To think the average Londoner is better looking?

I’m from a town near Manchester. Often go to towns nearby and into Manchester. There are all sorts of people of course.

I am currently in London and I can’t get out of my head that the average person here is much more attractive than the average person outside of London. I can’t place why. Is it that people here have more dosh for skincare?😂

They must be French.

Ddakji · 16/03/2025 09:34

I’m a Londoner who was in Manchester yesterday and what I noticed was much more make up and much less clothing. Didn’t think anyone was more or less attractive though!

But when DD was younger another thing I noticed was the further from the centre of London you get, the more likely that little children would be dressed very stereotypically (ie girls in head to toe pink and boys with buzz cuts in camo) and were fatter. It’s very unusual to see fat young children in my bit of zone 2.

Life in central and inner London is its own bubble.

SemperIdem · 16/03/2025 09:35

Generally speaking people who live in cities (especially capital cities) are slimmer than the average across the country.

In London’s case, there will be increased wealth in comparison to other cities in the UK.

There is also going to be significantly greater genetic diversity. Which helps attractiveness significantly.

Goldenbear · 16/03/2025 09:35

I am not sure, I have family in Denmark and personally I think Copenhagen has more naturally good looking people i.e not done up and the population is 8 million less than London.

It’s surprised me that no one has as yet made the point that not all people in London are Londoners!

Tikeahulilly · 16/03/2025 09:36

I'm from a small city in Scotland and live in london and understand what you mean. I notice and my children notice it with smoking when I take them back. Groups of folk standing outside before then go in

I think it's more about the concentration of the people in the non London places. Eg) one main shopping centre in a place will be where everyone goes. So

Whereas in London it's larger, more areas for people to go so you don't have the same , plus tourists etc mixed in... with my smoking example you don't have 20 people standing outside one shopping centre smoking making it a thing.

Might be wrong but I have observed similar

Kuretake · 16/03/2025 09:37

It's just wealth. And walking actually, that's the big difference I notice but that applies to cities generally. If you work somewhere you drive to then sit at a desk then you're hardly moving all day. I have a desk job but my commute involves at least 6k steps so I'm quite active before any effort at any exercise.

I'm not at all attractive though so it's not me causing the overall trend!

Yanbu. It's the way Londoners hold themselves. Comfortable in their own skin.
They are also generally kinder and more tolerant than those in other parts of the country which comes out in their faces - a smile makes everone look more attractive than a frown.
People in the "regions" always seem to be scowling / complaining / blaming someone else. Not attractive behaviours.

Errr... what? Londoners are way less friendly than people in the Midlands and Yorkshire, which are admittedly the only other bits of the country I have much experience of. Brummies and Black Countey folk being the friendliest of the lot.

I also strongly deny your claim that people from the 'regions' scowl / complain / blame more.

I realise we are both looking at huge generalisations here (which are in themselves broad enough to be ludicrous) but I genuinely don't get where you've managed to get your particular generalisation from.

Probably agree about general attractiveness - or at least levels of flattering grooming - being higher in London though...

TabloidFootprints · 16/03/2025 09:38

I commute from an Essex town to London, and I have often had a similar thought, although my thoughts is that people are better/ more interestingly dressed/styled, not better looking, although I guess it might amount to the same thing. And I think this as soon as I arrive in Stratford, which is not a wealthy part of London, so it isn't that.

cadooyahoo · 16/03/2025 09:38

More young people in general maybe because youth is attractive? Facially I don't think we are a good looking bunch!

Fagli · 16/03/2025 09:39

How do you know all these people were from London? We have loads of tourists, people dressed up for work, people dressed up for a day/night out, people going to the opera/theatre. It’s a destination tourist attraction, so lots of people won’t be from London and are probably making more of an effort.

But saying that, I’ll take the compliment!!

ReggaetonLente · 16/03/2025 09:39

I think that there is more opportunity to develop your own individual style here - the wealth of different cultures, freedom of expression and street style influence mean that women (and men) here dress differently and I think better, on the whole. And I don’t think it’s about money, the clothes aren’t necessarily more expensive.

Saying that though I still see lots of pyjamas and Uggs on the school run!

cadooyahoo · 16/03/2025 09:39

London definitely used to have the edge fashion wise but not sure now since we have lost most of the high street & fashion is more homogenous.

LucyMonth · 16/03/2025 09:40

Whenever I watch the Men’s World Cup I always look at the fans for each country’s team and think the British fans look like absolute gammons. We are so overweight, pasty, unstylish and just generally unwell looking. Climate, diet, lifestyle and dropping standards of living in the UK is the cause I suspect.

Many folk in London aren’t Londoners. They’re from all over the place.

Probably to do with the fact that everyone commutes by foot ie tube or buses so people are fitter and probably paying more attention to what they wear and how they look as “on show” all the time?

I think this is what helps! Another pp mentioned genetic diversity. People are from everywhere in London, and I sometimes wonder if that genetic mix ends up making stronger bone structured people in the long term

MrsPeregrine · 16/03/2025 09:40

It’s money. I’m willing to bet most of the people you are referring to are on weight loss jabs, live in generously sized houses, live lives with very little stress can afford to eat fresh organic food and have good skin care and have husbands earning big bucks in city jobs.

cadooyahoo · 16/03/2025 09:40

A lot of the wealthy in wealthy parts of London aren't English!

BumpyaDaisyevna · 16/03/2025 09:41

really notice it when I go to our London office in the City - everyone well dressed, well presented and generally look a lot healthier and wealthier even than those in Leeds - which is a booming northern town.

of course the people I see there are all in well paid jobs etc.

tangoboxing · 16/03/2025 09:42

Definitely thinner - it’s really striking when I commute in from my regional home town. I assume that’s a result of being more affluent, younger & more active on average.

cadooyahoo · 16/03/2025 09:42

As a Londoner I always find people more attractive in coastal towns. Presumed ot was the tan & outdoors lifestyle, 60 plus men &
women defo look better than the average older person in London imo

TellReign · 16/03/2025 09:43

Haha you will get flamed OP - but I lived in London for years and then moved back up north and I think exactly the same. I think perhaps the diversity and more drive and zest for life perhaps helps most appear more attractive? I don’t know what it is really but I hear ya.

roses2 · 16/03/2025 09:44

Yes this is a well studied concept - people in large cities are thinner, have more money on average and dress better.

pinkdelight · 16/03/2025 09:44

I'm from the north, live in London, and go back to the north a lot.

Obviously this: There are all sorts of people of course.

And particularly in London, which is huge, the areas are all different anyway. I'd say it's noticeable that people are richer/swisher around expensive parts of West London, like the Kings Road will have more 'well turned out' people than a northern shopping mall, but also more than a Croydon shopping mall or similar. That's about money and tribes. I don't especially think that sloaney look is more attractive or interesting though, often the opposite. It can feel a bit uninspired.

What I find is that in cities in the north-west (can't speak for the rest), there will be some extremely well turned out people - women who get their hair, nails, make-up done and dress up, and the male equivalent. Whether you find that look good-looking is again a matter of taste. But what I also find - and like - is that people generally give less of a shit if you're not so dressed up, so I like that I can relax and go out in scruffier/more comfortable gear and not get judged. You can be as you choose and people take you as they find you, it's not so much about appearances, though of course there are still some specific tribes.

So I definitely don't think it's about Londoners being more comfortable in their own skin or anything like that. I like both places though and the mix of people makes both interesting and different. There's not really a 'better' about it.

I always feel very average looks & height wise in Denmark & Sweden 😆
