To veto DH’s baby name choice?

Bit of a long one, sorry! Currently 32 weeks pregnant with twins (one boy, one girl) and DH has suddenly decided he must name them after his favourite romantic film couple. He thinks it’s cute and meaningful. I think it’s twee and naff.

For context, the film isn’t some timeless classic, more of a 90s/00s romcom. Not awful, but not exactly Shakespeare either. Think along the lines of Jack and Rose (it’s not that, but you get the vibe). The names are VERY tied to the film – like, you’d hear them together and immediately think of it.

I’ve said I’m not keen, but DH is really pushing it, saying I got more say on DD1’s name (not true, we both agreed!). He also reckons no one will make the connection, which is just nonsense because even my mum raised an eyebrow when we mentioned it!

AIBU to put my foot down? I want names that will grow with them, not make people say “oh, like that film?” every time they introduce themselves. DH is sulking and says I’m ruining something sentimental for him. WWYD?

Extra context:
• Not my PFB, we already have a 4yo DD
• Names are nice individually, just cringey together
• DH is lovely but can be a bit of a dreamer when it comes to this stuff

He needs to be told firmly that:

  • Children are not billboards for your fandoms
  • Twins are not one entity but two individuals
  • Naming children is something which requires unanimous agreement from both parents

Harry and Sally - awful idea (and I say that as someone who loves the film). Not only will everyone associate the names with the film, but they'll associate them with "that scene". Which considering they're siblings is basically weird.

Is this thread actually serious?

Jubaju · 26/03/2025 16:10

A baby hasn’t been named sally since about 1985 😁
i think he’s punking you… surely 😐

thankyounextplease · 26/03/2025 16:10

Worked with a guy who called his kids Rosie and Jim.

Whenever anyone started singing the theme tune, he'd snap, "No, it's JIM and ROSIE"

😂

CactusSammy · 26/03/2025 16:10

If it's Morticia and Gomez, I really think you have to let him go for it tbh.

Catandsquirrel · 26/03/2025 16:11

Henry and Sally could work but it's a bit naff, naming your children after a blockbuster film. Looks as though a huge committee does all of your thinking for you.

DefiniteGrouse · 26/03/2025 15:23

I wasn’t going to say the names, but since everyone’s guessing, they’re Harry and Sally.

Let him have one of the names maybe?

BubbaHorovitz · 26/03/2025 16:11

If he loves that film so much, why not just call them Billy & Meg no one will then be making fun of them, because it's one remove.

Chungai · 26/03/2025 16:12

Sally is short for Sarah, what about Henry and Sarah...?

Sparsely · 26/03/2025 16:12

On average a woman called Sally is about 60, so you risk giving the poor girl a granny's name (a great granny's name would be cool though)

eqpi4t2hbsnktd · 26/03/2025 16:13

Edward Scissorhands & Kim

My good god. How can you even look at him? He is so stupid. That is such an iconic pairing of movie characters. And immediately brings to mind the orgasm scene. And he wants to name newborn siblings after them?

That is fucked.

So not just a very famous couple but the can men and women ever just be friends couple???? Way too creepy.
'Here are our kids, Harry and Sally. Yes we did name them after characters who fucked. Why are you backing away from me?'.

Haveyouanyjam · 26/03/2025 16:16

Do you think he’s just on a wind up to see how far he can get with it?

Surely that is the only reasonable explanation…

Pemba · 26/03/2025 16:17

I like the name Sally! It's retro chic. I also quite like Harry. But I like them individually, you cannot have twins Harry and Sally (or any brother and sister really). Because the film is so well remembered and everybody will think of THAT scene! It's just not appropriate.

Tell huk

MarmaladeBagel · 26/03/2025 16:17

Bit grim to want a brother and sister named after romantic lovers, I'd just point that out and it would be the end of conversation.

Pemba · 26/03/2025 16:17

Posted too soon..

Tell him to go

Pemba · 26/03/2025 16:21

Back to the drawing board!

Pick the one he likes best and choose another name in the same vein, eg Harry and Emma, Harry and Lucy, or Thomas, Edward or William and Sally.

(don't tell him to go though... Unless he's REALLY stubborn about it)

Oh. Dear. God.

Nope. No. Under no circumstances. Not a chance.

SpringIsSpringing25 · 26/03/2025 16:22

@DefiniteGrouse

please tell us this was just a joke thread!!

I can't think any man would think that naming his twins after a romantic couple was a good idea. It's just gross.

Thisisittheapocalypse · 26/03/2025 16:23

I would die on the 'no' hill.

IOweMySanityToBasilParsley · 26/03/2025 16:26

I was hoping it was Bill and Ted 🤷🏻‍♀️
Harry and Sally is 🤮

Beaumon · 26/03/2025 16:26

Counteroffer with Thelma and Louis?

TheBewleySisters · 26/03/2025 16:28

Maybe if the Harry and Sally in the film were brother and sister - but even then it's a bit twee - but they were A ROMANTIC COUPLE!!!

outerspacepotato · 26/03/2025 16:33

Cringe.

People should not cringe at your children's names. And to name them after a romantic couple, WTF.

Wait, Harry and Sally? Oh hell no.
