To think the average Londoner is better looking?

I’m from a town near Manchester. Often go to towns nearby and into Manchester. There are all sorts of people of course.

I am currently in London and I can’t get out of my head that the average person here is much more attractive than the average person outside of London. I can’t place why. Is it that people here have more dosh for skincare?😂

Sorry to say but even in the broker area of London not just zone 1.

Ritzybitzy · 16/03/2025 09:56

People in the south are less likely to be overweight, suffer underlying health conditions and are wealthier on average. This will impact appearance.

I'm from a small city in Scotland and live in london and understand what you mean. I notice and my children notice it with smoking when I take them back. Groups of folk standing outside before then go in

I think it's more about the concentration of the people in the non London places. Eg) one main shopping centre in a place will be where everyone goes. So

Whereas in London it's larger, more areas for people to go so you don't have the same , plus tourists etc mixed in... with my smoking example you don't have 20 people standing outside one shopping centre smoking making it a thing.

Might be wrong but I have observed similar

I'm also in Scotland and find the same. So much obesity, smoking and poor dress sense.

It must be the circles I move in but around the South East London corner I inhabit there's all sorts. No better looking or groomed than my home of origin in the East Midlands. Apart from (of course) the super rich in West London zone 1&2 who can afford expensive clothes, top-price hairdressing, personal trainers and beauty treatments on tap. The rest of us are just trying to get by in this expensive city like most people are in the UK now. That's my experience anyway.

FiveTreeHill · 16/03/2025 10:05

I mean London is full of people from all over the country and world, so I don't think that actually londoners look better. And tbh it's not something I've noticed

I think it's probably that
A) a lot of people are tourists, either there on holiday, for an event, a work thing and so these people will be putting more effort into their appearance
B) you get a higher proportion of rich people who have money to put into their appearance

I went out of London for a short break and there are a lot more chavvy people outside of London. Even the broke people of London didn’t look as bad as entire families looking how they looked.

The young girls dress too old. In London they tend to dress like they are going to play in the park and wear appropriate for the weather clothing, outside of London the small girls are wearing bodycon and adult clothes. It looks bizarre little breast buds popping out.

Outside of London people use too much fabric softener and it smells really strong. I think it is a class identifier to smell strongly of Lenor or Comfort.

The adult men wear football shirts for standard and have varying degrees of pot belly that they don’t try to hide.

The women have bad skin and bad dye job haircuts.

Classic . Are you David Attenborough?

Where is OP and exactly which part of London is she referring to? Chiswick? Harlesden? Hackney? The City?

Pluvia · 16/03/2025 10:07

Former Londoner here. If you're a tourist you're likely to be walking around in 'nice' touristy areas full of other tourists who, by definition, will be well-off enough to have come to London for a break and will probably have planned their outfits and be taking loads of selfies — so full make-up and hair because they're making memories and they don't want to look rubbish. Plus the Londoners you're seeing (particularly at the weekend) are the people who can afford to live in those affluent areas of central London. Many of them will be wealthy incomers from other parts of the world and wealthy people tend to look good because they have the time/ money and boost their wealth and the next generation's genetic inheritance by marrying very good-looking people.

Get on a bus out to Tower Hamlets or Lewisham, the kind of areas where ordinary Londoners live, and you'll see more people like those from your home town.

80smonster · 16/03/2025 10:10

What a kind compliment. Thank you. I think it’s the diversity of the gene pool, at least that’s always been my assumption.

DodoTired · 16/03/2025 10:11

Well if you walk around Kensington or Knightsbridge that will be true. I notice this when I go there for lunch or dinner after living in Shoreditch which has a very different vibe and style 😁

MJconfessions · 16/03/2025 09:52

To be honest I do think certain areas have a look - like women from Essex, Liverpool, Manchester have a certain look

Ooh, I live on the border of London/ Essex. I wonder what our local 'look' is.

Ginmonkeyagain · 16/03/2025 10:15

@Pluvia how rude - I'll have you know we Lewisham people are stunning! 😆

KIlliePieMyOhMy · 16/03/2025 10:18

I had to leave London as I was too, too beautiful. It's a curse.

Ginmonkeyagain · 16/03/2025 10:19

Actually the only time It has been mentioned to me I was in a small port town in the South of France. I was wearing a grass green kaftan style midi dress from &Other Stories and some gold metallic birkenstock sandals and the French guy we were talking to in a bar said "I dressed like a Londoner". I am not entirely sure it was a complement!

PrincessHoneysuckle · 16/03/2025 10:24

It might be because London would be the home for people in tv/media/modelling so it makes sense you get higher above average looking people?

pinkdelight · 16/03/2025 10:24

arcticpandas · 16/03/2025 09:52

I think people in all capitals tend to put more focus on their appearance. That goes for visitors going to the capitals as well. But no, I don't think Londoners are more beautiful than avarage, they are just styled. On the other hand if you go to Copenhagen (Denmark) or Stockholm (Sweden) you will see a lot of natural beautiful people.

For a certain sort of Nordic beauty sure, but again, there are many other types.

I live in London, so thanks! (I’m sure it was probably me you saw)

No, it was surely me? 😁

Lambington · 16/03/2025 09:22

Yanbu. It's the way Londoners hold themselves. Comfortable in their own skin.
They are also generally kinder and more tolerant than those in other parts of the country which comes out in their faces - a smile makes everone look more attractive than a frown.
People in the "regions" always seem to be scowling / complaining / blaming someone else. Not attractive behaviours.

😂

CarrieOnComplaining · 16/03/2025 10:33

You know the Zones on the TfL / tube map?

They aren’t really fare prices, they are boundaries for good looks. I’m not allowed in Zone 1. Which is where visitors and tourists generally spend their time so they only see our prime specimens.

Come to Zone 3 and you will find us, queuing outside Morley’s Chicken shops in our Primark leggings and hoodies. In Zone 4 they queue in their pyjamas and pink dressing gowns.

BarneyRonson · 16/03/2025 10:34

I used to think london had a higher proportion of good looking people, but not nowadays. There are tons of very unsmiley unfit looking people in scruffy clothing wearing no colour at all. Black puffa jacket uniform.

BettyWont · 16/03/2025 10:37

I've never really thought about it OP but I agree.

LlynTegid · 16/03/2025 10:40

I live in outer London now. I had an uncle in Manchester who I used to visit from time to time, and until recently a supplier who I visited.

My experience and opinion is not that of the OPs.

Do tell.. what look does Liverpool women have? Not antagonistic, just curious since I've been there and didn't notice any special style.

Nothing negative at all about Liverpudlians, my Grandpa was born in Liverpool and I love it there. It’s hard to describe without hearing their accents I could tell that John Bishop and Jodie Comer were from Liverpool, they just have the look.

cadooyahoo · 16/03/2025 10:41

@Ginmonkeyagain

As someone with French family yes & no! 😆Many French (particularly older) think our fashion sense is a bit odd, kooky, voluminous. Depends if you value that opinion or not.
