To find ASMR really disgusting

And find it really off-putting when otherwise interesting and entertaining youtube videos are tagged with this. Makes me not want to watch/listen to them.

In my experience, anything designed with ASMR in mind doesn't really work - you need to encounter it unexpectedly. For me it can be aural or visual, and I first became aware of it as a child, although it didn't have a name then and I assumed it only happened to me. We were watching a film and there was a really long sequence of someone cracking a safe - the small movements and sounds triggered it. The best one ever was when I was on a train next to someone reading a document in braille. Music can do it as well - improvised jazz, or anything percussive is very powerful for me.

I agree with the OP though, and hate that it has become something slightly pervy in some contexts.

MrsCapGarland · 02/02/2025 21:06

Yup. You either understand the physical reaction to an emotional experience or you don’t. My first experience was at around 8 years old and I quickly worked out what led to these experiences.

Cherrytreat · 02/02/2025 21:08

@mrsclapgarland, that is exactly what I get. I've never watched an ASMR video, but I experience it when listening to others talk sometimes, especially if they're just talking on the phone in the same room as me.

I can remember listening to my English teacher talk and feeling the same tingly, wave like comfortable feeling. She seemed pretty ancient when I was 14 and the subject really didn't interest me at the time, so definitely nothing tantalising or sexual whatsoever. Just a contentment bubble, a massage for the brain

I find it when listening to certain voices on podcasts too. I'm not sure it can be forced in an amsr video, they don't sound great to me and it's a shame it's mixed in sexual pleasure, because I really think it's separate to that.

I can't help finding it icky that people listen to certain things, not for the content but for the physical sensations it induces.

I agree with other posters in that you don’t understand the term.

MrsCapGarland · 02/02/2025 21:12

😆. You get it. You really understand this sensation.

Butchyrestingface · 02/02/2025 21:13

I quite like it, done well.

mumda · 02/02/2025 21:13
This guy has a lovely channel of just five videos. They're beautiful and softly narrated in a way that struck me as being therapeutic. Fish tanks. But beautiful and inspiring and relaxing and so satisfying to watch. Not asmr but really relaxing.

I have no idea what this is? Can someone give a brief synopsis?

ASMR is the name of the physical response some people get to certain audio or visual cues. It is often described as "tingles" and that's how I experience it too, that tingly feeling going up my spine, the back of my neck and back of my head. It's not at all sexual, although I do think some "influencers" have tried to sexualise it. I first experienced it at primary school when my friend was playing with my hair sat behind me in assembly.

I don't like the videos but like some audio ASMR tracks. I hate the nail tapping thing but brushing hair, or playing with the cover on the microphone in different ways can trigger the response.

TaliaTalia · 02/02/2025 21:20

I’m not a fan (my daughter loves it, the nail tapping skincare ones make me shudder).

Having said that, I have a weird fascination with some of those ASMR videos of people eating vast amounts of really slurpy food. I could watch those for hours which I really don’t understand because I can’t tolerate the sound of people eating if they’re in the room with me.

MrsCapGarland · 02/02/2025 21:20

@ Cherrytreat
Contentment bubble is a perfect description.

Cherrytreat · 02/02/2025 21:27

@MrsCapGarland it's interesting that it's not commonplace, I thought most people had it.

Also get it too with the hair brushing, absolutely love that, but it's usually more audio for me than visual/tactile. Even listening to meditation doesn't always relax me, it has to be the right kind of speaking voice, but couldn't tell you what type.

RosaMoline · 02/02/2025 21:29

I love ASMR. It helps me sleep, and calms me when I’m anxious.

This is possibly my absolute favourite:

BathSpider · 02/02/2025 21:31

I find traditional asmr videos gross. But some content creators who incorporate it into camping videos, think whole sheets of ice making glooping sounds, snow melting, fires crackling etc, are amazing and I find their videos so relaxing!

look up lost lakes you tube I fall asleep nightly to their videos.

MrsCapGarland · 02/02/2025 21:33

@Cherrytreat
I agree. My mother in law heard the same radio program and railed, as is her way, about what nonsense is this. It’s a very important part of my life and one I attempt to experience more often than I do.

WarmthAndDepth · 02/02/2025 21:34

@TemporaryPosition,
Eh? You literally wrote:

and I responded that it's easily avoided. What have I not understood?

Dontletthebedbugsbite2 · 02/02/2025 21:35

I love it! I initially had the same response as you of wtf is this, but now I listen to it to fall asleep. I only like particular things though, definitely not sexual for me. It gives me a tingly feeling in my brain - and it drowns out my anxiety which usually keeps me awake at night.

Mirabai · 02/02/2025 21:35

Fake fucking role play beautician? With weird whispery voices? What is wrong with people?

mirrorglitterball · 02/02/2025 21:39

I like some ASMR videos for example cleaning and tidying ones, cleaning messy houses and cars. V satisfying and motivates me to clean!

Hate ones with people talking/making noises especially if it sounds saliva-y and nail tapping etc makes me cringe 😡

CharlotteStreetW1 · 02/02/2025 21:44

Redtrainyellowcarriage · 02/02/2025 20:10

Agree, I don't understand why it's so popular it makes me feel itchy !
I'm also baffled by unboxing videos.

I recently bought a designer handbag. I should have videoed the unboxing - it took about 15 minutes to get into it and remove all the packaging. I bet someone would have watched!

I'm with the OP. ASMR makes my skin crawl.

Wintersgirl · 02/02/2025 21:46

Comedycook · 02/02/2025 20:13

It's repulsive....and why do so many of the people who make these videos feel the need to pull their sleeves so far down over their knuckles...?

Argh! Yes, that really gets on my tits, pull them up fgs!

LaMarschallin · 02/02/2025 21:49

Me too.

Also get it too with the hair brushing, absolutely love that, but it's usually more audio for me than visual/tactile.

Again, me too.

I find the hair brushing ones can really help me get to sleep when my insomnia is playing up.

I guess I can see it's annoying if the tropes like finger fluttering or tapping spill over into non ASMR videos.
I've not noticed that because I don't watch many online videos.
