To think Britain should have nothing to do with this war

Foodtimeisit · 01/03/2025 12:54

After yesterday's news, Britain shouldn't be the one funding war as USA has said they are out now. There's no chance Britain can fight this war alone with Ukraine against Russia.
Since this war started, our life has only become miserable with CoL increase.
AIBU to think we shouldn't have anything to do this war and we should fix our own problems first before giving away our tax money?

So what do you think will happen if we give in to Russia on Ukraine?

That Putin will suddenly become a gentle and benevolent pacifist?

Or that he will look to the next country to invade?

I wonder if there are any lessons from history we could learn here....

Hercules12 · 01/03/2025 12:59

Do you know why we give money? I’m not sure you do…

sahmtoosen · 01/03/2025 13:01

there will be immense pressure on the UK to scale back support from the US. Trump and Vance are to Putin what flotsam and jetsam are to Ursula . The US will warn us off I expect

ApolloandDaphne · 01/03/2025 13:02

Of course we need to support Ukraine. Europe needs to show a united front against Russia.

madamweb · 01/03/2025 13:02

Also, Russia linked cyber hackers are constantly attacking our public bodies etc already. We are already essentially "at war"

Theunamedcat · 01/03/2025 13:02

You realise Trump is aggravating the situation? He has his own agenda he will fight against us to get what he wants he isnt out of anything he is right up to his depends in it

And by trump you mean Musk, of course.

AgnesX · 01/03/2025 13:03

Do you know any 20th century history (especially mid century....) at all?

Think about it and then think about your question.

Anonym00se · 01/03/2025 13:04

You do realise that we’re not giving arms to Ukraine to be kind and benevolent. They’re literally being used to hold off a Russian invasion of Europe. They are the sacrificial lamb. We need to stand firmly together with Europe, and do whatever we can to keep Putin at bay.

NotTheDebtDoctorWithTheHungryScalpel · 01/03/2025 13:05

Do you really think if we stop giving money that the COL will improve and the repercussions of the war won't affect the UK at all?

Deluded. Take a few history lessons and see what happens.

Pastalina · 01/03/2025 13:06

I was also going to tell OP to get some history lessons.
Our tax money…🙄

I'm disheartened that some people have no understanding of this.

Liv999 · 01/03/2025 13:07

The whole of Europe needs to be united and pull together behind Ukraine

bookworm14 · 01/03/2025 13:08

Keep planting that astroturf - it’s never going to grow.

I disagree . I think Putin only wants Ukraine. It’s clearly always been about the natural resources and he thought it would be easy as Zelensky isn’t an experienced politician or leader. I think a lot of countries backing Ukraine were hoping to help and get something in return (access again to those natural resources) but now it’s gone on so long that Trump has steamrollered in and made it clear what it’s always been about, thought he could get it sorted asap and is now losing his temper as he can’t. He will be warning us off next and telling any country that backs Ukraine that they are also going to be responsible for WW3

countrygirl99 · 01/03/2025 13:08

Luckily most Brits can remember what happens when you appease an aggressive, territory hungry dictator. Last one reached the French coast and bombed the UK.

coldandfrostymorning23 · 01/03/2025 13:09

Putting aside the moral arguments, and the lessons of history for a moment and taking your post on face value

  • the UK would not be fighting this war alone with Ukraine. Most EU nations will continue to support Ukraine because they know full well that if Putin succeeds they will be next. Together these economies dwarf that of Russia.
  • Increasing defence spending will create jobs and stimulate growth and help alleviate the cost of living crisis.

No. Putin has previously indicated he wants to get back to the borders of the old Russian empire. So that includes not only the Baltic states and Poland but Finland as well.

You may think that Putin only wants Ukraine but Putin himself is crystal clear about wanting to recreate the former Soviet Union. So I think I will go with Putin on tht one.

sahmtoosen · 01/03/2025 13:13

I think he has just said it to create the fear that he will go further than Ukraine but that he has no real intention of doing so

Foodtimeisit · 01/03/2025 13:13

I didn't realise there are so many war hungry people here.
I think the solution should be diplomatic negotiations and peace.

So why isn't Trump gaslighting and shouting at Putin to force him to negotiate?

Good luck negotiating with a dictator. Putin INVADED a peaceful country, claiming an ancient right over their land - sound familiar?
Appeasement didn’t work before and it won’t work again.

Do you think you're the only one who thinks diplomatic negotiations and peace would be the best outcome, and everyone else is simply enjoying the war?

I mean you are right in some respects of course- why don’t you pop over to the Middle East and mention that to the Israelis too.
