To think the average Londoner is better looking?

I’m from a town near Manchester. Often go to towns nearby and into Manchester. There are all sorts of people of course.

I am currently in London and I can’t get out of my head that the average person here is much more attractive than the average person outside of London. I can’t place why. Is it that people here have more dosh for skincare?😂

Joking aside, I think there is more of a dressing up culture in some Northern cities.

I remember a few of us travelling up to Liverpool for the weekend, we went straight out as it was a Friday night. We were dressed as most Londoners would be for Friday night drinks - smart casual workwear - may be a bit of extra lippy or a nicer top. We felt very dowdy as all the local women were dressed up with beautfully done hair and make up.

I'm also in Scotland and find the same. So much obesity, smoking and poor dress sense.

I think the word you’re looking for is poverty.

I recently went to Leeds and most of the young girls were dressed beautifully for a night out, really polished.

I am in London occasionally -maybe because I don’t travel at peak times (when rich professionals are travelling) but I would say pretty ordinary looking, good and bad, and no one speaks.
i do notice many many dressed in black which is pretty boring.
Not so many fat but you aren’t going to live on low wage and be able to afford accommodation in London so can prob also eat well and afford the gym.

You do know that plenty of low earners live in London - they’re not bussed in from the provinces before dawn! Just had a quick Google - 22% of London housing is social housing.

I always think this when l go to European cities but l thinkntheu dress nicely in general

It’s money. I’m willing to bet most of the people you are referring to are on weight loss jabs, live in generously sized houses, live lives with very little stress can afford to eat fresh organic food and have good skin care and have husbands earning big bucks in city jobs.

Half of Londoners live in flats and it is even higher for those who live in expensive areas like hampstead and Kensington. If you live in small spaces but have money there is the tendency to spend more on lifestyle like on expensive gym memberships and quality food.

mjf981 · 16/03/2025 11:04

You were probably in central London, seeing wealthy people.
It would be a different story if you went out to Romford or Croydon. There are some very rough people in many parts of London, mostly away from the centre.

Flumperina · 16/03/2025 11:17

I live in Kensington and yes, the good looking people over the age of 20, are often the ones who can afford healthy food, are not overweight and probably exercise regularly and have enough money to dress well and get good haircuts or beauty treatments. Generally child free too.

I notice on my commute, the young women with expensive coats and accessories tend to be on the tube very early or late and look bloody miserable.

There are a lot of expats and foreign students and often they look a lot better dressed or naturally better looking than the locals.

Errr... what? Londoners are way less friendly than people in the Midlands and Yorkshire, which are admittedly the only other bits of the country I have much experience of. Brummies and Black Countey folk being the friendliest of the lot.

I also strongly deny your claim that people from the 'regions' scowl / complain / blame more.

I realise we are both looking at huge generalisations here (which are in themselves broad enough to be ludicrous) but I genuinely don't get where you've managed to get your particular generalisation from.

Probably agree about general attractiveness - or at least levels of flattering grooming - being higher in London though...

Completely agree with you on this.
And The Mash Report did a sketch on it: 'Northern terrifies Londoners by saying "hello"' 🤣

You know the Zones on the TfL / tube map?

They aren’t really fare prices, they are boundaries for good looks. I’m not allowed in Zone 1. Which is where visitors and tourists generally spend their time so they only see our prime specimens.

Come to Zone 3 and you will find us, queuing outside Morley’s Chicken shops in our Primark leggings and hoodies. In Zone 4 they queue in their pyjamas and pink dressing gowns.

Now that the Elizabeth Line has been constructed it would appear that I was born in Zone 12 😳

Treesandsheepeverywhere · 16/03/2025 11:43

Small town = small mentality.
Big city = big dreams.

Lots of walking as others have said, but mindset too.

Londoners have a go get attitude, always on the go with chances of something happening at short notice.

Outside of London, I've found people don't take care of themselves as much and more interested in gossip.

Not everyone obviously, but majority.

mondaytosunday · 16/03/2025 11:54

I live in Zone 3 and definitely feel a bit dowdy when going in to central London. I think people do tend to dress better in the capital, better groomed etc.

Evaka · 16/03/2025 11:55

Yeah, I'm a grade A smokeshow.

PuppyMonkey · 16/03/2025 11:55

Outside of London people use too much fabric softener and it smells really strong. I think it is a class identifier to smell strongly of Lenor or Comfort.

This is gold. Grin

LoserWinner · 16/03/2025 12:07

I wonder if it’s also about the fact that there isn’t really a local ‘style’ - people wear a much wider range of stuff without anybody commenting or even really noticing, so we tend to dress in what suits us best rather than what local fashion dictates. That makes people more confident and comfortable in their skin. You can be sat in the tube alongside people wearing national dress, a sequinned tutu, designer tailoring, primark sweats, goth blacks or jeans and a jumper, and they are all happy doing their own thing.

JustSawJohnny · 16/03/2025 12:20

YOU personally might be impressed with how 'turned out' some people are in a very small area of the capital but to suggest that they are generally 'better looking' is utterly ridiculous.

London tends to attract young people, rich people and fashionable people. Arguably, these can be viewed as 'more attractive' in appearance, but it's still a dumb thing to think.

JustSawJohnny · 16/03/2025 12:22

WTF?!!!

This is nothing short of batshittery.

DenholmElliot11 · 16/03/2025 12:22

I live in Worcestershire and I’m fucking gorgeous.

YourLuckyPearlGoose · 16/03/2025 12:32

A lot of it is down to money (food, skincare, supplements, wellbeing) and access to a wider variety of services, treatments and clothing that bring out the best in you.

There’s also more scope in cities like London to be whoever you want - and I think that authenticity gives happiness and confidence, which is the best glow up of all.

Shetlands · 16/03/2025 12:37

😂It's well known that working class folks dab Lenor behind their ears to cover up the stink of pie & chips.

The most gorgeous looking people I've ever seen are in central Milan. Impeccably groomed, top class tailoring, high quality shoes and bags, expensive haircuts, well toned figures, great skin - men and women, all ages.

SwanOfThoseThings · 16/03/2025 12:40

This might shed some light on the difference.

To think the average Londoner is better looking?
TeaIsNice · 16/03/2025 12:43

more money, younger population. but trust me, there will be ugly fuckers everywhere

PatsFruitCake · 16/03/2025 12:45

I live in Cumbria, frequently dress in outdoor gear and don't wear make up. When I'm going to London I tend to make a effort to wear more stylish clothes and put make up on. I'd have thought on any given day a high proportion of people in central London are non locals/tourists making an effort.

I also use unperfumed washing powder and don't use fabric softener at all so maybe I'm not a true northerner 😁

Don’t you find the northern look quite overdone? I just wouldn’t want anyone to think I had that much free time on my hands? Hair curling and fake tanning, feels thoroughly unmodern to my eye. London and its people are quite busy, which I think is reflected in our fashion, hair and make up trends. Like someone else said, most Londoners use public transport and walk everywhere, so you’re hardly going to do that in spike heels and fake tan.
