To be worried about DS name (rude comment)

Littlebittosunshine · 06/03/2025 19:16

My DS is13. Never had any worries about his name before now.
But yesterday at work I had a rather rude comment from a customer ( I'm a garden/landscaper so have a chat with them here and there) this customer in particular im not a huge fan of. Fine in terms of work but just talks non stop only about herself and likes to mention how wealthy she is. But yesterday my colleague mentioned my son in conversation by name. And she gasped and said "oh how awful, who would name their child such a thing, eugh sounds like a bad omen"
I am now concerned there are lots of people who think this but have just never said it to my face before.
His name is Jonah.
I'm aware it has meaning in the bible to Jonah and the whale but I'm not religious and named him after a rugby player.
YABU his name is fine. YNBU she's just rude.
Be honest please.

Oh I was desperate to call my DS Jonah but ex DH vetoed it because he’s a sailor and at sea a ‘Jonah’ is bad luck. But v v niche reference and ridiculous as Jonah is a beautiful name!

Zeroperspective · 06/03/2025 20:05

I got utterly confused with the voting so basically sod the vote, the name is fine and she's a rude bitch

FilthyforFirth · 06/03/2025 20:06

Jonah is a great name, don't give it a second thought!

GreenClock · 06/03/2025 20:08

I immediately think Lomu, and I’m not even much of a rugby fan!

She is talking rubbish OP.

CowboyJoanna · 06/03/2025 20:10

Its a beautiful name, if I had another boy that's what I'd call him. YANBU.

My son is called Noah and he hasnt built an ark. My middle daughter is an Eve and she is yet to have eaten forbidden fruitGrin

diddl · 06/03/2025 20:10

I thought that to "be a Jonah" was a well known phrase tbh.

Almost named my son Jonah after Jonah Lomu.

Ha ha, we considered calling my oldest son Logan but I just couldn’t because we were moving to australia & all I could think about was him getting called Logan the Bogan.

instead we named him Dylan. We sometimes jokingly call him Dylan the Villian. He had a teacher who called him Dylie.

Dylan doesn’t rhyme will villain?

Jonah is a lovely name @Littlebittosunshine . Honestly I thought you were going to say his name was Damien with the omen link…

LimesOfBronze · 06/03/2025 20:11

She knows the ending of the story right? You know, where Jonah survives the whole whale thing and is considered one of the biblical heroes by many Christians.

pinkdelight · 06/03/2025 20:11

Not RTFT and I like the name Jonah but there was a James Herbert book called The Jonah that had a grim cover with a fetus on it if memory serves so I wonder if she'd seen that so associates the name with that horror. Which is legit for her but has no bearing on the name in general so I wouldn't pay it any mind.

Hate to break it to you but you're either pronouncing Dylan or villain wrong

No, I suspect that it’s being pronounced the anglicised way rather than the original pronunciation. My bad, I’m used to it being said in its traditional way, ‘dillan’ does rhyme with villain.

NotSoFar · 06/03/2025 20:19

Jonah is a nice, perfectly ordinary name. Your customer is an idiot who thinks there’s no need to be polite about staff’s children’s names.

ClarasSisters · 06/03/2025 20:20

She's a dick. His name is fab.

Thank you. I thought so too and he is very gentle it fits him perfectly 😊

I've never heard about the omen thing?
Jonah is a lovely name - classic but not overused. I'm surprised it's not more common as it's gorgeous!

TiredEyes25 · 06/03/2025 20:25

Normal name , she's a dick

CraneBeak · 06/03/2025 20:25

Spectacularly rude woman. It's a lovely name! And perfectly ordinary, not in any way a crazy or ominous name.

ColdCottage · 06/03/2025 20:26

How odd. It's a lovely name.

Thedogscollar · 06/03/2025 20:29

God some people are so bloody rude.
It's a lovely name.
Ignore the rude woman.

Orangeoranges42 · 06/03/2025 20:32

I don’t understand your poll says the same thing.
I think I’m probably quite critical of names in general and Jonah is lovely.

ClassicStripe · 06/03/2025 20:33

Personally I don’t like the name but she was rude to comment.

Maray1967 · 06/03/2025 20:38

Hardly anybody would think of Jonah as a bad omen for sailors based on the bible story. If most people thought about what bible names might imply, no one would ever call their daughter Leah, which I think is a lovely name - as is Jonah. And yes, most people would think of Jonah Lomu.

Birch101 · 06/03/2025 20:39

I like the name, don't know any religious connotations but when I was growing up it meant having no mates, Jonah loner, never met anyone with the name though

CheeseyOnionPie · 06/03/2025 20:42

I hear Jonah and think nothing out of the ordinary. It’s lovely name. If pressed I might remember the rugby player!

schoolsoutforever · 06/03/2025 20:42

It's a nice name and not too common. Some people want to comment on other people's choices - just ignore
