To be worried about DS name (rude comment)

Littlebittosunshine · 06/03/2025 19:16

My DS is13. Never had any worries about his name before now.
But yesterday at work I had a rather rude comment from a customer ( I'm a garden/landscaper so have a chat with them here and there) this customer in particular im not a huge fan of. Fine in terms of work but just talks non stop only about herself and likes to mention how wealthy she is. But yesterday my colleague mentioned my son in conversation by name. And she gasped and said "oh how awful, who would name their child such a thing, eugh sounds like a bad omen"
I am now concerned there are lots of people who think this but have just never said it to my face before.
His name is Jonah.
I'm aware it has meaning in the bible to Jonah and the whale but I'm not religious and named him after a rugby player.
YABU his name is fine. YNBU she's just rude.
Be honest please.

She’s being rude and ridiculous- it’s a lovely name.

OnePiece23 · 06/03/2025 19:18

Sorry I don't understand your poll.
But I love the name Jonah, I have heard people say it's a bad omen but just superstitious nonsense.

Whiskeyandkittens · 06/03/2025 19:18

Not sure how to vote, as his name is fine AND she's just rude!

Ghostofallnightmares · 06/03/2025 19:18

God, that's a niche biblical reference for most nowadays I would think .
She's just bloody rude !
Ignore

MILprob · 06/03/2025 19:19

I absolutely love Jonah. Classic but not really common. It was on my list for DS1 but DH said he would be called Jonah Boner so vetoed 🙄 I’m still annoyed about it as I think he’s just ridiculous and normal people wouldn’t think that. Never heard of it being an ominous name either,

DanielRicciardosSmile · 06/03/2025 19:20

Aren't both poll options the same? FWIW I think she's rude and the name is fine.

woodymumoftwo · 06/03/2025 19:20

Jonah is a lovely name x

Threecraws · 06/03/2025 19:20

Your poll options don't work but Jonah is a lovely name and she sounds awful

Arglefraster · 06/03/2025 19:21

Rude woman. Ignore!

I would only think of the amazing Jonah Lomu.

Holdonforsummer · 06/03/2025 19:21

Your poll doesn’t make sense - both answers mean she is wrong! But she is wrong, Jonah is a lovely name and I don’t see how it is like a bad omen. Don’t give it another thought!

stanleypops66 · 06/03/2025 19:21

It's a lovely name. Sounds very gentle.

wafflesmgee · 06/03/2025 19:23

Well she needs to read her bible properly because I think that the story of Jonah has a great message in it.
i think she’s may have confused it with the book of Job, which is more tragic.
i like the name Jonah
edited for spelling

Rosybud88 · 06/03/2025 19:24

Nah she’s just an arse - Jonah is a nice name x

Lindy2 · 06/03/2025 19:24

I like Jonah.

It does have unlucky connotations from the whale story and with sailors but most sensible adults can look past that and think it's a nice name. The person was rude.

Deliliah is another biblical name with some unfortunate associations but it now also becoming popular.

Cattery · 06/03/2025 19:24

It’s a nice name. Because she’s “wealthy” she thinks she can say what she likes. Nasty piece of work

TrixieFatell · 06/03/2025 19:24

Love the name, it was on our list but I'm not a fan of alliteration so it wasn't an option. It is a fantastic name though. She sounds rude. Why people feel they have the right to share their unwanted opinion with you is beyond me. Bitch about the name behind my back like normal people

theallotmentqueen · 06/03/2025 19:25

God, what a horrible woman. The name Jonah is lovely, plus the etymology of the term comes from 'dove', which I think is beautiful (and a symbol of peace and prosperity!)

steff13 · 06/03/2025 19:25

A bad omen because he might be swallowed by a whale? Regardless of recent events, that seems unlikely. It's a fine name. Maybe if you had named him Job I'd have understood her comment.

Bumdrops · 06/03/2025 19:25

The poll doesn’t make sense !
but it is a fab name and she is a Pratt !

NewishBroom · 06/03/2025 19:28

The vote means the same thing!

Littlebittosunshine · 06/03/2025 19:28

Sorry after a few comments I've realised I've done the poll wrong. YABU she's just rude YABU it's not a nice name.

It makes me think of Sleepless in Seattle.

DaveyTheCavy · 06/03/2025 19:30

An omen? What?!!! She actually is worried that he will be eaten by a whale or something ??

Beebsta · 06/03/2025 19:31

Ha ha, we considered calling my oldest son Logan but I just couldn’t because we were moving to australia & all I could think about was him getting called Logan the Bogan.

instead we named him Dylan. We sometimes jokingly call him Dylan the Villian. He had a teacher who called him Dylie.

HobnobsChoice · 06/03/2025 19:32

Well so long as Jonah doesn't do the opposite of what any deities command and then run away to sea he won't be swallowed by a whale.
As a child I used to get the story of Jonah confused with Rudyard Kipling "How the Whale got his throat".
