To find ASMR really disgusting

And find it really off-putting when otherwise interesting and entertaining youtube videos are tagged with this. Makes me not want to watch/listen to them.

Asmr isn't sexual, as someone who actually experiences it I also despise the overly sexualised videos which are clearly aimed at making ££ rather than to people who have ASMR.

Quite. I like Sophie Michelle's channel. She was a performing arts student and she puts quite a lot of thought into her videos and uses green screens etc. her videos are never sexualised but she ended up with a really full-on stalker who caused her a lot of problems.

The skincare ones are fab! I love watching someone 'do' my bedtime skincare before I go to sleep.

Ooh please point me in the direction of a really good skincare one!

Vroomfondleswaistcoat · 03/02/2025 14:33

I love some ASMR videos, anything with silent massage will send me to sleep! But no whispering, tapping nails or scratching surfaces please!

If you get it, you get it, if you don't, you don't. It's one of those weirdly individual things.

Safe Space ASMR is one of my favourites.

Thank you ♥️

I had never heard of this until I saw this thread. If I have ever seen any videos where this technique is used it has clearly gone right over my head.

ItGhoul · 03/02/2025 15:03

I don't think you really understand what ASMR is.

For a start, ASMR triggers are different for everybody. For some people it's the whispery voice thing, but for plenty of people it's not that at all, so I don't really know why you mentioned saliva noises?! Most ASMR I'm familiar with doesn't involve any talking at all. Sometimes there's no sound, even, it's just a satisfying visual.

My absolute favourite is people writing very neatly with a fountain pen, drawing/painting, or doing something like journalling/scrapbooking. Or typing nicely on an expensive keyboard. No talking or human noises at all.

I can't help finding it icky that people listen to certain things, not for the content but for the physical sensations it induces.

Why does someone else's reason for watching a video affect you, though? Firstly, ASMR isn't a sexual thing. But even if it was, you realise that there will also be people getting sexually turned on by literally anything you've ever watched? There are people with fetishes for really ordinary, mundane things. I guarantee you that anything you've ever watched will be sought ought by someone for the 'physical sensations' it gives them, including things like ordinary cookery shows or TV dramas that have certain settings, adverts for really ordinary products, etc.

The same reason you seem to be affected by my disgust

Sorry autocorrect changed my post it should have said sexualise not specialise. I love ASMR and the 'feeling' it triggers. There's nothing sexual about it and people who think there is are the ones who clearly have issues.

Oh yes, totally agree with you there. Annoys me so much when people sexualise it. It’s not about that!!

It definitely is for some people. They express this in their comments. As PPs have said, there is nothing that someone hasn't got a fetish for. A lot of people men seem unable to experience a pleasant sensation without linking it to sex.

emanresu3 · 03/02/2025 18:01

What is ASMR - I hardly ever watch tiktok etc.

newtoallthisshizzle · 03/02/2025 18:14

Omg I have misophonia and absolutely HATE audible asmr or the like. Chewing, nail tapping, saliva, whispering it creeps me out. Visual however, I could watch mesmerised for hours. I hate that nail tapping and running fingers along the steering wheel or the leather of a luxury car that seemed to be all the rage in any videos about 6 months or so ago. Enraging!

changedusernameforthis1 · 03/02/2025 18:17

Oh I love it - but to each their own.

Mostly whispered reading, it makes me feel relaxed and weirdly safe.
I don't enjoy the eating videos though, but I can't stand people eating loudly in real life either.

One thing I really don't like is when an asmr youtuber makes a video titled something like "sleep video" or "relax time" and then enable ads.
One moment I'm in a forest hearing fairies whisper and speak to woodland creatures, the next I'm shooting out of bed as someone starts yelling in my ear about car insurance 😂

canyouseemyhousefromhere · 03/02/2025 18:19

Hadn’t heard of this until this post.

just watched/listed & it really creeped me out! Awful !

HughGrantsfurrysquirrel · 03/02/2025 18:27

Oh God - yes! Absolutely hate hearing people slurping, crunching, etc..... Sets my bits right on edge!! My idea of torture.

Animals, however🤗, are a totally different matter altogether!
Watching Chunk the groundhog slurping a tomato or crunching a carrot is the most endearing relaxing form of ASMR ever. 🥰

So you find it icky that people might find a hair styling video relaxing after a stressful day?
I find your repulsion to this really weird.

Mirabai · 02/02/2025 21:35

Fake fucking role play beautician? With weird whispery voices? What is wrong with people?

Jeez...calm down....nobody is going to make you watch them if you don't want to 😂

But that’s not what asmr is. It’s a bit like saying physiotherpy is sexual. Some may find it so but that’s not what’s it’s about.

Yeah, you're agreeing with me. Cheers.

DeedsNotDiddums · 03/02/2025 19:00

The good news is that they are tagged, so you don't need to watch them!

qazxc · 03/02/2025 19:08

Asmr has massively helped me with my anxiety and being able to get to sleep. It's probably.hard to understand as it doesn't work for everyone but I feel like tingly relaxing feelings down my spine and around my scalp. It's like it gives my brain a massage. It may be placebo but it has really helped.me and allowed me to lower my meds intake which is a big plus.
I mostly enjoy videos that serve a dual purpose like book recommendations videos for example. I haven't noticed any suggestive or sexual videos, I am probably not being fed them by the algorithm.

DeffoNeedANameChange · 02/02/2025 20:29

Some people have gorgeous whisper voices - I can listen to that no problem. But anything to do with nails or eating - bleurgh.

That said, I can listen to animals eating for hours. Do you think there's much of a market for videos of horses munching hay? Maybe mine could finally start paying their own vet bills......

This! I can watch my horse with hay/apples or my dog eating a carrot munch munch munch… adorable so relaxing, husband sat next to me today with his lunch I had to put the tv on to drown him out 😆

Turkeyneck101 · 03/02/2025 19:51

I absolutely hate long nails tapping on boxes or whatever. I hate long painted nails anyway but the way influencers tap them around and get so affected when describing something/anything when they have these talons just gives the total ick! 😩

Kona84 · 03/02/2025 19:53

I hate it too.
i was watching a bread making thing the other day - wasn’t titles asmr but every element was over the top with noise. I just wanted to learn how to make sour dough
