To find ASMR really disgusting

And find it really off-putting when otherwise interesting and entertaining youtube videos are tagged with this. Makes me not want to watch/listen to them.

I heard a program on radio 4 several years ago about ASMR and thought at last - I have an explanation for an experience I’ve never been able to describe to anyone who doesn’t have it. Most of the whispering YouTube stuff does nothing for me. I get pleasurable waves spreading up my skull from watching, live or on video, people very gently doing something incredibly detailed or skilful. I wish I could be more clear but it’s very real, trust me.

Completely agree, I first heard the term ASMR a few years ago and was like wait, does everyone not feel those tingles?? It was a bit weird putting a name to something I assumed everyone experienced. Having said that, the specific ASMR videos generally don't do anything except make me chuckle, but each to their own. Like you @MrsCapGarland watching something very detailed and calm by someone who is clearly a master of their craft, or lying very comfortably and feeling very safe with the sun on my skin, or certain people talking in the very calm way about a very simple, safe topic is what triggers mine. It's definitely not a sexual thing.

I wonder if those who get annoyed by ASMR videos in general, or in this case about videos that are not ASMR but are tagged as such, are those who experience ASMR, or not?

I'm happy to send you a video of my cat slurping up her food like an 80 year old with no teeth 😆

D'you know - I'd still take that over a human!

AllProperTeaIsTheft · 02/02/2025 20:39

I just find it baffling and rather annoying.

bellsend · 02/02/2025 20:40

It actually makes me feel ill. Physically sick. God knows why. But I really hate it.

PistachioPickle · 02/02/2025 20:42

The nail tapping 😩😫😩😫

MrsCapGarland · 02/02/2025 20:43

The genuine sensation is a joy. One to be searched for as often as possible.

SleepToad · 02/02/2025 20:46

Redtrainyellowcarriage · 02/02/2025 20:10

Agree, I don't understand why it's so popular it makes me feel itchy !
I'm also baffled by unboxing videos.

So me. Radio 4 did a programme about it (and has had several presenters try to use it) clearly looking at YouTube some men find it sexual. I'm a man and fucking hate it, sets my teeth on edge. It's a bit grim and creepy

Squirrelsnut · 02/02/2025 20:47

I like a lot of it. Some sounds are annoying. I like the quiet talking ones, like Moonlight Cottage, who mixes teas or discusses her antiques very gently and carefully. I haven't seen any sexual ones, unless I'm being naive..

iamnotalemon · 02/02/2025 20:47

I didn't realise AMSR is the feeling/response. I thought it was the sound.

TheTurn0fTheScrew · 02/02/2025 20:49

I do love a bit of ASMR, but the deliberate whispery-tappy-mouth noisy ones are a bit grim. I tend to get it from Radio4 mostly - Poetry Please and In Our Time often work for me. Although nothing is as good as my undergrad East European politics lecturer - I learned nothing in that class as I was in a hypnotic state throughout!

TemporaryPosition · 02/02/2025 20:49

WarmTiger · 02/02/2025 20:31

Well that's because you don't understand what asmr is if you describe it as a weird thrill. Unfortunately some people do not experience the same sensations from ASMR so can't understand that's its simply a relaxation tool. And a very effective one too if you experience it. Please don't attempt to shame people who enjoy it.

I can't help finding it icky that people listen to certain things, not for the content but for the physical sensations it induces.

MrsCapGarland · 02/02/2025 20:50

It is pure emotion. There is no physical input whatsoever.

DonaldJohnTrump · 02/02/2025 20:50

You know, there are some people who knock ASMR? I don't know why. It's just four letters.

FOUR LETTERS arranged rather beautifully. In fact, do you know, it's an angramma amagramp, humpagram, just the word MARS rearranged.

And let me tell you, my friend that my other friend, ELON, is going there! To ASMR! In his own rocket car.

WarmthAndDepth · 02/02/2025 20:50

Meh. It's one of those things that, if you don't like it, you will literally never need to come across it.

Why don’t I know what this is? I watch videos all the time. Am I ASMR immune or something? Am I dead inside?

Seagullsandclouds · 02/02/2025 20:51

I absolutely hate it. Yes it does have a very physical effect on me, but one of intense rage. It makes me want to hit or smash things. This is entirely out of character for me. I am genuinely a very calm person.

And I don’t mean just that I find them annoying and the annoyance makes me angry. It’s a Hulk-like switch.

SassK · 02/02/2025 20:52

I have no idea what this is? Can someone give a brief synopsis?

I think it's some kind of inverse ASMR

OP posts:
housemaus · 02/02/2025 20:54

I only like unintentional ASMR videos, like the kind of stuff you're talking about - the V&A have a whole series on fashion that's ASMR-y that I love, and I'm a big fan of craftspeople in general carving things or making things and talking about it quietly! A lot of them have clocked onto the fact that ASMR is popular and tag their stuff with it now - sorry for those of you who hate it... (I hate anything too whispery or intentional so I understand the ick of it).

slippersandfleece · 02/02/2025 20:57

Yes it's over done and I hate the ways it's spilled into all videos. Fashion types wiggling their 'pieces' before putting them on, beauty bloggers tapping packaging. Just stop.

Titsywoo · 02/02/2025 20:59

I like some of the videos. Not the tapping or whispering or eating but just the simple things like cleaning or people doing massages on others with certain noises.

When I was a kid there were lots of things like teachers writing on the blackboard that made me feel really relaxed and sleepy. There was no name for it then but it was just something that I noticed about myself. There was certainly never anything sexual in it! Just sounds that made my brain feel calm. There was a certain feeling like a tingling in the scalp to that calmness - the ASMR lot on social media use this 'tingling' as something to focus on and I think that makes people think it sounds a bit sexual?

Either way I like it as I watch videos to help me sleep if I am struggling or if I am anxious. It certainly helps a lot of people in that respect.

CurlyhairedAssassin · 02/02/2025 21:01

I'd never heard of it till just now. Watched a couple of youtube videos. I still have no idea what it is. Confused

Odiebay · 02/02/2025 21:02

I watch ASMR. Have done for years. Thing is you either experience tingles/relaxation or you don't. There is nothing sexual or icky about the brains response. It actually helps put me to sleep and is effective on anxiety.

Yes I do agree it can be sexualised and filters into everything these days which is annoying.

mistymorning12 · 02/02/2025 21:02

I've just had to google it and the whispering thing is bloody creepy.

Folks are weird
