To veto DH’s baby name choice?

Bit of a long one, sorry! Currently 32 weeks pregnant with twins (one boy, one girl) and DH has suddenly decided he must name them after his favourite romantic film couple. He thinks it’s cute and meaningful. I think it’s twee and naff.

For context, the film isn’t some timeless classic, more of a 90s/00s romcom. Not awful, but not exactly Shakespeare either. Think along the lines of Jack and Rose (it’s not that, but you get the vibe). The names are VERY tied to the film – like, you’d hear them together and immediately think of it.

I’ve said I’m not keen, but DH is really pushing it, saying I got more say on DD1’s name (not true, we both agreed!). He also reckons no one will make the connection, which is just nonsense because even my mum raised an eyebrow when we mentioned it!

AIBU to put my foot down? I want names that will grow with them, not make people say “oh, like that film?” every time they introduce themselves. DH is sulking and says I’m ruining something sentimental for him. WWYD?

Extra context:
• Not my PFB, we already have a 4yo DD
• Names are nice individually, just cringey together
• DH is lovely but can be a bit of a dreamer when it comes to this stuff

I am sure I saw an ad recently where they are recreating that scene......I want to say mayonnaise. Is it current?

So THAT scene will be even more at the forefront of peoples minds given the birth is weeks away.

DefiniteGrouse · 26/03/2025 15:23

I wasn’t going to say the names, but since everyone’s guessing, they’re Harry and Sally.

He's insane.

Bennie and Joon?

I was thinking this too. Or Jack and Sarah (although I think that refers to a father and daughter iirc).

Davros · 26/03/2025 19:34

Rick and Ilsa 🥁

Not sure how censored Mumsnet is with text, Facebook would have me shot 😐

Mn is fine with sexual language. You can say cunt and it’s fine as long as you’re not calling someone it

It was the wife and the infant daughter, iirc

Not strictly true, calling Donald Trump a cunt is fine 😉

Sid and Nancy?

I actually know siblings called Sid and Nancy. I told DH (a few years ago now tbf) and he spat out his tea! Tho it’s more than possible that ppl wouldn’t know the connection (DH and I are OLD)

@DefiniteGrouse if your DH's fave romcom was While You Were Sleeping or You’ve Got Mail I think you would be fine (Lucy and Jack or Joe and Kathleen for reference – yes i had to look them up too, even tho I have seen both films multiple times).

The issue is that H and S are the title of the film. And actually it’s an iconic film that is still popular – 23yo DD is a big fan. I love it too and it’s still deffo watched (I think you are underestimating its impact actually). I told her about this and she laughed and said NO WAY.

I mean you would never call twins John and Yoko, or Romeo and Juliet, or Antony and Cleopatra, or Ross and Rachel (and they are not even the title).

Show him this thread ?

Dogs, cats, goldfish, OK. Children, nope.

Panterusblackish · 26/03/2025 20:10

You grew them, risking your health and wellbeing to do so.

You get the final say

Davros · 26/03/2025 19:34

Rick and Ilsa 🥁

hahah I also suggested this! Now that is my fave film. You could maybe get away with it (tho Rick is not a great name tbh) as I bet a lot of ppl would have no idea what Ingrid's character is called.

Barney16 · 26/03/2025 20:19

Nooooooo. Don't let him. It's bizarre.

Mydadsbirthday · 26/03/2025 20:50

Just show him this thread. You're completely in the right here

bringonyourwreckingball · 26/03/2025 22:07

That is my favorite film of all time and that would be beyond weird

hididdlyho · 26/03/2025 22:43

YANBU. Could a compromise be to name the boy Harry and the girl be a different first name, with the middle name Sally?

Eenameenadeeka · 26/03/2025 23:07

It'd be a no for me because it's really weird naming siblings after a couple, but we always had that either of us could disagree with a name for ANY reason, "I don't like it" being a good enough reason. The last 2 I thought would never find a name haha but we got there in the end

Lilyhatesjaz · 26/03/2025 23:45

I wonder if perhaps he hasn't actually seen the film in ages and has forgotten what it is about, maybe watching it again would be enough to put him off.

GiddyCrab · 27/03/2025 00:06

Naunet · 26/03/2025 15:11

Fuck no! You're the one creating and birthing these children, and presumably they're already getting his last name, so no, he doesnt get to dictate both the first names, especially when its just based on a bloody film.

This.
He needs to grow up. Ruining his bloody magic indeed.
The answer is NO. End.

FloreatE · 26/03/2025 18:57

I never normally say this, @DefiniteGrouse but I sort of think you should either show him this thread or suggest he tests it out anonymously for himself.

Never mind Jack and Rose; Fred and Rose would be preferable to this.

@FloreatE Why would Fred and Rose be more preferable? 🤔 It’d still be gross and it would be worse because they’d be named after murderers. Surely that’d be creepy? Unless you were being sarcastic?

IamtheDevilsAvocado · 27/03/2025 01:49

Catandsquirrel · 26/03/2025 16:07

Wtf Harry and Sally? That's weird. There was a faking orgasm scene. They were famously a romantic / sexual couple. What's he thinking? How mortify for the children.

I was hoping for Harold and Maude at least. Same issue but better film and names.

Harold & maude is a brilliant film!

Not sure I'd want the overtones of gerontotophilia 😂

I know of a Ronnie & Reggie twin locally.

For those not old enough... Well known east end murderous gangsters in the 1960s

MsBucket · 27/03/2025 02:17

@IamtheDevilsAvocado I know the Kray twins existed, but didn’t know their first names. My mind went straight to EastEnders. I’m pretty sure there was a Ronnie and a Reggie Mitchell.

Edit: I misremembered 😳. It was Ronnie and Roxy.

So do I but they’re Staffordshire bull terriers 😂

Haha I can totally see what Harold saw in Maude. My personal hope though for an untold sequel is that he gave Sunshine a call after he had grieved. She was quirky enough to understand him and help channel his theatrics.

I think it's in awful taste using Reggie and Ronnie Kray as namesakes even for pets. I would think so much less of someone for doing that.
