To veto DH’s baby name choice?

Bit of a long one, sorry! Currently 32 weeks pregnant with twins (one boy, one girl) and DH has suddenly decided he must name them after his favourite romantic film couple. He thinks it’s cute and meaningful. I think it’s twee and naff.

For context, the film isn’t some timeless classic, more of a 90s/00s romcom. Not awful, but not exactly Shakespeare either. Think along the lines of Jack and Rose (it’s not that, but you get the vibe). The names are VERY tied to the film – like, you’d hear them together and immediately think of it.

I’ve said I’m not keen, but DH is really pushing it, saying I got more say on DD1’s name (not true, we both agreed!). He also reckons no one will make the connection, which is just nonsense because even my mum raised an eyebrow when we mentioned it!

AIBU to put my foot down? I want names that will grow with them, not make people say “oh, like that film?” every time they introduce themselves. DH is sulking and says I’m ruining something sentimental for him. WWYD?

Extra context:
• Not my PFB, we already have a 4yo DD
• Names are nice individually, just cringey together
• DH is lovely but can be a bit of a dreamer when it comes to this stuff

I wouldn't do this. They're a very famous couple and I can just picture exactly which scene people will reference when teasing them when they get a bit older.

Just wanted to say I slightly hoped it was Riley and Terry (action not romcom, and one of my favourites from that time, although I don't think the character whose first name is Riley actually reveals that until right at the end).

Why don’t you just tell us the names!!

She did. Yesterday afternoon. And loads of posters have commented on them since.

I knew two cat brothers called Ronnie and Reggie. Can’t say I liked it or thought it was funny 🤷‍♀️

I know of a Ronnie & Reggie twin locally.

For those not old enough... Well known east end murderous gangsters in the 1960s

A friend of mine at primary school named her rabbits Bonnie and Clyde. We were about 10, I can only guess that one of her parents or another adult suggested it. I’d never heard of Bonnie and Clyde till then.

Blows my mind that people seem to think naming children is some kind of joke, or a chance to be quirky. Absolutely not. Tell him to get 2 fish and give the names to them. Is he ok?

Read the OP's posts. She did. Yesterday.

It's really odd how people comment on threads without even reading the OP's posts. It seems to happen a lot. Do people really just read the first post on a thread and then decide that must be all there is to the discussion? Saying "why don't you tell us the names" is strange: how would you know whether she had or hadn't if you have not read her posts?

Alltheyearround · 27/03/2025 20:07

Steer away from RomComs, but other pairs of names could be put forward.

Jack and Jill
Laurel and Hardy..
Cannon and Ball.
Morcambe and Wise.

The possibilities are endless...

Please come back and tell us what you chose in the end!

Not strictly true, calling Donald Trump a cunt is fine 😉

Its too good a word to use to describe him. I'd say he was more of a dick tbh.

Not sure how censored Mumsnet is with text, Facebook would have me shot 😐

Don't be silly, you can say the word sexual on Facebook

Kitkatcatflap · 27/03/2025 23:25

I was hoping for Alladin and Jasmine
