To be worried about DS name (rude comment)

Littlebittosunshine · 06/03/2025 19:16

My DS is13. Never had any worries about his name before now.
But yesterday at work I had a rather rude comment from a customer ( I'm a garden/landscaper so have a chat with them here and there) this customer in particular im not a huge fan of. Fine in terms of work but just talks non stop only about herself and likes to mention how wealthy she is. But yesterday my colleague mentioned my son in conversation by name. And she gasped and said "oh how awful, who would name their child such a thing, eugh sounds like a bad omen"
I am now concerned there are lots of people who think this but have just never said it to my face before.
His name is Jonah.
I'm aware it has meaning in the bible to Jonah and the whale but I'm not religious and named him after a rugby player.
YABU his name is fine. YNBU she's just rude.
Be honest please.

Sorry after a few comments I've realised I've done the poll wrong. YABU she's just rude YABU it's not a nice name.

Still wrong 😆

TroysMammy · 06/03/2025 19:33

Now the name Damien is a bad omen 😉.

Flopsy145 · 06/03/2025 19:34

Maybe she's got confused with Judas, still a very rude comment, but I've never heard Jonah to be anything negative!

Totototo · 06/03/2025 19:34

She’s probably three bottles of wine down by this point. Ignore her. Jonah is a lovely name.

Catza · 06/03/2025 19:34

So what if many people think it? You can't police people's thoughts. You like the name your son likes the name. What's the problem if people think it's bad (and it isn't)?

Yoyokitten · 06/03/2025 19:35

Thank god for an OP who actually tells us the name without creating 48 pages of questions from frustrated mumsnetters.
Thank you.
Jonah is a lovely name and she's shockingly rude.
Ignore her 😀

fruitpastille · 06/03/2025 19:35

I've only heard it as a sailors superstition - I don't think most people would know this. It's a lovely name and one I nearly chose. Maybe she's wealthy but she's obviously not well mannered.

HaddyAbrams · 06/03/2025 19:36

I think it's a lovely name. Maybe just don't take him out to sea just in case Wink

I think maybe you mean

YABU - the name is a bad omen
YANBU - it’s a lovely name and she was rude

Anyway, whatever you meant I voted YANBU because you’re not being unreasonable. She was rude 😂

Branleuse · 06/03/2025 19:38

Hes almost certainly fated to be eaten by a giant whale now OP. What were you thinking?? Tempting fate like that.

Littlebittosunshine · 06/03/2025 19:40

My updated poll was still wrong 🤦‍♀️so I'm just gonna give up on that. Its been a long day 😂

I thought it was going to be Damien and I would still say it’s fine.

Whiskeyandkittens · 06/03/2025 19:18

Not sure how to vote, as his name is fine AND she's just rude!

Haha same!! Agree both - name is fine and she is rude.

PonyPatter44 · 06/03/2025 19:46

It's a great name, especially with the link to the legend that was Jonah Lomu (RIP). However for me it also sets off a terrible earworm of "Jonahman Jazz" which is some strange little comedy operetta about Jonah that we did at school.

"Go down, Jonah, deep in the ocean, Go down, Jonah, far from the shore"...🫠

Peaceandquietandacuppa · 06/03/2025 19:46

I thought you were going to say Adolf or something. What a weird thing to say, Jonah is a lovely name.

Sammysquiz · 06/03/2025 19:49

It’s a lovely name, and she is incredibly rude.

Yes, it was traditionally a bad omen name, but that’s an old superstition which is very much dying out. I remember my granny saying it when we considered it as a name for DS, but - as you can tell from the comments on here - not many people have heard of that superstition. I think the phrase ‘don’t be a Jonah’ meant ‘don’t put a downer on things’ but it’s not in common parlance any more.

Every name has a negative connotation if you look hard enough!

legalseagull · 06/03/2025 19:50

They're ridiculous. It's just a character in a story not some magical omen.

Horses7 · 06/03/2025 19:51

Great name - forget her.

Frostynoman · 06/03/2025 19:53

I thought you were going to say it was Damien.. Yes, it’s a niche cuss and it is a lovely name
