To think the average Londoner is better looking?

I’m from a town near Manchester. Often go to towns nearby and into Manchester. There are all sorts of people of course.

I am currently in London and I can’t get out of my head that the average person here is much more attractive than the average person outside of London. I can’t place why. Is it that people here have more dosh for skincare?😂

Many places have rubbish public transport -I’m always thrilled to jump on and off tube and trains in London

You know the Zones on the TfL / tube map?

They aren’t really fare prices, they are boundaries for good looks. I’m not allowed in Zone 1. Which is where visitors and tourists generally spend their time so they only see our prime specimens.

Come to Zone 3 and you will find us, queuing outside Morley’s Chicken shops in our Primark leggings and hoodies. In Zone 4 they queue in their pyjamas and pink dressing gowns.

Ooh there’s an episode of Black Mi rror right there!

You’d have to get plastic surgery to move into zone 1. As you aged you’d have to move further and further out.

Outside of London would be a zone less wasteland full of people with acne or too poor to afford a nose job.

Icanttakethisanymore · 16/03/2025 12:55

People who live in wealthy places are healthier and have more money to spend on their appearance (hair, clothes etc) so it follows they would ‘look better’.

MidnightMeltdown · 16/03/2025 13:01

Yes! I noticed this too (not about London specifically, but South East in general). I was born and brought up the south east and when I moved north, I noticed that people, in general, were less attractive. It was very noticeable. Maybe I’m just biased, but think they have a different DNA mix up here.

haveyouopenedyourbowelstoday · 16/03/2025 13:02

Really interesting thread. We were in London last weekend and so many people were out running. Also thinking about it I didn’t see many people obviously obese.
I’m in south wales where I’m definitely aware of less runners and more obesity.

Scrubberdubber · 16/03/2025 13:10

I live by the seaside, I hate to admit it but I have noticed this in the summer lots of people come from London and the town is full of good looking slim people in the winter it's pretty much just the locals and I suppose we are a rather unattractive lot 😩

That comment made me think of the districts in hunger games

pinkdelight · 16/03/2025 13:15

I just wouldn’t want anyone to think I had that much free time on my hands

Why not? Having time on your hands could be a sign that you're a minted lady of leisure. I'm not one and it's not my bag personally but I wouldn't think less of someone for having time on their hands and spending it at the gym/salon.

Another thing I’ve noticed is that people in the north tend to be significantly more pasty (unless orange fake tanned) because we get less sun up here. This may also be a contributing factor

StMarie4me · 16/03/2025 13:16

London’s a big place. Is your research completed in every borough? Or just the City? 🤔

pinkdelight · 16/03/2025 13:42

people in the north tend to be significantly more pasty

Don't you find people in Cornwall tend to be more pasty? And us from up north tend to be more pie?

crackofdoom · 16/03/2025 13:42

Shetlands · 16/03/2025 12:37

Outside of London people use too much fabric softener and it smells really strong. I think it is a class identifier to smell strongly of Lenor or Comfort.

😂It's well known that working class folks dab Lenor behind their ears to cover up the stink of pie & chips.

The most gorgeous looking people I've ever seen are in central Milan. Impeccably groomed, top class tailoring, high quality shoes and bags, expensive haircuts, well toned figures, great skin - men and women, all ages.

Yep, and it probably wouldn't surprise you to find out that people look appreciably chunkier and dowdier in Pordenone or Porretta Terme.

Ratisshortforratthew · 16/03/2025 13:45

You clearly haven’t been to South Norwood 😂😂😂 (where I live) I do know what you mean though. Central London is full of cool professional looking people. I make an effort when I go into central to work, less so if I’m WFH. The further out you get, the more gross and scruffy people are

deconstructingKaren · 16/03/2025 14:21

I agree, was thinking this when I was there last week

PurpleFlower1983 · 16/03/2025 09:13

I think it’s to do with money and depends what part of London you are in.

I agree broadly with the OP - but can you please tell me which part of London have the most attractive peeps

  • I’ll be there (like a shot) -
Ginmonkeyagain · 16/03/2025 15:46

@80smonster oh it definitely isn't a look for me - but I do rather admire the effort made.

SirDanielBrackley · 16/03/2025 16:04

Only if they come from South London.

North Londoners are pig ugly.

HTH

JaneJeffer · 16/03/2025 16:06

They are also generally kinder and more tolerant than those in other parts of the country which comes out in their faces - a smile makes everone look more attractive than a frown.

I am not sure, I have family in Denmark and personally I think Copenhagen has more naturally good looking people i.e not done up and the population is 8 million less than London

I always feel very average looks & height wise in Denmark & Sweden 😆

Ha yes, it’s weird isn’t it? My ex is Norwegian, as is one of my oldest friends (no prizes for guessing who introduced me to the ex) so I spend a fair bit of time in Norway and Denmark. The natives always assume I’m local as I’m tall and blonde. I kind of like fitting in. Although my Norwegian/Danish isn’t great. I can say a few things very convincingly but any follow-up questions give the game away. Smile It’s better if I keep my mouth shut ha.

I live in inner London and people around where I live are definitely slimmer (and fairly fitness obsessed) and dress differently to “the provinces” Of course much of it is down to practicality. When I visit family “up North”, I always start off sneering a little at all the anoraks and boots being worn around me. Then as I step out of my car wearing my cashmere overcoat (assuming I’ve actually remembered my coat, duh?) and handmade shoes, into the rain and mud, I realise who the idiot is. That will be me! Grin

Thepeopleversuswork · 16/03/2025 17:28

Get on a bus out to Tower Hamlets or Lewisham, the kind of areas where ordinary Londoners live, and you'll see more people like those from your home town.

This. The "London" that most people see when they come here is a snapshot mainly peopled by tourists and not representative of actual London.

London is incredibly diverse and includes populations ranging from the top 1% in terms of wealth to third world levels of poverty. The PP is correct that if you walk through Tower Hamlets or Lewisham you will see a very different side to the very well heeled people you would see strolling around Chelsea. There is poverty in some parts of London which exceeds most parts of the UK and nothing glamorous about it.

I will say I do think London has less of the "gammon" factor that you see in a lot of English towns though: very overweight, pasty people who don't do any exercise or get enough sun, usually wearing nasty sportswear, with bad haircuts. Mainly because there is a much larger proportion of non white people and the gammon types usually don't like living in London (probably because they don't like the non white people).

Izzy393 · 16/03/2025 17:49

I think people in London look classier. When I’ve been in Manchester and Newcastle there’s too much fake tan, fake eyelashes, huge eyebrows, fake nails, thick makeup and labels galore … it’s just too much and far too try hard and chavvy.

Westfacing · 16/03/2025 17:52

YANBU - we are all indeed very lovely looking! Grin

Disturbia81 · 16/03/2025 20:24

People flock to London from all over the world to chase their dreams, it’s where all
the action is happening. Same as new york. More models, actors, rich people.
it’s not about youth, the good looking people are always good looking.
more pressure to be slim and dress well.
It’s more the norm to be like that so you have to compete.

Namechanger385u4p · 16/03/2025 20:37

I live in sw london and always find my deprived hometown shocking when i see how fat people are. And how much cheap sports wear there is. It's such a bubble, but it's money and generally living an "easier" life

TeamMandrake · 16/03/2025 20:48

Are they just wearing less clothes, because the tube is so unbearably hot? Whereas, in my town, people are walking round in hats, scarves and winter puffer jackets?
