At size 16 i don't think you need to worry, I flew at size 22 on Ryanair, Jet2 and Qatar with no issues

Balloonhearts · 31/03/2025 10:10

You'll be fine. I flew at a size 20 and their seatbelt fit.

SleepyHollowed84 · 31/03/2025 10:11

You’ll be fine but they have extenders onboard if it doesn’t fit. You shouldn’t be worried.

do you think they would kick you off the plane?!

Floatlikeafeather2 · 31/03/2025 10:11

Are you sure you've got your waist measurement right? If you have, how are you a size 14?

Bogginsthe3rd · 31/03/2025 10:12

That does seem a bit risky at your size/ circumference. Can you not just ask for a belt extender on the plane if needed though ? When is the flight ? Could you slim down before a bit to be safe (if it's a summer holiday)?

nomas · 31/03/2025 10:13

I think you’ll be fine without an extension. Is it that you don’t want to wear an extension?

16

Winter2020 · 31/03/2025 10:15

30 inches won't be the total waist circumference. My son has around a 30 inch waist and he is an underweight 15 year old. If the seat belt were 30inches around most people on the plane wouldn't fit.

You will be fine.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 31/03/2025 10:15

And you can buy extenders on Amazon, just make sure they are compliant

BMW6 · 31/03/2025 10:18

OP if your waist is 40" then you are size 22 not 16.

Size 16 would be 34" waist.

A size 16 is nothing

But yes to othe rposters about waist size, mine is 34 inches, although a nurse measured at 31 which I think is wrong but my trousers are size 10s.

In reality someone with my waist measurement is about a size 16 really but clothing sizes are unreliable.

SoSoLong · 31/03/2025 10:21

The belt doesn't go all around your waist though so of course it will fit.

soupyspoon · 31/03/2025 10:22

They often wont let you use these, dont waste your money, its fine just to ask staff for an extender, its common place

But OP wont need it anyway she isnt massive

mysecretshame · 31/03/2025 10:25

The back of the seat is not included in the measurement.
I'm a 14 and fit easily in my big coat!

notimagain · 31/03/2025 10:28

@soupyspoon

Agree, some airlines ban BYO extenders.

The BYO ones may be compliant when supplied but they aren’t subject to the same routine engineering checks the in-house airline ones are supposed to be subject to.

Idontjetwashthefucker · 31/03/2025 10:31

Apologies, didn't realise re the extenders. Doesn't sound like OP will need one anyway

Elsvieta · 31/03/2025 10:33

She's probably more worried about someone bellowing WE NEED AN EXTENSION FOR THIS PASSENGER the length of the plane. Which would be embarrassing.

OP, size 16 is now the average size of a UK woman. I am a 16 and have flown lots with Easyjet, Ryanair etc with no problems with the belt (lots of belt left over). And think about what the average waist size of a male passenger must be...

Thing is, though, 40 inches isn't a 16 (are you sure you're thinking of your waist measurement, not your hips?). If that really is your waist, you need to know about the experiences of a size 22.

I've got an idea it's possible to buy your own extender and take it on with you. Although whether it's compatible with all planes / belts, who knows.

If you are actually wearing size 16 trousers / skirts and they fit, you are definitely not going to have a problem.

Teenagerantruns · 31/03/2025 10:34

I'm a size 22, fly tyan air no problem.

MyKingdomForACat · 31/03/2025 10:34

16 is the average UK dress size. The OP is talking like she’s 40 stone or something! You’ll be fine x

Yes, god forbid we get people to take some responsibility for their weight 🧐

No one would bellow that. Cabin crew are experienced professionals who wouldn’t shame a passenger for needing an extender. It’s not a big deal.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 31/03/2025 10:42

You should be fine, I've flown as a size 22 with Ryanair and chose to use one as although the belt JUST did up, it was v tight and dug in but a 16 should be fine.

Even if you did need one, no one gives a shit, when you get on you can say "I'm in seat XX, can I grab an extender" and they'll hand you one or just grab someone as they walk past. No one yells it down the cabin, its all quite simple and honestly, no one gives a shit, they're all too worried about getting themselves sorted in their seats.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 31/03/2025 10:43

And PLEASE don't buy one off amazon, there is no safety checks done nor standards they need to meet, many airlines now won't allow you to use them anyway but if they did, no one cn guarantee they are actually safe and everyone deserves to be safe regardless of their size

UK Size 16?

BTW The seatbelt only needs to go from one side to the other, not all the way round the full circumference of your waist!
