Classmate with TV in bathroom

Gregoriouppy · 15/03/2025 10:11

My son goes to a state school and his classmate keeps going on about having a TV in his bathroom. Aibu to think this is the most pointless and ridiculous thing ever!?
No amount of money would make me even consider having that!

my son said he keeps bragging about it so I said he should tell him to take a book to the bog instead!!! 🤣

ive only ever seen tvs in hotel bathrooms. Whatever floats their boat, though. Just as long as it’s not a massive electrocution risk.

Karen4President · 15/03/2025 10:13

I agree it’s daft, but what makes you think it’s for sitting on the loo? I assume it’s for relaxing in the bath.

MasterBeth · 15/03/2025 10:13

No, it is not the most pointless and ridiculous thing ever. HTH.

We stayed somewhere and there was a tv mounted in the wall near the bath

belladonna22 · 15/03/2025 10:17

I’ve seen this in a couple of homes - usually for watching while in the bath or generally having on while getting ready in the bathroom. Not something I’d choose, but different strokes for different folks.

I never spend long enough on the loo to watch anything.

Tell your son - his friend and their family need to eat more fibre.

TheAmusedQuail · 15/03/2025 10:17

OMG, I'd forgotten this. I stayed in the swankiest hotel once (got upgraded). The bathroom had a huge adjacent dressing room.

In front of the bath, was a TV embedded in the wall. I'm not a huge TV fan, but the luxury of watching TV in the bath, with a glass of bubbly next to me was fabulous. So far removed from my daily life it was surreal.

Snorlaxo · 15/03/2025 10:18

You’re assuming that it’s true…
My son came home saying that someone at school had 3 PS5s (hard to get hold of at the time ). I replied didn’t you tell him that we have 20 PS5s and 30 Xboxes which made him realise that some people talk 💩 and playing along or rolling eyes is the way forward.
I think most people who watch tv in the bath use a tablet or phone

Haha
yea same here! I don’t stay in there long enough tbh and we have a nice big bathroom!

Why the need to be so judgemental about other peoples’ choices that have absolutely nothing to do with you?

This is true as another friend has been to his house and seen it.

I use my ipad if i'm washing my hair or having a bath.

purpleme12 · 15/03/2025 10:19

If I had the money yes I'd probably get a TV in the bathroom

I do like you watch stuff in the bath

So not pointless

LightDrizzle · 15/03/2025 10:19

I’ve heard of this and had it in a hotel, it was set into the wall. My daughter would love it but it would be lost on me as I prefer a shower and don’t stay in a bath as long as I think I’m going to.

I can see why he thinks it’s flash and is having a bit of a boast. Kids used to boast about their dad’s cars have a sunroof or electric windows back in the dark ages when I was at primary school. If he bangs on about it too much doubtless they’ll take the piss or tell to shut up as he’s boring so it will sort itself out. It’s all pretty harmless.

Because it’s a strange thing to have and why brag about it!? It’s more about the bragging tbh

in the days of portable tech seems pointless to have it mounted/built in

pizzaHeart · 15/03/2025 10:27

What age?
I’m not surprised that he is going on and on about this, some people are just the type who always boasts and stays like this way into adulthood.
I wouldn’t put tv into bathroom for health and safety reasons. I read far too many detectives stories where victim was electrocuted. However depending on the style of the bathroom and how often people take bath it might be ok for them .

Gregoriouppy · 15/03/2025 10:28

@pizzaHeart year 6. He seems to brag about a lot of stuff! Luckily we’re not going to the same secondary.

Why is it relevant what type of school he goes to? It’s ridiculous whether the parents pay for education or they are state educated.

I guess it’s a cliche of private schools, most who attend are rich Russians or footballers kids and that’s where you expect it. (Friend teaches at private and that’s what she has told me).

But it pretty much nails the definition of a luxury, something unnecessary but relatively expensive that brings pleasure to the user or owner. I’m surprised that even if it isn’t to your taste that you can’t see that.

This boy thinks his house has got a super cool, luxury thing and he’s boasting about it as people down the ages have boasted about their Sindy’s Dream House/ their mum and dad’s garden bar/ sports car/ hunter/ phaeton. Most children boast at some point and are then socially conditioned to do it more stealthily. With social media we are all boasting as never before but always #humble of course.

I’d be wary of your son picking up any sneering about taste in this case. Almost all taste is learned and it is often riddled with class distinctions and scorn.

AquaPeer · 15/03/2025 10:43

TVs are pretty cheap (presumably the mention of state school was made under the idea you need loadsa money to have a bathroom tv?)

however its massively old fashioned, like something from the 90s. Who wouldn’t take their iPad or phone into the bathroom if they wanted to watch something?!? (Both of which cost far more than a tv, to your point)

Comedycook · 15/03/2025 10:43

Yabvu....so odd that you even thought it worthy of a thread on here. Someone has chosen to spend their money on something you wouldn't want...stop the press!
