To think Britain should have nothing to do with this war

Foodtimeisit · 01/03/2025 12:54

After yesterday's news, Britain shouldn't be the one funding war as USA has said they are out now. There's no chance Britain can fight this war alone with Ukraine against Russia.
Since this war started, our life has only become miserable with CoL increase.
AIBU to think we shouldn't have anything to do this war and we should fix our own problems first before giving away our tax money?

OP could well be an American which would explain how clueless they appear to be. My US colleague once spent a good 10 minutes arguing with me that WW2 was 1941-1945…

Just another example of casual prejudice against Americans. FFS. There are plenty of uneducated native Brits.

JazzyJelly · 01/03/2025 13:44

Chamberlain thought so too.

I didn't realise there are so many war hungry people here.
I think the solution should be diplomatic negotiations and peace.

Did you watch the meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy? They tried this already and Russia broke the agreement.

dottiehens · 01/03/2025 13:46

Regardless of your posture. Where are be getting the money for the war? 60 percent of the U.K. is in some sort of benefits? Most people would say happy to pay more in taxes but we know most are not even net contributors.

I am pretty familiar with European history and how it goes for the common people. Solution should be world peace not war.

😂 what, are you a hippy or something?!

Meanwhile, in the real world.....

avillage · 01/03/2025 13:47

It's the same way when Russia tried to invade Afghanistan and Pakistan had to also get involved in the war to stop them coming to our door step. UK needs to step up to stop Russia in Ukraine as well.

Donttellempike · 01/03/2025 13:47

We are a fiat currency nation . Look it up

MaggieBsBoat · 01/03/2025 13:48

You can’t „do diplomacy“ with a warmonger. Or bullies.

good luck OP.

This is absolutely true. But it is the Americans that have elected a bullying fuckwit as their president, so some anger with them is probably inevitable at the moment.

Of course, there will be Americans that are horrified by Trump's behaviour, but sadly, they are not very visible or vocal at the moment.

And yet look at what's leading their country.

Whatever makes you think that people want war??

Something along the lines of the Budapest Memorandum in which Ukraine gave up its nuclear weapons in return for peace guarantees you mean?

Yes, exactly. I think the OP might not know their modern history as well as they think.

and to get peace you need to have power so that other's cannot invade you. Why on earth you think all these countries who have hostile neighbours have these armed parades? Why do countries have nuclear weapons?

Calm down! I totally agree, but then again I won't give 1p of my money to foreign causes, overall. I only contribute to UK-focussed local charities, really local ones. I only buy the Big Issue from native sellers, on principle. I am fine with the UK being friends of Saudis, they buy our armaments, I think it is vile we get involved in changing governments be it by peaceful means (colour revolutions) or war (Iraq) - if they want women's rights and gender rights, let them do it themselves. Same about Ukraine. I genuinely don't have the capacity to care for any cause that is non-UK. I resent any foreign aid. I think those who are for it, should pay for it individually. So many people think the same, but they are compelled to virtue-signal, either because of their careers or their so-called friends. Briefly, I resent every penny, never mind million. spent on foreign aid, Ukraine included, whilst our own suffer.

On the face of it I agree with things like charity begins at home - get your house in order before looking at others etc etc etc But the world isn't that simple—we are not a self sufficient independent island. What happens abroad affects us in the UK. Russia’s invasion of Ukraine threatens European security, disrupts global economies, and sets a dangerous precedent. If we don’t support Ukraine the message Russia and other such governments (e.g China) gets is invade and take what you want, the world becomes more unstable, which will have consequences for the UK too. Foreign aid and defense spending aren’t just charity; they’re strategic investments in a more stable world—one where we’re less likely to face bigger crises at home.

These years are Europes good years. Once the fight over precious metals are over we have the issues of environmental refugees and conflict over access to water to come :(

528htz · 01/03/2025 13:53

Pretty poor attempt op.

When World War Two began is really a matter of perspective. Yes, the most commonly used date is September 1939, but if you were Czech or Chinese the war had already very much begun before then. It’s a very Anglo-centric date for the start of the war really.

Times like this I wonder what gets taught in History lessons at school. Go read up on European History 1925-1939

I think the OP must have missed those classes.

kistanbul · 01/03/2025 13:56

There are a lot of people who just seem to say Well, if I was in charge I’d just have world peace.

Great idea. Really excellent. Just talk me through how we get from today to world peace given Putin’s history of reneging on international agreements.

No one in their right mind is war hungry but Putin invaded Ukraine . He won’t stop there, his intentions are pretty clear.

JHound · 01/03/2025 13:58

People like you are tiring.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 01/03/2025 13:59

The Ukraine war has already damaged Putin’s credibility. Gone are the days when the Soviet tanks could roll in and take over another country in a matter of days. Putin will not stop until he either has capitulation or he is forced to.
The EU and the U.K. has no option but to show strength now. No Russian politician will publicly respect a softly softly approach. They will all be jockeying for position behind Putin so won’t show weakness. Putin is not young and his health is suspect so domestic Russian politics is a significant factor behind this.

Do you approach Big Issue sellers to ask about their ethnicity before you bestow your money on them?

Applesonthelawn · 01/03/2025 14:00

I think it's utterly disgusting that Trump thinks he can benefit from a country who has been invaded and is fighting to the death to defend their freedom. Wars are not fought so that he can pick over the winnings like a vulture by "making a deal" on Ukraine's rare earth. Wars are fought on principle to defend freedom, and at a point early enough to avoid it being you next in line. I'm not even American and I am ashamed of the man. I know most Americans are principled people though.
It's also disgusting the way he is re-writing history - that was an utter shit show in the Oval Office last week.

Puts our government, not to mention King Charles, in an awkward position now.

Mischance · 01/03/2025 14:00

Britain shouldn't be the one funding war - it isn't the only one and never will be.
