And German politics and just focus on the President he’s already paid for and turning X into a toxic wasteland.

Interestingly the right wing of our country have asked him to not endorse releasing TR.

Which is sensible. They want his money and his endorsement, but do not want their cause intertwined with that of Tommy Robinson.

Unfortunately for the likes of Farage, Musk is playing to his own tune, not theirs, and as they are finding, he is a bit of a loose cannon.

Kind of beside the point but it is so incredibly cringe when people call him by just his first name like they're friends.

I've always assumed the ones supporting him that call him by his first name are his bots/paid supporters to post on these things and the ones against are taking the piss out of those bots, as they are often replying to one of them!

noblegiraffe · 03/01/2025 13:38

Dislike the man if you want I do too but if you see an issue with someone raising awareness about the rape gangs then you are part of the problem.

This is trite nonsense. If someone is 'raising awareness' about the rape gangs because they are peddling racist nonsense, or to gain political power, or to try to paint Britain as a 'cautionary tale' while paying scant attention to the facts, rather than out of genuine desire to support the victims and bring the perpetrators (whatever race they are) to justice, then they are certainly not helpful.

I've got no time for this condescending "woke" (for want of a better word) faux intellectual bullshit.
Thousands of girls were abused raped and some even murdered for decades because people like you didn't want to be seen to be "peddling racist nonsense". About time that mindset died.

Jeez, calm down... you only posted that at 12.27... it might surprise you to learn that most of us don't spend our lives on MN!

But in answer to your question... Starmer was DoPP between 2008 and 2013. Greater Manchester Police later apologised for 'failing to investigate the child sexual exploitation allegations more thoroughly between 2008 and 2010'.

Starmer would have been across this entire investigation and how it was - or indeed wasn't! - being handled. THAT'S the question people want answers to by way of a national inquiry.
But the Labour govt - with Starmer at the helm - don't want one.
Hmm, funny that.

Scary how people don’t know the difference between a police investigation and a decision to prosecute, isn’t it? The facts are here.

https://fullfact.org/online/starmer-muslim-grooming-prosecution-crime/

No evidence Keir Starmer tried to block the prosecution of Muslim grooming gangs - Full Fact

Widely-shared posts on Facebook make an unsubstantiated claim about Mr Starmer’s work for the Crown Prosecution Service.

Annabella92 · 03/01/2025 13:33

How, exactly?

Through the ballot box. Like we did in July. If you really need to ask a question like that you have no business engaging in a political discussion.

itsgettingweird · 03/01/2025 13:47

Oh Blossomtoes don't come on here posting FACTS. Don't you realise people don't want those - they ruin all the fun Wink

I agree that it is utterly shameful and outrageous that the police didn't deal effectively with certain groups of child rapists and groomers because they didn't want to appear racist. At the same time, the idea that actual racists aren't trying to use this to their benefit is naive.

I like Elon Musk. When he's finished shrinking the US 'civil service' I think he should get to work on ours. The more he interferes with UK politics the better

If you love Musk so much emigrate to the US. So much for fucking Brexit sovereignty.

yellowspanner · 03/01/2025 13:57

In many ways he's like Boris. He's known everywhere by his first name and I doubt that he cares what mumsnetters think

Betchyaby · 03/01/2025 13:57

randomchap · 03/01/2025 13:37

It's a pointless fact and does not remove the legitimacy of the current government.

And frankly, it's for everyone to educate themselves, education and knowledge is a good thing. You should try it

I never suggested it did remove the legitimacy of the current government, as that is how our system works... be it outdated.

Receiving 9,660,081 votes in a population of 69,551,332 is not an insignificant or 'pointless' fact, it is quite an interesting one. First past the post does not represent the public.

Do you always try to patronise people in a debate? How juvenile.

yellowspanner · 03/01/2025 13:58

Why should I emigrate to the US just because I like Elon Musk. He's a disrupter and people want the status quo.

I don't generally patronise people.

May I ask, have you always had an issue with the fptp system, or is it just since a party you don't like won power?

How would you like it to work instead?

SafeToUse · 03/01/2025 14:02

I dont give a shiny shite if hes a narcissistic eccentric foreign tycoon, someone needs to shine a light on the mass rape and abuse of female children which has been taking place for decades and has been known about and covered up for just as long.

I suggest that those of you who are unfamiliar with the details of this "grooming" - ie rape - go online and do some research. The details of what was done to those little girls are out there, and they are horrific. So bad I would not post them here.

I'm no Musk fan, but if his interference causes society to recognise what has been happening to little girls, mostly from poorer backgrounds, then surely that can only be a good thing?

If you are talking about the horrific details from court documents that Musk and others tweeted recently, the monsters concerned were prosecuted and jailed in 2013 and are still behind bars, thankfully.

I find that hard to believe, as it is all you have done since our correspondence started. You can disagree with people without resorting to total rudeness!

I have always felt fptp is a terrible system. Proportional representation is much fairer.

BeethovenNinth · 03/01/2025 14:09

I am utterly horrified by the gang rape cover up and wonder why it takes Elon Musk to raise awareness of it? He can stay the fuck in UK politics if this is what he does.

because the Labour Party and KS don’t give a toss about these girls and will do anything to silence it

the only free speech left is on X

TheNoonBell · 03/01/2025 14:18

I'd prefer Labour to stay out of British politics.

Pieceofpurplesky · 03/01/2025 14:20

X has become a place where things people would not say out loud is allowed. The posts about Jess Phillips yesterday were horrendous - calls for her to be raped, murdered and about her appearance (according to X she is too ugly to be a woman). This is a person they are tweeting about, it made me feel a bit sick.

Labour have not banned an enquiry on the grooming gangs, they have said it needs to be the councils that do their own investigations in to what happened. This is the same stance the Tory party had. Problem is nobody on X seems to be able to research and just blindly believe - the one today is a newspaper headline from 2014 that features something done in 1974. The majority of comments are about it being today and are just stoking the right wing even further

Just like the right are labelled racist bigots. Everyone is given a platform on X which is how freedom of speech should work. All other platforms employ censorship including on here.

Once again, you’re deluded if you think everyone has an equal platform on X. You can type what you want but that isn’t freedom of speech. Politics are far more nuanced than merely stating the left or the right in every political debate.

JHound · 03/01/2025 14:20

I think Musk is a special kind of Tyrant. He does not want the constrains of borders or actually being an elected politician but he wants to rebuild the west in a way that he approves of, specifically to reflect his home country and the culture he grew up in.

Which is why he is interfering in politics specifically in support of far right groups and is very fond of sharing and highlighting abhorrent racist tropes online.

I have always felt fptp is a terrible system. Proportional representation is much fairer.

The UK had the chance to vote for a form of pr under the Tory/LibDem coalition. It was widely rejected.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_United_Kingdom_Alternative_Vote_referendum

The biggest drawback of a full pr system is that you often get small, fringe, parties getting the deciding votes in parliament. Therefore over amplifying the wishes of a small minority.

Fptp has the drawback of giving parties more seats in proportion to the number of votes earned. However it does usually stop hung parliaments.

Whichever form of democracy you prefer it is most definitely antidemocratic for foreign billionaires to try to subvert it

He also does not agree with free speech as is seen with what he does to people on X who disagree with him.
