Father in Law 80+ naughty boy

This is not really an AIBU but felt like a good place to post.

Staying at my in laws at the moment with the kids. Mother in law and DH went out and I’m working from home. Father in law is also at home.

I’m upstairs and he is in study downstairs. Suddenly I hear a woman’s voice - it sounds like she is in distress or sort of semi screaming in pain. Well the first few seconds I thought that’s what I was hearing as thought he must be watching some crime / drama or something… but he was clearly watching porn.

I think he is rather deaf, it was rather loud. He did turn it down a bit but the change of volume was like someone who is screaming is now just shouting.

I don’t judge anyone for watching porn but I actually had a physical reaction to that and feel somewhat sick.

He, I assume, clearly didn’t think I can hear it. Or did he forget I was here?

Get a grip, he’s a fully grown adult and watching porn in his own home. He had the volume up too high because he’s hard of hearing.

If it bothers you that much you either turn up your music loud to drown it out / alert him to the fact that it can be heard or you have a quiet word after the event and say ‘FIL just to warn you that sound travels and you had the volume very loud earlier’.

There was a story on a podcast about a woman watching a racy TV show on a train, thinking the sound was coming through her headphones and someone pointed out that the whole carriage could hear because it was in fact coming out of the phone. She was mortified.

There is NO WAY I wouldn’t tell my DH!! I’d be calling him now. Through horror/hilarity/ bursting levels of uncomfortableness.

OP id just keep this myself, have a little chuckle about it and the ridiculousness of the situation and then forget all about it.

How do you know it wasnt just a sex scene in a film ?? I had to pull my curtains because of a really steamy part in an otherwise thoroughly decent show because it suddenly got really sordid and my tv can be seen from the busy street and i was worried the neighbours would think we were watching porn … it went on for ages …

80+ it did feel relevant (unconscious bias - maybe - I don’t know) - I don’t have issues with people watching porn and they can watch it what ever age but it shocked me it was so loud with me in the house. Do what you want I’m your own home but don’t expose me to it - out of character for FIL - I only can assume he had no idea Inwas here or that I will hear

I think at 80=in his own home he can watch what he wants.
You say you don't judge anyone for using porn but you are shaking and sweating because your FIL does. That's a massive overreaction.
He probably thought he was home alone or it wasn't as loud as it was.
Just forget it. I doubt at 80+ he's recreating anything he's watching.

I find it a bit odd that you're shaking, sweating and nauseous because an adult was watching porn in the privacy of his own study. I think it's pretty obvious he didn't know you could hear it.

It's awkward/embarrassing to hear something like that, but hardly that much of a shocker.

Yep, get over it, older people like sex believe it or not. I imagine he didn’t realise you could hear it, so put your big girl pants on, grow up, and stop behaving like a twelve year old realising your parents have sex!

I think I’d find it pretty stomach churning to listen to anyone, let alone a close relative you could see in a paternal way, watching porn. After all, it’s not going to be on in the background while he does the crossword. But I doubt your DH will say anything to him. If I were you, I’d tell your DH, simply because if I have to suffer, he’d be suffering with me. Then, if they go out again, make a big song and dance to your FiL about how you’re only upstairs, so to shout if you’re making too much noise. And if it happens again, my bags would be packed before DH got back.
