To be worried about DS name (rude comment)

Littlebittosunshine · 06/03/2025 19:16

My DS is13. Never had any worries about his name before now.
But yesterday at work I had a rather rude comment from a customer ( I'm a garden/landscaper so have a chat with them here and there) this customer in particular im not a huge fan of. Fine in terms of work but just talks non stop only about herself and likes to mention how wealthy she is. But yesterday my colleague mentioned my son in conversation by name. And she gasped and said "oh how awful, who would name their child such a thing, eugh sounds like a bad omen"
I am now concerned there are lots of people who think this but have just never said it to my face before.
His name is Jonah.
I'm aware it has meaning in the bible to Jonah and the whale but I'm not religious and named him after a rugby player.
YABU his name is fine. YNBU she's just rude.
Be honest please.

Jonah is a lovely name.

Jonah Hill is an famous actor

Jonah Lomu is an incredible Rubgy player

Ignore your client. She is rude and it frankly says far more about her and her lack of class than she realises.

zingally · 06/03/2025 20:46

Unless she's from a seafaring background, I can't see the issue.

Historically, a Jonah was someone who bought bad luck to a ship.

SpaceChocolatel · 06/03/2025 20:49

She sounds like an insufferable idiot. Jonah is a perfectly nice name.

AlleyRose · 06/03/2025 20:50

Absolutely LOVE that name. It sounds kind and reliable - I know that sounds ridiculous but that's how my brain works.

Your client, on the other hand, sounds like a dick.

nodramaplz · 06/03/2025 20:55

There will always be someone with something to say about something x

FlannelandPuce · 06/03/2025 20:55

Jonah is a lovely name, and have voted you are being unreasonable as, their is absolutely no issue with the name and your client is just rude!!

lifeonmars100 · 06/03/2025 20:57

It's a lovely name and that woman is very rude.

Wellthisisnotfun · 06/03/2025 20:58

Simplynotsimple · 06/03/2025 20:15

No, I suspect that it’s being pronounced the anglicised way rather than the original pronunciation. My bad, I’m used to it being said in its traditional way, ‘dillan’ does rhyme with villain.

How do you pronounce Dylan?

Simplynotsimple · 06/03/2025 20:59

Wellthisisnotfun · 06/03/2025 20:58

How do you pronounce Dylan?

It’s pronounced Duh-lan.

She knows the ending of the story right? You know, where Jonah survives the whole whale thing and is considered one of the biblical heroes by many Christians.

My thoughts too. Being eaten by a whale and surviving is pretty impressive! (Presumably not possible!)

Serpentstooth · 06/03/2025 21:01

She's nuts, that's a perfectly acceptable name and only someone ignorant and ungracious would suggest differently. Friend named her son an old, not commonly heard, Irish name. The following year, the film The Omen was released. Now that's a name to avoid since then.

Lottie6712 · 06/03/2025 21:04

Lovely name!

Carodebalo · 06/03/2025 21:07

Jonah is a lovely name! She was extremely rude, please don't let it get to you.

Manchesterbythesea · 06/03/2025 21:07

It’s a nice name. Pass no remarks on the silly cow.

BatchCookBabe · 06/03/2025 21:08

WTF? What is wrong with Jonah? Ignore her OP. Not like you called him Satan!

BatchCookBabe · 06/03/2025 21:10

Simplynotsimple · 06/03/2025 20:59

It’s pronounced Duh-lan.

Never heard it pronounced that way.

Balloonhearts · 06/03/2025 21:11

Do people in this day and age believe in omens? Strange woman. Jonah is a lovely name.

CustardySergeant · 06/03/2025 21:11

Simplynotsimple · 06/03/2025 20:59

It’s pronounced Duh-lan.

Do you say Bob Duh-lan?

MrsTerryPratchett · 06/03/2025 21:12

Arglefraster · 06/03/2025 19:21

Rude woman. Ignore!

I would only think of the amazing Jonah Lomu.

Quite.

Wonderful man and a wonderful rugby player I may have had a little crush.

mathanxiety · 06/03/2025 21:13

Totototo · 06/03/2025 19:34

She’s probably three bottles of wine down by this point. Ignore her. Jonah is a lovely name.

Haha, this.

Jonah is a great name.

Hankunamatata · 06/03/2025 21:13

Please tell her his middle name is Lucifer 😂

Simplynotsimple · 06/03/2025 21:16

CustardySergeant · 06/03/2025 21:11

Do you say Bob Duh-lan?

I read it like that, his name rarely comes about enough for me to have thought about it to be honest. Like I will always read the name Rhys as its original pronunciation, not Reece.

fiorentina · 06/03/2025 21:17

Before a friend called her DC Jonah, I didn’t know it had another meaning - DH pointed out it means a person who carries bad luck/a jinx. I guess it depends if that’s a phrase someone uses.

It is still rude of your client!

Mumtobabyhavoc · 06/03/2025 21:19

She must have been referring to this (scroll to cultural influence):

But, she was rude none the less.
