To be worried about DS name (rude comment)

Littlebittosunshine · 06/03/2025 19:16

My DS is13. Never had any worries about his name before now.
But yesterday at work I had a rather rude comment from a customer ( I'm a garden/landscaper so have a chat with them here and there) this customer in particular im not a huge fan of. Fine in terms of work but just talks non stop only about herself and likes to mention how wealthy she is. But yesterday my colleague mentioned my son in conversation by name. And she gasped and said "oh how awful, who would name their child such a thing, eugh sounds like a bad omen"
I am now concerned there are lots of people who think this but have just never said it to my face before.
His name is Jonah.
I'm aware it has meaning in the bible to Jonah and the whale but I'm not religious and named him after a rugby player.
YABU his name is fine. YNBU she's just rude.
Be honest please.

I absolutely love Jonah. Classic but not really common. It was on my list for DS1 but DH said he would be called Jonah Boner so vetoed 🙄 I’m still annoyed about it as I think he’s just ridiculous and normal people wouldn’t think that. Never heard of it being an ominous name either,

Jonah boner? Is you DH 5? 😂😂😂
(fwiw Jonah bonah is much better) 🤭

blackpear · 06/03/2025 21:27

It’s a beautiful name. She is rude and ridiculous.

RollerSkateLikePeggy · 06/03/2025 21:27

One of my favourite names. She was very rude.

icanatilldancetowhigfield · 06/03/2025 21:29

Oh it's a fantastic name!

Squigglewigglediggle · 06/03/2025 21:37

Lovely name - in fact it's my youngests middle name!

RafaFan · 06/03/2025 21:42

Ignore her. Just about any perfectly normal name can have negative connotations if somebody wants to make it so e.g. Karen, Cassandra, Amber, Alexa...

I love your reason for giving him the name ...is his middle name Zinzan?

FiveBarGate · 06/03/2025 21:43

Is she from a fishing community? I would see it as bearer of bad luck and so it's not a name I'd choose although the name itself is perfectly nice sounding.

If she's been brought up in this kind of area it makes more sense though she shouldn't have said it out loud.

garlictwist · 06/03/2025 21:45

Bit pointless to be worried about it. The horse has kind of bolted on that one given he's 12. It doesn't really matter if his name is nice or or not as tbh as it's entirely subjective.

greenveneer · 07/03/2025 07:08

It's a very cool name, she is rude and I'd sack her as a client. I think you should work on your self-confidence as you doubted your name choice instead of recognising her poor manners.

RochelleGoyle · 07/03/2025 07:11

It's a lovely name OP and your customer is rude and thoughtless.

MagentaRavioli · 07/03/2025 07:15

It’s a beautiful name and the bible story is a story of human redemption, so I don’t understand what there is to criticise! Even your ds decides to pick a fight with a deity at sea then the precedent is for whale-based transportation to the mainland and a successful future!

Zoec1975 · 07/03/2025 18:29

Jonah is a lovely name.that woman is just goddamn rude.ignore

UpTheLaganInABubble1 · 07/03/2025 18:31

She has terrible manners and is rude. Jonah is a lovely name

RavenhairedRachel · 07/03/2025 19:22

I love the name Jonah

Giggorata · 07/03/2025 20:00

I like it. She sounds like a fool.

Nomorechipsforme · 07/03/2025 20:06

If you are UK based, a Jonah in the dictionary "is a person believed to bring bad luck to those around him; jinx" and it was often used as a slang term, if the person is from the older generation this is what they may have associated it too, but I would not pay it much mind, it is a lovely name and the use of Jonah as slang terminology is not very common today.

Serendipawtous · 07/03/2025 20:11

Also not sure how to vote; the name is fine AND your customer is rude!

Winter2020 · 07/03/2025 20:20

Yes give up on the poll.
There is nothing wrong with your son's name. Some people are just gobby x

Trishthedish · 07/03/2025 20:32

Arglefraster · 06/03/2025 19:21

Rude woman. Ignore!

I would only think of the amazing Jonah Lomu.

Me too. Jonah is a great name

Ilovecleaning · 07/03/2025 20:39

She is just ill- mannered. Obviously never been taught that it is rude to make unsolicited and derogatory about people’s names, where they live, their appearance etc. Lack of basic manners.

ThingsPeopleDo · 07/03/2025 22:50

Jonah selfishly refused God's commission to preach in the great city of Nineveh. God sent a great sea creature to rescue him from drowning and show how much He valued Jonah. Jonah got over himself and preached with amazing results.

It's a great name. Anybody criticising it shows ignorance of the Bible and is best ignored.

pollymere · 08/03/2025 00:32

Teachers rate names based on students...

Jonah = Lovely, intelligent, hardworking.

allmymonkeys · 08/03/2025 00:43

Not so much rude as crashingly tactless. I can't imagine what she was thinking when she blurted that out - did she not realise that DS is your son, or something?

JMSA · 08/03/2025 00:44

I read the bad omen comment and assumed he was called Damian Grin

Jonah is a nice name and she's a twat.

Pussygaloregalapagos · 08/03/2025 00:49

If the middle name isn’t Damian am sure is ok!
