To veto DH’s baby name choice?

Bit of a long one, sorry! Currently 32 weeks pregnant with twins (one boy, one girl) and DH has suddenly decided he must name them after his favourite romantic film couple. He thinks it’s cute and meaningful. I think it’s twee and naff.

For context, the film isn’t some timeless classic, more of a 90s/00s romcom. Not awful, but not exactly Shakespeare either. Think along the lines of Jack and Rose (it’s not that, but you get the vibe). The names are VERY tied to the film – like, you’d hear them together and immediately think of it.

I’ve said I’m not keen, but DH is really pushing it, saying I got more say on DD1’s name (not true, we both agreed!). He also reckons no one will make the connection, which is just nonsense because even my mum raised an eyebrow when we mentioned it!

AIBU to put my foot down? I want names that will grow with them, not make people say “oh, like that film?” every time they introduce themselves. DH is sulking and says I’m ruining something sentimental for him. WWYD?

Extra context:
• Not my PFB, we already have a 4yo DD
• Names are nice individually, just cringey together
• DH is lovely but can be a bit of a dreamer when it comes to this stuff

Harry and Sally ?
Edward and Vivien ?
Danny and Sandy ? ( probably too early )

Seriously , no couples names for siblings !

HeyThereDelila · 26/03/2025 15:06

No, weird if they’re siblings to name them after a romantic couple (wtf?)

You both have to firmly agree on names - if either of you doesn’t like it then it goes off the list.

UndermyShoeJoe · 26/03/2025 15:06

He wants them to have names where people will think of them as from a romantic couple.

He needs to really digest that. He wants his children to be Harley Quinn and the joker does he? People won’t think aww cute they will go eww that’s a bit weird. Incest vibes…

Namesy · 26/03/2025 15:07

I think it would be weird to name siblings after a famous couple. You’re carrying the babies so I think you should choose as long as your DH doesn’t hate the names.

Easterbunnygettingsorted · 26/03/2025 15:07

Suggest Ant (onia) and Declan.. See if he is as keen on matching names then.

Devilsmommy · 26/03/2025 15:08

Is it jack and rose? Tell him it's creepy as fuck to name siblings after lovers🤢

Smallmercies · 26/03/2025 15:08

Shirley and Costas? Johnny and Baby?

Chuchoter · 26/03/2025 15:09

Tarzan and Jane sounds nice.

Naunet · 26/03/2025 15:11

Fuck no! You're the one creating and birthing these children, and presumably they're already getting his last name, so no, he doesnt get to dictate both the first names, especially when its just based on a bloody film.

AmateurNoun · 26/03/2025 15:12

Bennie and Joon?

YeGodsandLittleFishies · 26/03/2025 15:13

I have twins. It’s a really good idea to treat them as individuals right from the beginning.

They aren’t a “set”, but other people will treat them that way if you do.

We avoided lots of twin nonsense by not ever even referring to them as “the twins”.

Their relationship as twins is important to them, but shouldn’t be important to other people. They are individuals first and foremost.

When naming twins it’s also a good idea to avoid alliteration (Topsy and Tim) and rhyming (Andy and Mandy)

Each parent should get absolute veto. You have to agree.

Chuchoter · 26/03/2025 15:13

Bella and Edwards. Massive cringe.

Crunchymum · 26/03/2025 15:14

Was just going to say Bella and Edward!

Both lovely names but yep not together.

Mansionscoldandgrey · 26/03/2025 15:16

Charles and Duckface?

PiastriThePastry · 26/03/2025 15:18

Do not doubt your decision op, save your children from this wretched fate! I’m dying a bit at the ‘killed the magic’ line, sorry for laughing 😅 if it’s Bella and Edward, well, all i have to say is; 🐀

UndermyShoeJoe · 26/03/2025 15:19

Oh god Bella and Edward haha

A old neighbour gave all their children tv show names she’s very odd.

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 26/03/2025 15:19

You're growing twins in your body, why on earth would you not have a right of veto over their names? Tell your husband to get back in his box. And make sure you personally book and attend the registration appointment.

JazbayGrapes · 26/03/2025 15:19

Naming siblings after literal lovers is weird AF. Pets yeah, but not kids

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 26/03/2025 15:20

PS - it's Harry and Sally, isn't it?

SuperMarioSuperMario · 26/03/2025 15:23

Vivienne and Edward?

But yeah, no mate 😆 It's fine to be a sentimental bloke, but this needs channeling elsewhere more appropriate, can you get him a couple of gerbils or something?!

xILikeJamx · 26/03/2025 15:23

Everyone's so clearly wrong - the twins will be called Beauty and Beast.

Personally I think it's really cute

DefiniteGrouse · 26/03/2025 15:23

I wasn’t going to say the names, but since everyone’s guessing, they’re Harry and Sally.

Livelaughlurgy · 26/03/2025 15:24

Bahahahaha DH suggested Edward for a boy and I had to veto because I wanted Isobel for a girl and couldn't live in a world where I might have Bella and Edward as my children.

Agapornis · 26/03/2025 15:25

I think Harry has already met Sally 😅

They should obviously never shag so no, romantic couple names are out.

Thomson and Thompson?

xILikeJamx · 26/03/2025 15:26

DefiniteGrouse · 26/03/2025 15:23

I wasn’t going to say the names, but since everyone’s guessing, they’re Harry and Sally.

Go back and suggest Sarah Connor and Terminator
