To find ASMR really disgusting

And find it really off-putting when otherwise interesting and entertaining youtube videos are tagged with this. Makes me not want to watch/listen to them.

What is ASMR? I have googled it but I can't get a straight answer.

It's not a made up term, it stands for Audio Sensory Meridian Response.
A term to describe the tingles and whatever else anyone gets to hearing sounds.

JustJoinedRightNow · 02/02/2025 23:12

Actually sorry the A stands for Autonomous.

Crinkle77 · 02/02/2025 23:13

There's lots of different types of AMSR. I like listening to writing ones but can't stand eating, nail tapping or whispering.

steff13 · 02/02/2025 23:14

I only find it disgusting if it's someone who's like chewing especially if the camera is close up on their mouths. But I get irritated with people tapping their nails on things and stuff like that too. I'm overstimulated pretty easily.

That advert for "Secret Escapes" has just been on TV. Genuinely, I could through the remote control at the screen when the whispering starts, really I could. I don't, because my fingers are in my ears as soon as the advert comes on.

Oakcupboard · 02/02/2025 23:17

It gives me the rage 😡 really intense, totally irrational, anger

MuchuseasaChocolateTeapot · 02/02/2025 23:17

I’m sick of listening to someone farty squeezing shampoo onto a rubber mitt then weird scratchy crunchy noises while they wash their dog. Goes right through me.

Sladequeen · 02/02/2025 23:19

Makes me feel sick, all the mouth and tongue sounds. Also influencers or bloggers who use the weird tiny mic things in their videos when their existing phone picks up the sounds just as well, I can hear all their creepy mouth sounds on them too

WhiteLily1 · 02/02/2025 23:21

TemporaryPosition · 02/02/2025 20:12

🤮 it isn't. But, to each their own.

I love it. For me many asmr videos are incredibly relaxing. I watch them most days (except the eating ones which I don’t like)
DH finds them very annoying. So it’s a bit like marmite.

Garlicworth · 02/02/2025 23:27

I was a happier human before the internet showed me just how weird other humans are!

I already knew there is nothing that isn't someone's fetish, people sometimes feel intensely angry about things that could be resolved with a bit of a chat, special-interest group bonding can get obsessive, and there's always somebody who loves what you find disgusting.

I just didn't want or need so much detail, so often.

Parratha · 02/02/2025 23:40

What is ASMR?

slashlover · 02/02/2025 23:44

There are very specific creators I watch on youtube because there are some things I can't stand. They don't do mouth sounds and do very minimal tapping.

I don't get the tingles but their videos send me to sleep in about 10 minutes, there are 30 minute videos I've never seen the end of because I always fall asleep.

PoorUncleBarry · 02/02/2025 23:55

I'm a fan of the unintentional asmr videos that are so anti sexual that anyone getting turned on by them should consider serious psychological help. One video involves a charlatan waving his hands over people in a healing fashion, Shaul or Saul I think, absolute hokum but a cure for insomnia. There's a lovely lady who restores broken antique dolls, it's mostly visual as there are barely any sounds but certainly no tapping or slurping 🥴

Does this count cooking videos where every sound is enhanced from slicing to chopping to stirring - it drives me insane it is a sensory overload

Edited

It definitely does count.

Whispering or quiet talking drives me nuts as my ears are straining to hear the words - if someone is doing that on the train I have to put my headphones on. Harder to avoid than an ASMR video of it.

AlmondLoaf · 03/02/2025 06:17

Asmr isn't sexual, as someone who actually experiences it I also despise the overly sexualised videos which are clearly aimed at making ££ rather than to people who have ASMR.
I have it from childhood and it would always trigger really randomly, It started when my mum used to plait my hair or clean my ears with a cotton wool bud, then when I was older people with soft spoken voices triggered it (gender made no difference) often when they were moving their hands instructing me to do something.
It is an extremely relaxed feeling with euphoria you feel hypnotised and like you can't move and don't want to move. My feeling starts between my upper shoulder blades and sort of spreads throughout my whole body.. I'd liken it to a massage that hits just the right spot.. Yes you also feel really sleepy and relaxed.
I rarely get full on triggers from videos but the occasional one does get me (weird ones eyebrow threading and some guy making stuff) and I find they calm me down when I am feeling overwhelmed.
If you sexualise ASMR you may as well sexualise therapeutic massages while you are at it.

I find it very concerning the amount of people on here who seem to specialise everything.

Agix · 03/02/2025 07:35

I hate ASMR videos. I find they cause an overwhelming and unpleasant feeling. However I enjoy the ASMR type tingles I get, but seem to get them from regular sounds - such as songs, usually female singing voices.

Same for me since childhood but never knew what it was.
When it happens it’s like someone has poured liquid relaxant down my spine. You just don’t want it to end, it’s such a lovely incredible feeling. But it passes within about 30 seconds to one minute. ASMR videos can bring a small feeling of it but nothing compared to when it happens organically.

It’s very specific. It’s not just ‘feeling relaxed’ It’s a particular feeling that it only triggered by certain things.
If you have never had it then it’s hard to understand / believe

Anyotherdude · 03/02/2025 07:57

What you are describing is not ASMR, but the sometimes cack-handed attempts to induce it on YouTube…
ASMR itself is a natural phenomenon. I have always been able to induce it in myself, just by a small movement that is akin to swallowing, and find it helps me to relax if I’m tense or have neck or back pain. It is definitely not arousing!
You also see it in animals, E.g. when a dog shakes itself, then the tremors travel from the neck to the tail of the dog - so I’m guessing it’s a very ancient primal response in many mammals…

Ameliepoulainandthephotobooth · 03/02/2025 08:18

I love them, they are really hypnotic and relaxing. I like the skincare and housework ones 😂 I’ve never admitted it before in case people think I’m weird.

Sorry autocorrect changed my post it should have said sexualise not specialise. I love ASMR and the 'feeling' it triggers. There's nothing sexual about it and people who think there is are the ones who clearly have issues.

The skincare ones are fab! I love watching someone 'do' my bedtime skincare before I go to sleep.
