To veto DH’s baby name choice?

Bit of a long one, sorry! Currently 32 weeks pregnant with twins (one boy, one girl) and DH has suddenly decided he must name them after his favourite romantic film couple. He thinks it’s cute and meaningful. I think it’s twee and naff.

For context, the film isn’t some timeless classic, more of a 90s/00s romcom. Not awful, but not exactly Shakespeare either. Think along the lines of Jack and Rose (it’s not that, but you get the vibe). The names are VERY tied to the film – like, you’d hear them together and immediately think of it.

I’ve said I’m not keen, but DH is really pushing it, saying I got more say on DD1’s name (not true, we both agreed!). He also reckons no one will make the connection, which is just nonsense because even my mum raised an eyebrow when we mentioned it!

AIBU to put my foot down? I want names that will grow with them, not make people say “oh, like that film?” every time they introduce themselves. DH is sulking and says I’m ruining something sentimental for him. WWYD?

Extra context:
• Not my PFB, we already have a 4yo DD
• Names are nice individually, just cringey together
• DH is lovely but can be a bit of a dreamer when it comes to this stuff

Both patents have to agree on the names. Back to the drawing board.

PiastriThePastry · 26/03/2025 14:49

Oh how completely ridiculous. It would be bad enough to name them after any recognisable film duo but a romantic couple?! No.

PaintYourAssLikeRembrandt · 26/03/2025 14:49

Your dh wants to name his children after a couple? That's bloody weird. People will always think about the romantic couple when hearing your twins names.

CryptoFascist · 26/03/2025 14:50

Remind him they are siblings and not a couple.
Back to the drawing board!

Pumpkincozynights · 26/03/2025 14:50

Tell him no.

DontBuyANewMumCashmere · 26/03/2025 14:50

I would absolutely veto them together but let him choose one of the two names.

Does he see that it's cringey and inappropriate to name brother and sister after the names of famous lovers?!

MyrtleLion · 26/03/2025 14:52

Harry and Sally? Not a chance.

WoodyOwl · 26/03/2025 14:52

I think couple ideas should be saved for Halloween costume ideas, not siblings.

lechatnoir · 26/03/2025 14:53

Bet it's Harry & Sally - ridiculous idea for twins. They're siblings not lovers ffs

TheLovleyChebbyMcGee · 26/03/2025 14:53

absolutely no, that's bizarre he would suggest them tbh. Is he taking the piss?

BelloItalia · 26/03/2025 14:53

Please let it be Ross and Rachel

HolidayHattie · 26/03/2025 14:54

My first thought was also Harry & Sally.

Stick to your guns, OP.

Exactly!! I could maybe get on board if it were just one of the names, but the full set together? It’s giving “super fan” and not in a good way. I don’t want people side-eyeing us at the school gates thinking we planned it as some sort of tribute to a 90s romcom.

DH keeps saying he wouldn’t make the connection if he met kids with these names. I call BS because everyone our age knows this film. Even my MIL, who barely watches anything, immediately went “Oh, like Film Name?” when we mentioned it.

I told him last night that I just don’t want to spend the next 18 years explaining our weirdly themed baby names to every new teacher, doctor, or parent we meet. He’s now sulking and saying I’ve “killed the magic.”

Like, mate, the real magic is keeping two newborns alive on zero sleep – not naming them after some Hollywood love story!

BelloItalia · 26/03/2025 14:54

Oh just realised it’s a film

LlynTegid · 26/03/2025 14:57

I am with you on this one, OP. Agreed is the word here. I'd also think about how others might react, no-one should set up a child for a lifetime of jokes about their name or having to correct spelling of it.

Gundogday · 26/03/2025 14:58

Definitely veto!

Can you mention the names to see quickly we can get the film?

Rhett and Scarlett

Hibernatingtilspring · 26/03/2025 14:59

As a twin (boy and girl) I have TOO MANY creepy childhood memories where adults treated us as though we were a couple. Looking back it's so weird! Classic one was making us be Mary and Joseph in the school Nativity, linking our names together, talking about how we didn't need anyone else etc... Just so weird!

Don't let your husband do this, they need to be people in their own right, and associating them with a romantic couple is just creepy AF.

CaramelVanilla · 26/03/2025 14:59

Naming siblings after Romantic film characters..... EW

Idontjetwashthefucker · 26/03/2025 15:01

Weird to name them after a romantic couple, maybe reiterate to him that the couple were LOVERS, that should surely change his mind

KnickerFolder · 26/03/2025 15:02

🙄 They are individual babies not a pair of puppies.

That said, it is quite nice to have a story behind your name, as long as you don’t have to share the story with everyone. Could you use the names as middle names or one first name and one middle name or a different form of the names, as you say you like the names individually?

eg if it were Harry and Sally
Harry James and Isabella Sally
Henry and Sally
Harry and Sarah (Sally comes from Sarah)

Chuchoter · 26/03/2025 15:02

How utterly childish of him.

These are human children not kittens.

I hope he isn't immature in any other ways.

I'd be so embarrassed if he told other people this in front of me.

Smallmercies · 26/03/2025 15:04

Tell him it's Punch and Judy or nothing.

Reallyoldperson · 26/03/2025 15:04

Romeo and Juliet, Bonnie and Clyde ?

AmateurNoun · 26/03/2025 15:04

Kate and Leopold?

Whatever it is, it's very wrong to name your children after a romantic couple. YANBU

Reallyoldperson · 26/03/2025 15:04

Romeo and Juliet, Bonnie and Clyde ?

Rosie and Jim? Harry and Sally?
