To think the average Londoner is better looking?

I’m from a town near Manchester. Often go to towns nearby and into Manchester. There are all sorts of people of course.

I am currently in London and I can’t get out of my head that the average person here is much more attractive than the average person outside of London. I can’t place why. Is it that people here have more dosh for skincare?😂

Yanbu. It's the way Londoners hold themselves. Comfortable in their own skin.
They are also generally kinder and more tolerant than those in other parts of the country which comes out in their faces - a smile makes everone look more attractive than a frown.
People in the "regions" always seem to be scowling / complaining / blaming someone else. Not attractive behaviours.

The northern line during rush hour is a great example of how happy and friendly London is. I say that as someone who loves London.

LividSunshine · 16/03/2025 09:45

My mum used to say "People in Hyde look poor".

And while it's harsh, it's right. I think London just has all the opposite criteria to Hyde. (That's Hyde nr Manchester, not Hyde Park!)

cadooyahoo · 16/03/2025 09:45

I think that there is more opportunity to develop your own individual style here - the wealth of different cultures, freedom of expression and street style influence mean that women (and men) here dress differently and I think better, on the whole. And I don’t think it’s about money, the clothes aren’t necessarily more expensive.

I think that was true but has been lost somewhat.

cadooyahoo · 16/03/2025 09:46

It’s money. I’m willing to bet most of the people you are referring to are on weight loss jabs, live in generously sized houses, live lives with very little stress can afford to eat fresh organic food and have good skin care and have husbands earning big bucks in city jobs.

The vast majority of Londoners do not fit this

LadyOfTheCanyon · 16/03/2025 09:46

Yeah you’re probably right. All the people in my town look like Fraggles.

cadooyahoo · 16/03/2025 09:46

Definitely slimmer though

MarchHairs · 16/03/2025 09:47

I have noticed this too

I think more attractive people are more likely to succeed in interview, and there is a higher proportion of good jobs in the city, so that alone skews the city population more attractive.

The per capita population of posher London areas has a demographic of fewer people with disabilities serious enough to prevent them from working. For obvious reasons.

The whole thing is a bit shit really. Too much disparity in the world.

PrincessOfPreschool · 16/03/2025 09:47

I'm not! (better looking)

But perhaps any city centre has a higher proportion of better looking people. People are going out, shopping (ie. More interested in looks than genereal population) or on holiday (more time to get ready, more relaxed) or just younger (mostly under 40) as older purple will be much fewer in a city centre.

Utopia!

Me neither. I went to New York last year and was struck by how slim and stylish the New York women were in comparison to us in London.

They probably don't eat. There was a funny bit in a Jay McInerney novel where two New York women ordered an omelette to share.

MasterBeth · 16/03/2025 09:48

It a) completely depends where you go in London and b) has a lot to do with wealth.

Richer people, especially richer working people in cities, are on average, slimmer, better dressed and healthier.

You obviously don't use the Tube much, do you?

Wonderberry · 16/03/2025 09:49

I'm not sure about London compared to all cities, but I did go to a deprived northern city and I was surprised at how different the people looked there. I assume it was deprivation, leading to a poor diet, increased smoking etc.

cadooyahoo · 16/03/2025 09:49

Although it's not my fashion style I thought Liverpool had some very attractive people (facially) when I visited.

Sidewinderer · 16/03/2025 09:49

I went out of London for a short break and there are a lot more chavvy people outside of London. Even the broke people of London didn’t look as bad as entire families looking how they looked.

The young girls dress too old. In London they tend to dress like they are going to play in the park and wear appropriate for the weather clothing, outside of London the small girls are wearing bodycon and adult clothes. It looks bizarre little breast buds popping out.

Outside of London people use too much fabric softener and it smells really strong. I think it is a class identifier to smell strongly of Lenor or Comfort.

The adult men wear football shirts for standard and have varying degrees of pot belly that they don’t try to hide.

The women have bad skin and bad dye job haircuts.

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 16/03/2025 09:49

It’s basically weight - Londoners walk everywhere and clothes. Nicer and you can’t wear London clothes in my area, just not practical.

Of course we eat. But it’s true that portion sizes are often smaller in London - BIL used to own a restaurant in the West Country, we were astonished at the huge portions but he said that his customers wouldn’t like getting smaller portions as they wouldn’t feel it was value for money.

cadooyahoo · 16/03/2025 09:51

This is nonsense as a born & raised Londoner plenty of people here don't dress appropriately for the weather & put their dc in inappropriate clothes. London is big with a fair amount of people.

Errr... what? Londoners are way less friendly than people in the Midlands and Yorkshire, which are admittedly the only other bits of the country I have much experience of. Brummies and Black Countey folk being the friendliest of the lot.

I also strongly deny your claim that people from the 'regions' scowl / complain / blame more.

I realise we are both looking at huge generalisations here (which are in themselves broad enough to be ludicrous) but I genuinely don't get where you've managed to get your particular generalisation from.

Probably agree about general attractiveness - or at least levels of flattering grooming - being higher in London though...

Brummies and Black Countey folk being the friendliest of the lot.

Yy! The Venn diagram of people who think people from the Black Country are miserable, based on a tedious stereotype of the accent, and people who have actually spent any time in the West Midlands, is two circles bab.

SwanOfThoseThings · 16/03/2025 09:52

I only ever see the zone 1 city areas of London (only go there for work) so there probably is a higher proportion of affluent people there - I tend to notice people are well dressed on average whereas I am not.

It doesn't bother me. I prioritise safety and comfort if I have to go to London, taking coats/bags that are most secure rather than most stylish, so I am less likely to get pickpocketed and looking a bit scruffier than the average person will suggest (correctly) that I don't have e.g. a high end phone and lots of money/credit at my disposal, that would make me an attractive target to muggers.

Themostbeautifulcats · 16/03/2025 09:52

I live in an area with high deprivation in the north east which I think shows in people’s faces, as well as not having the means to pay for better nutrition, clothes, haircuts, skincare etc. I used to work in London regularly and noticed the difference too. Also men were generally much taller.

My theory is that confident people are often the ones to move to the big city, and confidence often comes as a result of an unconscious bias towards more attractive people.

There are undoubtedly some mingers in London too - and those were the ones I attracted 😀

MJconfessions · 16/03/2025 09:52

To be honest I do think certain areas have a look - like women from Essex, Liverpool, Manchester have a certain look

arcticpandas · 16/03/2025 09:52

I think people in all capitals tend to put more focus on their appearance. That goes for visitors going to the capitals as well. But no, I don't think Londoners are more beautiful than avarage, they are just styled. On the other hand if you go to Copenhagen (Denmark) or Stockholm (Sweden) you will see a lot of natural beautiful people.

Dutchhouse14 · 16/03/2025 09:54

Depends on area, but I think its more grooming than attractiveness, when I worked in London everyone made a lot more effort with their appearance and clothing than my surburban town. I used to effortlessly pick up fashion ideas etc just by observation and availablity of shops (pre online shopping!).
However there are deprived pockets in London where the above doesn't apply so it's also affluence

Do tell.. what look does Liverpool women have? Not antagonistic, just curious since I've been there and didn't notice any special style.
