Classmate with TV in bathroom

My son goes to a state school and his classmate keeps going on about having a TV in his bathroom. Aibu to think this is the most pointless and ridiculous thing ever!?
No amount of money would make me even consider having that!

my son said he keeps bragging about it so I said he should tell him to take a book to the bog instead!!! 🤣

I have one!

It was here when we moved in. Our en-suite has a jacuzzi bath and there’s a tv built into the wall at the end. I have no idea how to use it, and never use that bath anyway so it’s very redundant. No point going through hassle and expense to get rid of it so it’s just there. It’s very discreet.

Personally, I don’t see the point but then again, I read in the bath so if tv is more of your thing while soaking and relaxing, I get why people would have them.

Gregoriouppy · 15/03/2025 10:45

@LightDrizzle because i think it’s quite kitschy.

But it was there when you moved in so I get it. They actually got it put in.

I think it’s tacky, like having a TV in the bedroom. Do something else! If every room in your house revolves around the TV I’m assuming you’re pretty limited in your hobbies / interests. There’s one TV in my house, in the living room where it belongs. I also agree that with modern technology why do you need a TV in the bathroom, just take a device in to watch something in the bathroom if you want.

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 15/03/2025 10:48

How is it powered? It must be built in because you can't have sockets in a bathroom, so it's been installed on purpose, not just propped up against the wall - it's an integral part of the bathroom design.

Not my thing, but I won't even have a TV in the bedroom. Bathrooms with TVs always strike me as a bit naff, like people can't even be away from a screen for long enough for a wee or a soak - take your iPad in if you want to watch in the bath!

Yes this! Agreed!

Not something I would brag about!

Thinking TVs around the house is tacky also old fashioned class based sneering, like the people who proudly tell you their mum wouldn’t let them watch itv as if this just doesn’t make their mum sound like a dimwit.

Iwantmyoldnameback · 15/03/2025 10:53

I can remember taking my portable into the bathroom and watching Emmerdale in peace when my kids were small. It was bliss. I also stayed in a hotel where you could see the TV from the bath if you left the door open. I don't see how it's tacky.

Gregoriouppy · 15/03/2025 10:54

whtever floats your boat I guess but I think it is. ESP at home!

It’s clearly for when you’re in the bath, not on the loo. I don’t understand why you think it’s odd. Baths are quite boring. I like the idea of being able to watch something while I soak.

Edited

Yep I have tons of hobbies, spend most of my free time reading or hiking but I also have a TV in the bedroom because I like nothing more, after a big hike, than to have a hot in bed with a good film.

Having a TV in the bedroom doesn’t mean I don’t have a life beyond the screen!

Gregoriouppy · 15/03/2025 10:56

Or just take a shower! More inclined to have the radio on tbh.
do they have inbuilt radios!? Lol

OP posts:
LightDrizzle · 15/03/2025 10:57

So yes, it’s really about the taste and not the boasting per se. Look at the vulgarians! Money can’t buy taste! We are still superior!

It was predictable that the involvement of a TV would bring the Mumsnet tastehounds baying. I wonder if we’ll see it referred to as a tele?

As I said, taste is learned, as it kindness and tolerance. I’d be more worried about your son picking up on sneering as to taste than about him catching the common from this jumped up vulgar little chap who thinks his bathroom is the dog’s bollocks.

Gregoriouppy · 15/03/2025 10:58

It’s true though money can’t buy taste! Many examples of that out in the real world.

My parents have a shower with inbuilt radio but it's years old.

Why is it tacky? I don't have one anymore but used too, now I just use the ipad as I said.

Ooohee · 15/03/2025 11:01

I can’t believe you’re on here sneering at an 11 year old child. Of course he’s bragging to his friends, he thinks it’s cool!

It’s more about the parents actually. Should have told him not to.

ShyMaryEllen · 15/03/2025 11:05

I can't imagine wanting one, but I couldn't care less how other people spend their money, or what they do in the privacy of their bathroom.

When my children were young we got a TV in the kitchen (one of those ones with a built-in VCR 😂) and snooty friends made a point of saying how they didn't watch enough TV to warrant such an aberration, completely missing the point, which was that it didn't mean we watched more than they did. It was more that we wanted more choice of where to do so. The children often had friends in watching or playing games on it, and I could see what they were up to when I wandered through or put the kettle on. It freed up the main TV (and sitting room) too.

Why is the fact that the child goes to a state school relevant, and why do you see choice of TV habits as being about money? I think that says more about you than the TV says about the other family.

whatsappdoc · 15/03/2025 11:05

It would be interesting to hear what your own children brag about. Eg. My mum thinks she's better than your mum.😛
