To veto DH’s baby name choice?

Bit of a long one, sorry! Currently 32 weeks pregnant with twins (one boy, one girl) and DH has suddenly decided he must name them after his favourite romantic film couple. He thinks it’s cute and meaningful. I think it’s twee and naff.

For context, the film isn’t some timeless classic, more of a 90s/00s romcom. Not awful, but not exactly Shakespeare either. Think along the lines of Jack and Rose (it’s not that, but you get the vibe). The names are VERY tied to the film – like, you’d hear them together and immediately think of it.

I’ve said I’m not keen, but DH is really pushing it, saying I got more say on DD1’s name (not true, we both agreed!). He also reckons no one will make the connection, which is just nonsense because even my mum raised an eyebrow when we mentioned it!

AIBU to put my foot down? I want names that will grow with them, not make people say “oh, like that film?” every time they introduce themselves. DH is sulking and says I’m ruining something sentimental for him. WWYD?

Extra context:
• Not my PFB, we already have a 4yo DD
• Names are nice individually, just cringey together
• DH is lovely but can be a bit of a dreamer when it comes to this stuff

The film is from 1989 btw (pedant)

Yiayoula · 26/03/2025 15:26

@DefiniteGrouse - thanks for confirming!

Hard no to Harry and Sally .

DappledThings · 26/03/2025 15:27

Harry and Sally are traditionally short for Henry and Sarah. How about using those, or a combination like Henry and Sally so it can still be a tribute in his mind but not as painfully obvious. Henry and Sara if you want to go one step further away.

Whoarethoseguys · 26/03/2025 15:27

Are the names Harry and Sally?
Whatevers they are I agree that naming them after a romcom couple is not a good idea and it's not cute.
Apart from anything else they are brother and sister not a romantic couple!
But also they will be individuals and their names should reflect that.

ScrubMummy · 26/03/2025 15:28

Really sorry, OP, but I’m laughing my head off at some of these!

I’m not a film watcher, but even I’m alarmed at your DHs thinking! Poor twins, it must be tough enough as it is, always being lumped together - without comedy names from your own Dad? and just “wow” at the school who made twins be Mary and Joseph!😱

Surely not Danny and Sandy?
Surely not Harry and Sally?

And 😆 at Rosie and Jim!!

…..it’s Harry and Sally isn’t it?

Carodebalo · 26/03/2025 15:29

This is either a windup or your husband is completely nuts (and I’m truly sorry to say that). Please show him this thread, or not, but please tell him NO! EVERYONE will know.

westcott · 26/03/2025 15:29

He can’t possibly think this is a good idea.

SillySeal · 26/03/2025 15:29

I think 90% of people i know would know that movie and think of it hearing those names together. It's an iconic movie not just a random one.

ginasevern · 26/03/2025 15:29

Why is he so attached to this film anyway, I mean to the extent that he'd name his children after it? That's some disturbing fandom right there. Anyway apart from the unforgiveable naffness, the sexual connotations will be the butt of jokes and raised eyebrows forever more. Please don't do this to your children OP.

mathanxiety · 26/03/2025 15:29

Harry and Sally!!

Absolutely not. Poor Sally would get very tired very quickly of the "I'll have what she's having" remarks.

What is wrong with your husband FFS.

Velvian · 26/03/2025 15:29

Oh no Harry and Sally is really bad. 😂As you say both nice names, but not together. If he was the one pregnant, I would blame hormones, but he has no excuse.

ScrubMummy · 26/03/2025 15:29

Edit… sorry, crossed post OP

InigoJollifant · 26/03/2025 15:30

I have never seen it but even I know that Harry and Sally have a famous orgasm scene?! Mortifying for siblings!!

iseenyouwithkefir · 26/03/2025 15:31

I think you should each give the other's suggested names a fair hearing, and then each feel free to veto anything you don't want without the other constantly nagging and niggling about it. There are some circumstances where I would not want to say no right away, and might consider the name for a bit to see if I could grow to like it, or come up with a variant or use it as a middle - but those are much more serious/personal circs, like someone wanting to use a family name or a name they've loved since childhood, or perhaps wanting to honour someone important to them who has died.

He’s now sulking and saying I’ve “killed the magic.” About Harry and Sally, really? Are you sure he's not winding you up?

Easterbunnygettingsorted · 26/03/2025 15:07

Suggest Ant (onia) and Declan.. See if he is as keen on matching names then.

I knew a pair of boys called Anthony and Declan before they became famous! Anthony changed his name eventually.

Naming them after a romantic couple is ridiculous. Clearly he needs a more up to date twin reference - how about Jaime and Cersei?

Shetlands · 26/03/2025 15:32

NONONONONONONO!

Your twins will thank you later.

madaffodil · 26/03/2025 15:32

There is ONLY ONE scene in that film that everyone immediately remembers.

Cute and meaningful it ain't. 😁

GofE · 26/03/2025 15:32

Oh no; when old enough/ teens, they may see the movie, and be very grossed out at the s*xual connotations... I couldn't imagine growing up with my brother and I being named after an infamous 'couple'.

Bolide · 26/03/2025 15:33

cannot believe you found a bloke who watches romcoms😅

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 26/03/2025 15:33

DefiniteGrouse · 26/03/2025 15:23

I wasn’t going to say the names, but since everyone’s guessing, they’re Harry and Sally.

Oh goodness no, you cannot do that to your children. They are human beings, not toys. What is he thinking?

Great names individually though, so maybe use one and come up with a different one for the other twin.

garibaldiscake · 26/03/2025 15:33

I know siblings called Leah and Luke.

kiwiblue · 26/03/2025 15:34

garibaldiscake · 26/03/2025 15:33

I know siblings called Leah and Luke.

Do you mean Leia?

Ponoka7 · 26/03/2025 15:35

I've got cats called, beast and belle, tell him in the future you'll get a pair of kittens. Children need to not be named after romantic film couples.

kiwiblue · 26/03/2025 15:35

DappledThings · 26/03/2025 15:27

Decent suggestion!

Chuchoter · 26/03/2025 15:35

I actually thought it couldn't possibly be Harry and Sally as no one else pile be that NAFF!

That's truly awful.

I'd rather have Chucky and Tiffany.
