And find it really off-putting when otherwise interesting and entertaining youtube videos are tagged with this. Makes me not want to watch/listen to them.

Agree, I don't understand why it's so popular it makes me feel itchy !
I'm also baffled by unboxing videos.

YABU! ASMR is amazing.

Eenameenadeeka · 02/02/2025 20:11

I hate it too

YANBU it makes my eardrums feel itchy, the whispering ones make me want to smack whoever is doing it 😂but obviously some people must like it or they wouldn't make them

Comedycook · 02/02/2025 20:13

It's repulsive....and why do so many of the people who make these videos feel the need to pull their sleeves so far down over their knuckles...?

Thirteenblackcat · 02/02/2025 20:14

I am not sure if it’s the same thing but I hate the nail tapping and finger waggling. Makes me want to throw my phone

Leilanii · 02/02/2025 20:15

If you don't like it, you don't have to watch it. I quite like soft spoken or whisper ASMR. What I don't like are those sexualised ones <shudder>

DinaofCloud9 · 02/02/2025 20:16

I love the nail scratching on the mic ones but hate the way it's become so sexualised now.

Ones with only a few followers tend to be better imo.

Chroniclesofstress · 02/02/2025 20:17

I don’t quite get it🫠

Me too. God, the nail tapping

TemporaryPosition · 02/02/2025 20:18

But the purpose of the video is not ASMR, it might be about historical needlework techniques. And I want to know about that but then the video is broken into chapters some entitled ASMR, and then I just find it so distracting, I become hyperspace of very little saliva sound that I otherwise wouldn't notice and can't help but think of the people that might just be watching it for some weird thrill 🤢

I like some ASMR, I find it pleasantly hypnotic.

Unfortunately a lot of it seems to be attractive and scantily dressed young women being mildly suggestive. I don't know why so much of it is aimed at a pervy male audience, because I feel like that isn't really the main ASMR market 🤷🏻.

Mehmeh22 · 02/02/2025 20:19

I've found my people.

It makes me rage.

Comedycook · 02/02/2025 20:22

The make up and skin care ones...why do they tap the bottles and jars...then the annoying hands under the chin once it's done...arrrggghhhh

ruethewhirl · 02/02/2025 20:22

YANBU, ASMR is very subjective. Personally I love certain types of ASMR and find them helpful for relaxation, but some of the more popular triggers creep me out - tapping drives me mad, and whispering creeps me out. Ditto those saliva sounds you mentioned.

MrsCapGarland · 02/02/2025 20:25

I heard a program on radio 4 several years ago about ASMR and thought at last - I have an explanation for an experience I’ve never been able to describe to anyone who doesn’t have it. Most of the whispering YouTube stuff does nothing for me. I get pleasurable waves spreading up my skull from watching, live or on video, people very gently doing something incredibly detailed or skilful. I wish I could be more clear but it’s very real, trust me.

MrsJHernandez · 02/02/2025 20:27

Its so creepy. Like, what the fuck are you doing, you utter weirdo?!

It's more likely to anger me than calm me!

DeffoNeedANameChange · 02/02/2025 20:29

Some people have gorgeous whisper voices - I can listen to that no problem. But anything to do with nails or eating - bleurgh.

That said, I can listen to animals eating for hours. Do you think there's much of a market for videos of horses munching hay? Maybe mine could finally start paying their own vet bills......

BarbaraHoward · 02/02/2025 20:30

I love the ones where they make candies. Or mix colours of paint.

Well that's because you don't understand what asmr is if you describe it as a weird thrill. Unfortunately some people do not experience the same sensations from ASMR so can't understand that's its simply a relaxation tool. And a very effective one too if you experience it. Please don't attempt to shame people who enjoy it.

I'm happy to send you a video of my cat slurping up her food like an 80 year old with no teeth 😆

Guinea pigs crunching bell peppers! The best sound

The ASMR is entirely coincidental in those videos - it provides an incredibly thin veil for everyone involved to pretend not to understand what it's actually about.

MrsCapGarland · 02/02/2025 20:37

I don’t think you can make it happen on purpose. You are emotionally or intellectually moved in a way you can’t control but that has a physical effect. You recognise the triggers and can therefore increase the likelihood of the sensation. It’s so warm and genuinely lovely. All headache stress is resolved.
