@ThisVividGreenEagle I thought the belts were more ‘lap’ belts so they don’t actually fit around one’s waist. Have a great holiday!

thank you ive never flown before so assumed they was all the way around lol

The belt only has to fit over the front of you, not all the way round. Have you been on a plane before?!

no i havent
this is my first time flying thanks

If the belt is 30 and your waist is over 30 I wouldn’t risk it to be honest. Ask another airline and see if their planes can fit you

ask another airline???? fit me??? im not fucking eating the plane im asking if ill need an extender im not massive so asking another airline isnt nesscery

You will be absolutely and utterly fine. The belts go across your lap so it really does depend on where you carry your weight. I've seen apple shaped women with slimmer legs tuck the belt under their tummy and I've seen thicker people struggle more. I've travelled ryanair sized 22-24 and not had an issue. One one occasion I recall the belt did up - just - and I asked for an extender, just to be comfier. This is dealt with discretely and these days is absolutely not news on any airline.

Jesus you cannot be serious 😂

vickylou78 · 01/04/2025 07:10

The belt only goes over your lap, like the bottom part of a car seat belt - it doesn't need to go all round your waist

vickylou78 · 01/04/2025 07:11

Size 16 is completely average and you'd be fine on any plane seat!

independentfriend · 01/04/2025 18:53

May help to reframe this with some care / compassion for your body. The issue is planes are made with seats that work best for bigger kids and straight sized adults. They're not comfortable for a whole range of small - medium fat people but probably tolerable. Some medium fat and most large fat people will need a seatbelt extender. Some large fat and most people in bodies bigger than that will need two seats. The fundamental error is in aircraft design that wants to squish as many people as possible into the plane to maximise profits. Our bodies aren't the problem.

Seatbelts on planes do get shortened sometimes as when they're damaged the damaged bit can be cut off and the buckle refitted so if you do find yourself with a seatbelt that doesn't fit, that's likely to be why, because at your size it should fit fine.

I'm bigger than that and no problem so you'll be fine.

SuperBlondie28 · 01/04/2025 20:37

They fit my hubby. He's rather broad shouldered so naturally wide with a bit of chubby belly. Although he swears it's muscle 😂

Floatlikeafeather2 · 31/03/2025 10:11

Are you sure you've got your waist measurement right? If you have, how are you a size 14?

That’s what menopause does to you.

ThistleTits · 01/04/2025 22:26

@ThisVividGreenEagle just returned on a Ryanair flight yesterday. Both flights the seat belt fitted me. Size 20. Please do not stress over this. It will fit you with no issue.

Woofie7 · 01/04/2025 23:05

Now this post is very interesting . I flew Ryan air yesterday in one of their new planes. Norwich to faro .
I was amazed how small the belt was . I’m a 14/16 31 waist and I was at the end of my belt . Never happened before. My husband is a 38 inch tummy but v slim hips he had it over his hips and it just reached. Never ever have I experienced this before and I’ve lost a stone . But I rarely fly Ryan air .

The seat belt onky goes over the front of you, not all the way around. So technically if seat belt is 30" in total across front of you, it could accommodate a 60" waist.

i am in the progress of loosing weight have lost half a stone 🤗so well done to you its never the easiest!
some people have said that some times parts of the seatbelt gets cut out and shrins the seatbelt instead of it being replaced comepletly x

Daftypants · 02/04/2025 09:22

You’ll be fine My daughter is a size 16 and there was easily enough seatbelt to go across her and spare .
My husband is over 6’2” and a 38 waist , again easily enough .
I am small , size 10 , waist size varies as I have IBS 🤪and have to pull it across tight even when I’m having a massive stomach day .
thats on various airlines

SunnySideDeepDown · 02/04/2025 09:23

Bogginsthe3rd · 31/03/2025 10:12

That does seem a bit risky at your size/ circumference. Can you not just ask for a belt extender on the plane if needed though ? When is the flight ? Could you slim down before a bit to be safe (if it's a summer holiday)?

Slim down to fit in a seatbelt?! Ah yes, just slim down, why hadn’t she thought of that before! 🙄

maw1681 · 02/04/2025 09:24

I wouldn’t worry, I flew with my size 20 friend recently and she didn’t need an extender - I’m a 14 bottom and nowhere near needing an extender

SunnySideDeepDown · 02/04/2025 09:25

See it this way OP - if it didn’t fit a size 16, half of the passengers, maybe more would need extenders!

Randomsabreur · 02/04/2025 09:35

You should be fine for most seats but note that the seat belts get trimmed and resealed if they fray so if it's brand new it will have a lot more space than one that is nearly at the 'end' of its life.

I once took 2 flights 8 hours apart (joys of overnight connection in Stansted), I'm a UK14 and on one I had like 2 inches spare and on the other I had a good 6-10 inches on the tail. Think it was even the "same" seat number (different actual planes) as I usually go for the nearest free window seat to the back of the plane (nicer stairs - rather than the built in steep "ladder") that isn't the back 4 rows (might get bumped on an equipment change if new plane lacks these rows)!

She said she was a size 16 I’m certain?
OP might be a different shaped 16 where a 16 generally fits all over but buys different styles

koolkatdad · 02/04/2025 11:52

ThisVividGreenEagle · 31/03/2025 13:32

thank you so much! and how did your drop some of your weight if you dont mind me asking x?

Fairly simply: Eat Less, walk more. I've been monitoring my caloric intake and keeping it to ~1700 to ~1900 a day and going on mile longs walks a day after lunch. Dropped my BP into the "healthy but monitor range" (117/75), it was ever so slightly elevated 125/83 and have gone from 105 kg to ~88 kg currently ~86 kg minimum. I'm not too strict with eating, just have eliminated snacks and do have "splurge days" on occasion for big events etc. just limit my normal day to day to between 1700 and 1800 as a goal.
