote · 31/03/2025 13:49

They have extensions if they don't fit. Like the ones you use for babies. Don't worry about it.

OllysArmyRidesAgain · 31/03/2025 13:52

When I was a size 16 I never needed an extender, my weight did go up and after a couple of flights where i forced myself into the seatbelt I learnt from my seat neighbour that extenders were readily available and it changed my flying experience.

I have never had the request shouted down the plane, and I stopped being embarrassed about needing it quite quickly. Usually I ask as I get on and then if I am not handed it there and then I remind the cabin crew as they walk up and down closing the bins and checking you are sitting properly.

I am slimming down again now so now I go to my seat first to see if the belt fits, it is worth pointing out that not all seat belts are the same length, not even on the same plane, there have been instances when my seat had a shorter belt than my travelling partner and the easiest solution was to swap seats.

Aah bless you. You’ll be fine. The seatbelts can be quite baggy so you’ll probs have to tighten across your lap. Enjoy your trip xx

Really?? I assume you're teeny tiny then and only smell food and never eat it? Nothing wrong with being a size 16.

Op the belts will fit fine.

soupyspoon · 31/03/2025 14:01

Elsvieta · 31/03/2025 12:37

No, I distinctly remember reading it. And wasn't surprised by it either. Anyone who has spent any time listening to the very obese talking about their experiences has heard a lot of similar stuff. A lot of people treat fat people like crap. And when other people tell them that stuff that has happened to them doesn't happen, that makes it even worse.

I dont say it was unlikely you read about it, I say its unlikely it happened. I have spent over 40 years morbidly obese before losing all my weight, my experiences of being treated differently due to my weight were around visiting the GP because everything is put down to weight. I dont buy into the narrative that seems common now that fat people are treated badly and somehow discriminated against, I think that is wanting to portray yourself as some sort of victim.

OP says she has a 40 inch waist. That's pretty large and not an average size.

Wintersgirl · 31/03/2025 14:11

Idontjetwashthefucker · 31/03/2025 10:15

And you can buy extenders on Amazon, just make sure they are compliant

This won't be allowed by the Airline....

blcakgaragedoor · 31/03/2025 14:13

I’m a 20/22 and Ryanair seatbelts fit fine.

It's not that large if you take men into account, and the seatbelts obviously do.

No problem at all. I have been bigger and fitted fine.

Yeah, it's about average for men in their mid 40s-50s in the UK, and it increases with age.

Dueanamechange2025 · 31/03/2025 14:30

At size 16 you should be fine, I was around a 22 last year and the belt fit in one seat but not another on a Ryan Air flight, so random! Never had any issues on any other flights. No one battered an eye lid though when I asked for an extender. No bellowing and no fuse.
