To be disgusted at the talks between Russia and the US

SunnyDayInFeb · 17/02/2025 08:58

So Russia and the US are meeting in Saudia Arabia to carve up Ukraine.

And Ukraine, whose people have been fighting and dying since their country was invaded, haven't even been invited to the table.

It's like we are back in the 19th century with the European colonial powers drawing lines on a map to divide Africa between them.

Except who wanted to invade Russia

bemoresloth · 18/02/2025 17:31

Russia not accepting NATO or other peacekeeping forces in Ukraine doesn't bode well about them observing any 'peace' agreement.

TempestTost · 18/02/2025 17:19

Russia will never accept NATO membership for Ukraine and frankly they'd be stupid to do so. No one wants their enemies right on their borders.

The fact that it was under discussion was seen as a provocation in itself.

You don't discard that card straight away in negotiations though.

Russian officials are overjoyed by the poor levels of negotiations. Its one thing to end the war, another to give everything away, that's not even yours

Does anyone think they will keep any "peace" agreement in any situation unless forced?

BIossomtoes · 18/02/2025 17:54

I can’t see how any peace agreement could be reliable with Putin involved. That’s why Poland is concentrating its military power on protecting its border.

As U.S. and Putin negotiate, intel shows he's not interested 'in a real peace deal,' sources say

Intelligence suggests Russian President Vladimir Putin is going through the motions and still thinks he can eventually control all of Ukraine, the sources told NBC News.

Is anyone remotely surprised?

BIossomtoes · 18/02/2025 20:17

Is anyone remotely surprised?

Not at all.

He could agree to stop and keep existing ceised land and then attack again next month with peacekeeping forces stuck in the middle of the battle. Trump doesn't care, he just wants to say he ended the war, at what cost, he cares not.

AlternativeView · 18/02/2025 20:25

@bemoresloth interesting so he does want all of Ukraine.

So ASAP we need to make sure there is enough arsenal in Ukraine to make him think again

AlternativeView · 18/02/2025 20:29

@ImmediateReaction when putin massed on the border of Ukraine, what was there to meet him?
Did any tanks rally from Ukraine?
As far as I recall it was some dear old ladies with bayonets being trained up.
Zelensky never got the planes he wanted.
The moment a peace is declared a proper defence can be flooded in.

Putin is hardly winning now but because he's a dictator and his people are terrified of him he can starve them all to death to keep going here because he can.

BIossomtoes · 18/02/2025 20:32

I was going to say no but now I am not so sure

Getoff · 18/02/2025 21:03

Apologies if this has been said, but after reading a lot of the thread, I'm tired of the posters who think USA are sole funders of Ukraine and can impose a peace deal. USA pulling financial support will halve it, the rest is coming from Europe. Ukraine can continue and win, with only European support. It will take a lot longer and far more will die, but it is possible. USA will happily sell weapons if Europe pays for them. Europe does also make weapons. Europe has the financial capacity to support war indefinitely, while Russia is on the brink of collapse, economically.

Catsandcheese · 18/02/2025 21:08

So Ukraine being in or out of Nato because Putin doesn't want Nato on his doorstep is a lie.
Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania were admitted in 2022
Finland joined in 2023.
Admittedly all since the start of this atrocious war, but he already has Nato on his doorstep so he can't object to Ukraine.

@Getoff you are absolutely correct.

Cupcakes2035 · 18/02/2025 10:21

but then without the us etc russia would now have them ?

Yes but why should America financially gain from that?! Did Churchill say to France if you want us to get rid of the Nazis in France you need to handed over all your lucrative resources for decades to come?! No we did it because it was the right bloody thing to do , not make some business deal out of it to profit us!

because its business , otherwise you could apply that logic to most things in life, with reguards to france etc whos to say what deals were made,

AlternativeView · 18/02/2025 21:19

If Russia won't accept any form of peace keepers in Ukraine then I guess all bets will be off.

But it is probably a counter negotiation.

Absolutely nothing will happen re ending the war without Ukraine being 100 per cent protected.

Thinking just like trump there! In Europe being ally used to mean something until trump

Cupcakes2035 · 18/02/2025 21:19

Unlike occupied France in WWII, Ukraine is a sovereign state negotiating deals with the West.

whatwouldyoudoifisangoutofkey · 18/02/2025 21:20

@Getoff I think US give /gave a lot of support.

To be disgusted at the talks between Russia and the US
Cupcakes2035 · 18/02/2025 21:21

history suggests that major powers often seek strategic returns on military assistance. Lend-Lease in WWII, for example, ensured the U.S. retained influence over post-war Europe.

AlternativeView · 18/02/2025 21:21

I've just seen a clip of Trump in his last stint saying, Europe must be independent and not rely on Russian fuel and the German contingent are literally laughing and smirking at him.
Germany is supposed to be the power house of Europe! They laughed at him.

We know he's petulant and emotional.

Interesting that Japan is sending more than France and Spain isn't even there.
If I was Spain and Italy and France I'd be very worried about a Russian plundering invasion I'm surprised they won't spend more.

I wonder why Japan is so invested.
