Classmate with TV in bathroom

My son goes to a state school and his classmate keeps going on about having a TV in his bathroom. Aibu to think this is the most pointless and ridiculous thing ever!?
No amount of money would make me even consider having that!

my son said he keeps bragging about it so I said he should tell him to take a book to the bog instead!!! 🤣

This thread is so funny. 🤣 I feel a bit sorry for those who are genuinely getting worked up about this. Why?! My husband loves his baths whilst watching golf 🤣 Why would people begrudge someone this? It really has no impact on you whatever 🤷‍♀️

But it's allowed people to feel good about themselves by saying tacky and chavvy and even gaudiness tho I suspect she means gauche.

Boomer55 · 17/03/2025 15:10

I wouldn't have a TV in the bedroom, not my thing, and I've never had one in the bathroom, but each to their own. 👍

It's not tacky - it's just preferences- and nothing that I feel the need to get worked up about. 😉

If you read again OP's first message, you can see how they express in really clear terms how she finds it pointless and ridiculous. To which I wholeheartedly agree with.

Yes exactly!

I am with you, OP. It screams chavvy and tacky. It takes a special kind of gaudiness to think that's a good idea

Yes this is exactly it!

Yes but at least they’ll be humble

Bragging much OP?

I don't believe in good taste, just different taste.

Bitching and sneering about other people's tastes is not something to be proud of though.

Agreed. It seems to be a peculiarity of the aspirational lower-middle class, born I think of insecurity and a desire to show that they know the ‘right’ things to do, to overtly belittle others. Think Hyacinth Bucket…. Far better to just live and let live, while inwardly judging - like the proper middle class ;)

AquaPeer · 18/03/2025 09:33

Aspirational middle class makes me cringe so much. Being middle class is the most boring and uninspiring thing you can be, the fan girling is so embarrassing

Hillsaremyhappyplace · 18/03/2025 09:40

The funny thing is my husband is really posh. Public school blah blah He doesn’t give a monkeys what people think. He loves watching sport in the bath, 😂

UpsideDownChairs · 18/03/2025 09:41

I wouldn't put a TV in there, but I often perch my ipad on a shelf at the end of the bath that I put in especially for that purpose...

TVs are so old hat. My kids barely use the TVs in the house - they much prefer to watch on their ipads.

GasPanic · 18/03/2025 09:41

They are not very expensive. You can buy them on Amazon and probably install one for £1000. Hardly unimaginable wealth.

They tend to be special, sealed and low voltage to stop the danger from electricity and water. It's unwise to put a normal TV in there.

A lot of people like to soak in the bath so having a TV to watch makes sense.

You can also get some that double as a mirror.

Toddlerteaplease · 18/03/2025 10:20

Oo I’d love to watch TV in the bath!

Aha, so this whole thread was just a ‘look at me I have a bookcase in my bathroom, and DCs friend is so chavvy they have a television in theirs, aren’t I better than them?’ thread, under the guise of a kid being a show-off?? You should have just been honest from the start.

While you’re teaching your DC not to show off maybe teach them to respect all people no matter what their class and not to look down their noses at ones perceived as lower than them?

Also kids at my private school were not all Russians and footballers, what a strange thing to think.

TwigletsAndRadishes · 18/03/2025 13:30

I want to hate this idea so badly, because in general I hate flashy/tacky nonsense, but I secretly think I'd love it. I love long, hot baths but always end up getting out sooner than anticipated because of boredom. I try reading but it's hard to prop up a book and turn the pages without getting them wet and I don't like to take my phone or ipad in the bath. A TV would be perfect. 😂

If you are worried about judgy friends you can get one that doubles as a mirror, you can behave like a secret chav without anyone ever knowing.

If they ask you can say it is one of those posh electric mirrors with lights.

Just remember to hide the remote control in the bathroom cabinet when they come round, and wait till they have left before you fire up Love Island.

Isn’t he afraid he might catch the chav?

Isn’t he afraid he might catch the chav?

He’s too busy off shooting pheasant in his plus fours (when he’s not watching telly in the bath) to give it much thought.
